I managed to dump a mug of coffee on my laptop keyboard Monday morning, and had to start trying to scramble to find an emergency laptop repair place here in Edinburgh. Darius at Hex was the first person I spoke to that gave me any confidence that the laptop could be repaired. I took the laptop to him on Monday afternoon, and he was compassionate, transparent, and very professional in th communicating to me what the timeline and options would be. Hex fixed the computer well enough for me to use an external keyboard the next day and expedited ordering of a replacement laptop keyboard so that I had it back working this afternoon. This shop is very good both for buying computers and related accessories, and getting any repairs done - they even repair mobile phones which is handy if you have a phone that is damaged, but you don't want to replace. The prices here are generally pretty competitive and you will be likely to struggle to find somewhere else that can match both its range of products and prices - I certainly haven't come across such a place. In addition you get very good customer service and the staff know what they are talking about. It's well worth a visit especially if you have any repairs that need doing. I actually think these gents should set up some sort of underground stand up comedy club in the back - they'd make a killing. This has to be the most fun i've had buying an iPhone cord in my life. Having recently landed from CAD, and not having the forethought to buy the proper adapters, by day three, I was in full blown panic mode. Like a time bomb, i've been watching that battery percentage slowing dwindle down over the days. When it finally kicked the bucket, leaving me without access to maps, a camera and most importantly, Yelp input - I sought the closest solution with even half way ratings. This place was decently priced, quick and even slapped on an extra glass cover on the phone for a lean $9. But what makes them truly worthy of the five stars? The gents here are hilarious. They are over the top, genuinely funny human beings and an absolute hoot to chat with. Which is a smart business model if you think about it - I was so entertained that I happily nabbed the glass cover when suggested and would have taken a case or two, had the one I wanted not been cream (I spill coffee. Often.). They were so pleasant, that it made spending money a no brainer and I left in a better mood, with fairly priced items that didn't make me feel ripped off after the giggling subsided. After hearing so many good things about this place I decided to pass by and get some advice on my "broken" phone and to buy an adapter, which was about £8. They boys behind the counter were very efficient and helpful. It did not take them long to switch my SIM cards and get my old phone working. I also got some advise on which service provider is best to use. There are lots of accessories in that shop. Sadly, I was so busy getting my own phone working that I did not look around much. However, I will definitely be back should I need help with my phone again. I also wished them good luck for their nomination on Best Scottish Retailer Award......Hope they win! read more

Should have read reviews before dropping in. Samsung phone not working. Tech did a couple of checks in front of me then took phone through the back for other quick checks. Told me the phone probably had problems with the memory and likely not possible to repair easily. Could do further diagnostics for £19.99. I agreed that it was an old phone and i should probably replace it. No charge for quick check. Got home after buying new phone elsewhere and opened old phone to change sim and discovered memory card missing. Phoned shop immediately but they said they did not have it. Sign on counter said "Remove sim and memory cards before leaving phone for repair". Concerned. read more

I have used Hex several times, and always had a great experience with them. I've dropped my Nexus phones in water twice, and also had a malfunctioning charger fry one. The guys in the shop are always super nice and helpful, and they get back to me very quickly. Although my phone was too damaged to be saved after it was fried, they didn't even charge me the diagnostic fee because they said they could see the damage was irreparable as soon as they opened it up. The times that it was able to be saved, they did a wonderful job. I've always had a great experience with this shop and would recommend them to anybody! read more

Awesome place has so much phone stuff and computer stuff you would drool ( if your nerdy like that which I am ) . Place will fix your phone quickly just as they did with mine, and do it for a good price. I hunted around and they seem to be the cheapest ones with the best service. Unbelievably poor and terrible service. Unhelpful and considerably rude! Charged £30 for a new battery 2 months ago, it broke again and they said it wasnt covered under warrenty?? I took it to another shop who didn't charge for a diagnosis, and when they did realise it was the battery, they replaced it for £15! (Half the price) - AND gave me a written 3 month warrenty! (Ispecialist - absolutely excellent service). I wouldn't recommend Hex to anyone - really bad. read more

Good for iPhone repairs! The top button on my iPhone broke, meaning that I couldn't power it off or lock it (except using a fairly clunky software workaround). I looked online and the repair is certainly quite complex, involves taking apart nearly every component of the phone and is very fiddly. I therefore opted to call in with the pros, choosing Hex based on a colleagues experience with them. I dropped my phone off with Hex when they opened, was told the price for the work and went to pick it up two hours later as agreed. It was ready and it worked. What more could I ask for? Unlike some of the other mobile repair places I've laid eyes on, these guys seemed to have a significant case load and have a reputation to look after. I would happily recommend them for Apple iDevice repairs. read more

