Down three steep steps off a small square (watch your head), the small Gouden Mandeke is a lovely bar. Backing onto the canal, and below street level, this bar is dark and atmospheric: great on a savagely rainy day or for escaping the occasional Ghent sunshine. In winter there is a powerful stove, normally hogged by the bar's resident dog; if you hear a small yelp, it's probably a dream of chasing rabbits.
The bar has a reasonable selection of beers, including Mystic Kriek on tap, plus a cranberry version in the winter. The Witkap also comes recommended. The bar staff are friendly and efficient, and this bar is less on the beer tourist trail, so the crowds are local.
Highly recommended for its atmosphere and friendliness. read more
