While we have some truly spectacular butcher shops here in the Bay Area, I must say that the charm and authenticity of Hussey's is on a completely different plane. I mean, you do have to actually board a plane if you want to go there, but it's really a destination level butcher. Their sister store, just down the lane a bit, Hussey's Grocery doesn't have a review written yet - but I'll get to it. I was enthralled from the very first - there's a truly Locals Only Pub that serves Sunday Roast with all the Fixin's - one of Wayne's brothers works the bar there and rotates in to Husseys as well. There's a third brother - I don't believe I had the pleasure of making his acquaintance; most of my interaction was with Wayne. First day in - he humored me: let me take video on an actual camera of him breaking down a beautiful cut of meat for my requested Steak Tartare. His knife techniques are surgically precise and beautiful to behold! I also picked up three house made sausages: pheasant and plum, I believe - or perhaps it was pork and plum. Delicious - perfection. They practice whole animal butchery, and will graciously pause to fill a last-minute order/request or head back to the walk-ins from a primal cut. The butcher block is stunning - Wayne says they never stay 'round much because they're sanded down daily as part of their food safety practice of course, and people just queue up to purchase them. When you do pop by Hussey's, you will note that their eggs are pastured and they do not refrigerate them. You can also carry parcels from the Grocery to the Butcher shop and vice versa on the honor system, and they'll ring you up at either spot. I miss it so much!

The small shop is hidden inside the Finnish church in London, a well kept secret among the Finnish people. But the shop, as well the church, welcomes anyone and is open like any other shop. The church offers it's sauna for rent for either private or groups, in hourly based, great place to go warm up during the cold and rainy winters. There's a sauna, cafe/cafeteria, shop, library, hostel and children's play area. There is a lot of activity - especially on weekdays - for mothers and kids, and weekend activities for families and adults alike. There are two main 4-day events held every year: the Christmas Fair (November) and the Easter Fair (March/April). These attract thousands of visitors, but few know that outside of these times, there's a lot going on - and it's often very delicious! There's a Finnish meal for £6 (£4 veg or £3 soup) on Saturdays, and often on weekdays (contingent on other activities). Then there's always a basic cafe which serves sweet and savoury pastries and filter coffee and tea. Prices are very reasonable for London standards and the atmosphere is relaxing and homely. The church is a welcoming place for people, regardless of their background, and many come out of curiosity to try Finnish foods or to meet Finnish friends.

It is very small but super convenient - it stocks what we usually need (and being a partly Asian flatshare we do need our Asian products). They have a fairly good range of frozen dumplings give their size: siu mai, mushroom dumplings, prawn dumplings, buns... We also buy our rice here (handy because we buy 5 to 10 kg each time and don't want to carry it around across town). They've got most of the sauces we use (hoisin, oyster and chili mainly). They also have a good range of soups and noodles. You can even find a few fresh products at the entrance and they're usually good! The prices are ok, and the owner is very friendly and will recommend suitable alternatives if the exact product you want is not available (or tell you when he will next stock it if he doesn't have anything similar). They also have some Japanese products like nori or the little panda biscuits (you know, the ones that are way too cute to be eaten?). Probably not worth the trip but if you're in the area definitely check it out.

Your wonderful employee who made me feel like a complete winner for picking the new sea coconut and bamboo beverage in the refrigerator case. Hands down the most pleasant interaction I've had in Whitechapel in weeks.

Sure it's filled with bits and bobs of tat but there's also flower, fish, meat, clothing, street food and oh so many wonderful stalls to explore. I even stopped to try some authentic Italian cuisine at a little stall called LovingEAT - Andrea was ridiculously friendly and talked us through his menu. The Arancino was delicious and very authentic - I'll be back! We also bought a beautiful orchid from a flower stall for just £3.50! I will be back next weekend to explore again and I have a feeling this will become a regular Saturday adventure! Definitely recommend for truly authentic London market experience.

The fact that I will (semi) willingly trek across from Highbury to shop here says it all. The hoard of mushrooms of all varieties that greets customers at the front of the shop makes me immediately think about wild mushroom risottos and tarts (irrespective of the reason I am here). They are displayed with justifiable pride - this is the only place where I know ceps and morels (and all their mushroom friends) are guaranteed to be available to buy when in season. It is not just about the mushrooms though - all the other vegetable and fruit goodies you would expect from a greengrocer are here as well as a few things that one wouldn't (I spied some preserved lemons here yesterday). This works for me. Because now I can find my fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables for the week along with select pantry items amongst other locals who are perusing the goods because they actually want to buy them and cook them rather than gawk at them with their enormous DSLRs (and just generally get in my way). Booths is always buzzing with activity on Saturday mornings, and you will undoubtedly see one or two restaurant vans outside picking up their produce, a testament to Booth's quality and to the fact that the model of picking up and moving to a truly local market works. Who needs Borough when there's Maltby Street?