First I called, and talked to a man that was SO RUDE and UNHELPFUL, I decided to come into the store to get help in person. Sure enough I had to deal with the same 'Mac Engineer' I talked to on the phone: longish dark hair, blue eyes and glasses. He was even more NASTY to me in person, and eventually MADE ME STRAIGHT UP CRY. Basically, every question I asked he would answer with the same sarcastic response with a massive attitude, showing he wasn't listening to anything I was actually saying because I am was absolutely not asking the same question over and over. I left when I finally got the information I came in to get, simply if the service I wanted them to do with my external hard drive was possible, but this took a good 15 minutes of VERBAL ABUSE. The way he talked down to me is something I hope never to experience for the rest of my life, from not only a stranger but someone I know. If this is the kind of employee you let deal with your customers, I wouldn't be surprised if your business goes downhill because I am certainly not ever coming back, even if that means figuring out how to deal with a computer problem I don't know anything about on my own, like what I am struggling to do at this very instant. Worst customer service I have received in a while.... There was water damage to my phone, and the screen wasn't working, so had dropped the phone off a few months ago for repair. I was told that it would be £15 for them to look at the phone, then they would let me know the cost of repairs before proceeding. I was then told (after a week or so) that the screen needed replaced- which would be £140. I told them to wait, and explained I wouldn't know for a couple of months whether I could afford this. I was told this was fine. Went to pick it up today- this is like 3-4 months after handing it in... and told that the screen did not need replaced, and that they had replaced some port which had fixed it- but they had already done the work, and so I was to pay £40, or I was to wait more time for them to un-do the repair that had already been done. So basically- I had been without my phone for 3-4 months- even though it had been fixed, I just hadn't been told. And secondly, it had been repaired without me confirming I wanted to go ahead. Now Im doubting that there was any repair done on it- as I know that sometimes water damaged phones will just start to work again. Extremely annoyed read more

I sadly didn't have a good experience from this shop. I took a Blackberry in to buy a new sim and unblock it. Brand new Blackberry it had been used for around 3 days and I had decided to change over to Vodafone. Left it with them 2 hours. When I went back to collect I was given it back switched off. I switched on in the shop and there was a thin red line down the left side of the screen. I asked what this was and they said it was there when I brought it in. It was definately not there before. I didn't know what to say really. I said again it wasn't there before and he said it was. What else could I say? I paid and left the shop and feel either he did something to cause this or swapped phones? Who knows, it hadn't affected the use much until now, a few months later and suddenly I cannot open texts as the line sits over the texts in box. I certainly wouldn't use this shop again as I don't trust what happened and no effort to offer assistance. Although I know it wasn't there before, if, just say it was the case it was there before.... surely you would had expected to have been offered advice about it as it was a potential for him to make more moeny fixing the problem?). This made me more suspicious later on reflection as he offered no advice or help. I would like to know if anyone else had similar experiences? read more

I can recommend Hex CS very highly. I work in Technology Consulting and in my informed opinion Mark and his team are of a high calibre, both in terms of their technical ability and their approach to customer service. In August 2013 I brought three laptops (2 mine, 1 my partner's) to Mark, for various items of work. When I brought the machines to Hex, Mark was professional, attentive, engaged, and worked through the issues with me, discussing each one and developing an aggregated cost model to encompass all three machines. After I left the laptops with Mark, he inspected them and emailed me back promptly with a clear breakdown of his proposed schedule of work. Most of the machines required only basic mechanical work and this was completed to a high standard. However, one laptop had an intermittent fault which was tricky to identify, and this is where Mark's intelligent and professional approach came into its own. He gathered all of the information around the fault, proposed a repair to me, ensured I understood the technicalities, and thoroughly tested it. Mark and I had to work through two iterations of this, before the fault was identified, and he went the extra mile in terms of determination to find the fault and thoroughly test the machine to check it would not re-occur. I came here to get my iphone 5 screen replaced. After a few light knocks, i was very surprised to see that the screen was cracked in two places and then the LCD was not functioning at all. I went to get it replaced at another place and was told that the screen I had on was a chinese knock off and not an apple certified one. Very dissappointed that I wasted my money here. read more

I would say they are fine for old phones, but don't even think about going there with a new smartphone for them to repair. I took an iPhone 6 there with a cracked screen, they are misleading about price compared to Apple but very careful about the exact words they use. Basically Apple are cheaper even if you have to pay and not under warranty. Also Hex not really capable of doing it and can damage other things (did with me). I think they are well meaning enough (accepting they are a business and want to maximise profit) and OK for older cheaper phones. read more

not good customer service. told me ill get my phone back in three days, and they ll phone me as soon as its done. no phone call for another 7 days, than after waiting i gave them a call myself. again i was told ill get my phone back in 2/3 days. nope nope... lies again..finally i went to the shop this morning to find out what was wrong than i was told a fake story about a faulty part which they ordered and blah blah blah.so to get my own phone back, because i didnt want it fixed, i was made to wait 45 mins. will never even walk pass this shop.
