The cafe is very popular but not noisy. I am disabled and this shop is a godsend as I cant walk around big shops and supermarkets but I can get most things here.

I loved that everything was put in paper bags, not plastic. I read that the market has been around since the 9th century, which I loved knowing. I didn't think it was much at the time when I lived in South Croydon, but now I really do miss places like this. I miss wandering "down to town" and passing this market and then wandering pass it again on the way home. It was a great place, full of vibrant people, a decent selection of stalls including ones that sold fresh fruit and veg, bags, purses, books, watches, pendants, antiques, flowers, specialty foods and the list goes on. In general, the number of stalls increased during the weekends. As with most outdoor markets, there's potential for haggling if you're into that kind of thing. There's also a lot of trash, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder... keep your eyes peeled for bargains in the summer, such as freshly plucked berries at an amazing price! Towards closing time (around 5:00 pm), there were lots of bargains that could be had: 1 pound for this or 1 pound for that. That is if you can understand the locals, screaming in cockney rhyming slang. There is nearby street parking, but the best bet would be to park near the city centre and walk down. I was lucky enough to live within walking distance of this market.

The regular hop shop sells produce from castle farm and the surrounding farms. But during lavender season, they put up a second shop to cope with the sheer loads of visitors and all the lavender products on offer. They distill their own lavender oil on the farm and sell it as an essential oil and also as a cold or hot flavouring. Lavender products ranging from scented bags for your cupboards to some amazing lavender shortbread cookies are available for purchase. They also have massage sessions set in the middle of the lavender fields which get booked up very quickly. I'd love to return to pick our own pumpkins or apples later this year and if I'm in town for Christmas, I know where I'm picking up our protein from.

There are also different places to get a cup of hot mulled wine or hot chocolate and you'll find the long lines for Ben's cookies nearby! If you are coming to Covent Garden via the tube, know that this tube station is a wreck! It's incredibly busy and unless you want to walk up an endless flight of stairs, you'll need to wait and pack in like sardines into the elevator.

Well, it turns out it was worth it. This place is dedicated to local Farmers who are growing and raising the produce themselves. After reading 'The Omnivore's Dilemma' by Michael Pollan earlier this year (I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how the food gets on your table) I have developed a keen interest in buying my food in this way, and it appears so have a lot of other people as these kind of farmer's markets are increasing substantially in popularity. This market is held weekly in the grounds of a local school and has a very good choice of organic vegetables & fish as well as free range meat (chicken, beef, lamb, pork, sausages, bacon). You can also find buffalo mozzarella, fruit juices, cold cuts and yoghurt. The stall holders are very keen to explain how it may have been grown, reared and caught and although it's a little more expensive than your local supermarket the pay-off is taste, quality and ultimately your health.
