Well, where to start . . …read more I found this place by accident when I was doing my articles to qualify professionally in Salisbury, by sheer good luck I took rooms just a few yards away from a pub I had unknowingly driven past a hundred times - it is - it really is - well hidden. Once I found it I practically moved in . . .. This pub is located in the tiny hamlet of Netherhampton - just outside Salisbury in Wiltshire. If you are in the area - eat here! It is a chocolate-box cover thatched pub - all oak beams, real fires and horse brasses. The beers - ever changing - are kept in such fine condition that they have won awards (plural) from CAMRA. Their lagers are - well - lagers (enough said) if you're in this pub drinking lager you've missed the point utterly. However - their ciders (and I'm thinking Black Rat in particular) are first class. If you want a drinking pub you can't go wrong here However . . . their food . . . is . . . sublime. Now don't get me wrong they serve pub food. You won't find some sort of Cordon Bleu stupid pretentious nouvelle cuisine here. But you will find things like sausage and mash with sausages made from local wiltshire pork with REAL mash made from real spuds. The ham and eggs are made with ham from the local farm simmered in Black rat cider for four hours then roasted slowly and served with eggs from the hens next door. Their Jambalaya Gumbo and Cassoulet are beautiful creations scratch made by their chef (and she really is from New Orleans!!). But - and I challenge you: try their chilli. Normally Chilli is a dish that is best avoided at all times - its usually made with left over roast beef from the Sunday roast or it's just minced beef with tomatoes and hot stuff. This is different - this is real chilli, real steak - in chunks, whole tomatoes braised to a vermilion syrupy sauce ignited with fresh scotch bonnet chillis. The other chef, Taylor (the boss's son), has made this his signature dish. Now listen up: I hate chilli - it's usually secondhand, second-class, reheated muck that I wouldn't serve to my dog. I NEVER order it when eating out - with one exception - the V&A. I regularly travel from my home in London down to Netherhampton just for lunch, and if I'm to be honest, I order one of their fabulous pub meals and get them to pack me a serving or three of their chili to take back home. Great beer, great food and great hosts. I know of no finer pub in England (that hasn't stopped me looking you understand . . .) One more thing, dogs - even three-legged ones - are welcomed. They also support local community events and activities. Toilets are clean and parking is available. I had the best steak and kidney pudding and all the trimmings while my daughter enjoyed the vegetarian menu, vegan options are also available. The Royal Oak is the essence of what a rural pub needs to be to survive these days. Only a mile or so off the A36 but in a beautiful old village. I heartily recommend, but do book early as this is a place sure to be popular with cyclists, tourists, locals and passing trade.

Ox Row Inn is located conveniently in the main central square area, so we also got to see cute bits of the town on our walk there. It was cozy and inviting inside, very "ye olde pub" feeling. The upstairs dining rooms were enchanting looking. We each got a drink and found a table without a reserved sign on it (they had pub trivia starting about an hour and a half after our arrival, but almost all tables were empty but reserved...I am still wrapping my head around the reservation thing at pubs!) and settled in to enjoy our drinks. A cider for my Fella, and a spritzy cocktail for me. Both lovely. We considered staying for trivia, but were just too tired. I started finding myself annoyed at most pubs and restaurants we went to where the mens toilets were on the ground floor, but the womens were up or down a flight of stairs or more. And the womens toilets here are upstairs and well away from the main area. It was so empty upstairs, I almost thought I was in the wrong place, too. We kept getting strange looks from another patron which made us speed up finishing our drinks and leaving. Despite being Americans, we were not being loud or doing anything other than chatting having a drink, but it was really strange and made us a bit uncomfortable. It's also just a 7-8 minute walk from/to the train station (en route to/from the cathedral). It almost looks like a pub in the countryside, thanks to the the extensive lawn/garden in front of the building, which includes a nice outside seating area. The pub inside is both large and attractively designed. The people who created this made extensive use of the original building. The menu resembles that of a JD Wetherspoon pub, minus the club deals. The food is a little pricier (and I do mean: a little) - but, in my case (mixed grill), also a bit tastier than the one you'll get at your average Spoon. There is a large bar, also reminiscent of JDW, at the heart of the building with its two floors. As usual, the whole range of alcoholica were available, though some beers were sold out. The staff were friendly, if not always competent (the question whether the mixed grill, like the steaks, was also entitled to the UKP1 for a pint of beer upgrade, caused a bit of a kerfuffle. It was decided that only steak dishes can be coupled with UKP1 beers, but since those included only Carling and Fosters, I wasn't too unhappy ("I cannot be caught drinking a Fosters" was my precise comment). The food arrived after about 15 minutes, everything was well prepared, the steak, chicken breast and gammon of good quality. Because of the earlier discussion they offered me an extra egg e.g. for my grill, but it was filling without it already. Too bad they forgot the sausage with the mixed grill though. English rugby is a real favourite. Adrian, the landlord, has worked here for many years and has recently taken over the lease from Joe Morris who ran it for nearly thirty years. He has a gentle hand on the tiller, and has only added to the quality of the experience with his enthusiasm. Catch the train to Salisbury, explore the city, and sample a few pints or five here before heading back to the station.
