Everyone loves a bit of Cex (sorry, I had to go there before someone else did). Seriously though, if you've not got into this shop you most definitely should. Cex is where the appeal of a second hand music store meets a games exchange. When I first had a look around I thought it was merely the latter, as you are faced with the games section as you enter the store. I was impressed enough with that - there were a fair few, fairly recent DS games for a fiver, and some recent XBox games for under 20 quid. But when I turned a corner I was faced with even more mind blowing bargains. I spotted a Red Dwarf "just the Shows" boxset for a shockingly good 8 quid, and some recent stand up comedy DVDs for just under 2 quid. They had enough DVD's to rival Fopp, and an eclectic mix of music that is obviously a mish mash of everyone's exchanges. Overall, I loved it. I have a few movies and CD's on my to do list that I'll pick up next week. Including a Dogtanian cartoon for 75p. He was my childhood hero and arguably worth so much more to me than that, but who am I to argue with a bargain like that? It's a steal!

Cex (titter at the name now so we can move on) is a sort of Computer, games and DVD specific type of Cash Converter sort of place, and none of that particularly appeals to me. This store is quite big, and specialises in buying and selling computer consoles, games, dvds and all that kind of stuff. It all seems a little dodgy to me although I'm sure it isn't, but I personally wouldn't go in and buy someones second hand Playstation when I knew they had probably previously sold it for half the price I'm buying it for. A good point is that they deliver stuff to you free of charge, great if you are buying something a bit bulkier and don't want to lug it around Edinburgh with you. Not my cup of tea, but good if you want cheap games or dvd's, and don't mind them being second hand.

Here lies the value of staff that enthuse about their job. The staff here are as unashamedly geeky as the interior suggests and for that I thank them. Informative, always willing to suggest helpful tips on what to buy and eager to aid you on your way to the best deal: The staff at CEX are top quality. Saying that, CEX needs such quality staff in order to persuade you to buy much of the second hand gaming gear on offer. You'll find stripped down computer parts, shelves of traded games, and random components for games consoles throughout. For the average consumer this will all seem a little alien and untrustworthy when it comes to submitting your cash. Nonetheless, with the staff's help and keen eye you can pick up some computing bargains and rest assure that its in full working condition. The option to sell/trade your old gaming gear is a bonus too.

    Review Highlights - CeX

A cross between Cash Converters, Gamestation and Fopp, Cex is every bit as fascinating as it sounds, and is the exact type of store I find utterly impossible to walk past.

Is this the 90s, or is that just a NES I see in the window?…read more It is in fact still 2010, but Gamesmasters have managed to acquire a NES in pristine condition. Haven't seen one of those since I was five, and since retro gaming has come back in a major way, some priveleged person will make good use of this machine. Gamesmasters really was like going back to gaming stores of the 90s. It has some of the most obscure offerings from PS1, SNES, Sega Saturn and the N64 to name but a few, all for around a fiver. It had the biggest collection of old rarities I've seen since they were the cutting edge technology. Some of the SNES games were still in their boxes, not looking 20+ years old in the least. I used to be a big gamer back in the days where I was a quiet, reserved young lady, but I've got to admit I haven't moved with the times. Places like this really excite me because I get nostalgic and they appeal to the platform, 2D level of gaming I'm still stuck at. But for people who have moved on to those new fangled Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed type dealios, they also have a lot of reaosnably priced second hand copies for the PS3, XBox and Wii. Absolutely rammed with games from the past 3 dacadees, this place is immensely resourceful, cheap and packed full of rare finds. I will be going back for Castlevania 2 and might get my beau to train me on the joys of those PS3 crazy games. Amazing!

It's good to see a thriving, bustling working class area still keep it's identity and avoid becoming either a gentrified shadow of it's former self or a boarded-up ghost town. And it's only on streets like this that Games Master could exist. Compared to the shockingly low trade-in prices you'll get offered at the big stores, you can come out of here with some of the best geekery related bargains in town if you're lucky. Still no import games though, which is a shiter.

Some of them are neatly arranged but the majority of stuff feels haphazardly stacked or piled on top of older, dustier stuff. As the title implies, there's also crates and crates of well played 45s, 33s, tapes and DVDs. Prices are rock bottom and whilst lots of it could be categorised as bad or forgotten pop, rock, blues or classical, there are some classics from Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, The Who and The Beatles if you're prepared to dig hard enough.

But my oh my, if you decide to be the one to sort through it all to actually find what you like, good luck to you. I've never properly stepped inside. I tried, but the felt like the whole place was just too precariously arranged. Like the whole thing might come toppling down at a wrong turn. And I'm notorious for really (really) not being aware of my own surface area. Or anything around me, for that matter. I did have a great deal of fun leafing through their record collection, though. They're all pretty cheap records, but I didn't recognise a single name, and didn't feel like taking the risk buying something rubbish. All I have to say now is: venture in at your own risk.
