I am so upset with hertz, based in Birmingham Alabama at the airport. My family has just experienced a situation where this company chose actual greed over a loyal customer. My husband reserved a vehicle almost a month ago for my 40th birthday trip. When he arrived to pick up our rental (ON TIME MIND YOU), he was told they opted NOT to hold our reservation due to a concert and race in the city, and had instead rented out all the vehicles that would fit our family. We ended up leaving 3 hours late and were LIED to about our options after that. We were told we could swap the vehicle out at our next stop in Tallahassee, but surprise, the Hertz at the next location also did not have the vehicle we needed. We are left driving a car with not enough space for the family members we have with us and driving a vehicle we cannot see out the back window because luggage is wedged in anywhere it could go. I absolutely will never trust this company again and will be asking my husband to abandon his President Circle status and move to another rental company. Not sure what happened and I understand this is a smaller airport location, but upon arrival at the customer service kiosk in the garage, I'm told that unless I'm a Gold member or pre-paid for my rental, I could not be serviced. Now where was that sign....nowhere to be found. In fact, there were quite a few guests in front of me and behind me that were also left in the dust by Hertz/Dollar BHM Airport location. I also understand from the frontline employee perspective, they too must have had a not so positive experience, but as the frontline, they should provide options and better explanation for what was happening. Unjust Charges and Poor Customer Service - Never Renting from Hertz Again I normally don't leave reviews, but the level of dishonesty and poor service I experienced with Hertz warrants a warning to others. After my car was totaled, I rented a vehicle from Hertz. I initially booked it for one week, but due to ongoing circumstances, I needed to extend the rental. When I spoke to an agent at the pickup location, I specifically asked whether I would still be charged for the full extension if I returned the car early. I was clearly told no--that I would only be charged for the days the vehicle was actually used. Based on that assurance, I returned the car two days early. Yet, I was still charged for the full extended rental period. I contacted customer service and was told they would adjust the charges and send a new receipt. Two days passed with no update. I followed up, only to be informed that the case had been closed and the full charges were deemed valid. I disputed this again and was told a new case would be created and a supervisor would contact me. No one ever reached out. I then used the app to speak with a live agent, provided the case number, and explained everything again. The response? The agent stated the case was closed--and abruptly ended the chat. On top of being charged for days I didn't use the car, I was also charged $80 simply for returning the vehicle to a different location--because the original drop-off location was closed. I had no choice but to return it elsewhere. This experience has been frustrating, dishonest, and completely unprofessional. It's infuriating to know that after I returned the car early, Hertz likely re-rented it, meaning they profited twice off the same vehicle. I will never rent from Hertz again, and I strongly advise others to beware of hidden fees, misleading information, and poor customer service. read more

Was really frustrated with Hertz. I arrived for my pickup at the scheduled time and there was a line of at least 10 people in front of me waiting for cars and they took very long to get the cars out. Their policy was also ridiculous for the security payment, they only allowed the credit card of the person on the name of the booking to pay the deposit fee, even though I paid for the booking with my card online, they would only let the card with his name on it pay the deposit which wasn't working. We asked to pay with his debit card instead then and they charged us $500 for the security fee instead of the $200 just for using a debit card and not credit. It was ridiculous and then having to wait an hour after that just to get the car was awful. The car itself was good and the return process was very easy but just overall not very pleased with the company. Will not use them again. read more

The car I rented was a lemon with engine problems. The staff could care less and will just send you to someone else or a 1800 number that means nothing. Short review... Weekly traveler for the last 15+ years. Also a Hertz President Club member. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS LOCATION. Full review... Flight landed on time on a Tuesday, Hertz / airport relatively empty. Everything seems to be smooth until I go pick my car. I was informed they didn't have ANY midsize cars... I had booked a two day rental for ~$70/day or $140 total. They said all they had was minivans (could care less what I drive for 2 days). They tried to re-book my reservation and add on every potential option (gas, premium insurance, etc.) and in addition tack on an "upgrade fee" for a minivan that I didn't want. Total quote for 2 days was $950, or $810 more than the $140 rate I originally booked (all-In). In summary, after 20 mins of discussion, and telling them that would not work, they offered me a basic economy full size car for $70 more, or 50% than what I had originally booked. After traveling all day (9+ hours) I settled on it, but it was an absolute joke / coercive robbery. Very poorly managed Hertz and based in my experience it appears this is an isolated incident at this location, not Hertz as a corporation / rental Company. It appears to me they are trained to upsell and charge upgrade fees if the car you booked is not available (which is likely). Hope this helps anyone looking to rent from this specific location or hopefully at least someone from corporate reads this review and makes changes because it seems to be a common theme at this location. read more

I rarely do reviews but the customer service I received from Varisia (Miss V) was exceptional and I have to make mention. My brother and I had a reservation to pick up a car at the Alabama Shuttles worth airport Avis and I called the location 3 x's to make sure we had all the information we needed to know to complete the rental. I do not have a drivers' license and he does not have a credit card. We thought we were set. When we went to the Avis counter we were refused a car. The agent ran a credit check on my brothers' debit card which had $12,000 on it and we were told it failed. If any of the agents that I spoke to during any of the 3 previous calls had mentioned this we would have made other arrangements knowing that this might happen. Now we were stranded with no car in a city where we didn't know anyone. We called customer service, they didn't care. All other car rental companies were sold out. The Magic City Classic as well as another big event was taking place. I couldn't believe Avis just left us like they did. Lucky for us we explained our plight to Miss V at Hertz and she found us a car. They also ran a credit check and it was successful!!!! The rental cost $150.00 more than my Avis reservation because we had to take a premium car, but I was just glad to get a car. Thank you Miss V at Hertz. Never again Avis, GOOD BYE!!!! Also when we checked in there was a billing discrepancy. The website & customer service number provided rate information that the agent at the counter didn't appear to agree with. Miss V just happened to be passing by to address another issue at the time and she took care of the adjustment. We made a reservation ahead of time to pick up our car on Thursday afternoon. We got off the plane and went right to the rental. There were about 3 people in front of us. No big deal... we thought... after waiting 45 mins on line for 3 people, my husband finally gets up to the line and they advised him he was all set and that he just needed to wait for the keys. Literally, another 30 minutes to by abs finally they call my husbands name. Tell him that he needs to be checked in. We approached the desk and asked "isn't that exactly what we did 30 minutes ago?" The Indian lady said "well we need to do this when you are given the keys" I tried to get an explanation as to why he had to check in yet again after waiting another 30 mins on top of the probably 45 mins. She was being rude and kept saying that she was "giving us the keys once ahead was notified and to take the keys and go." She was extremely rude to us and mocked me. We were not the only ones who had issues. We originally tried to check in using the app as that was promoted on the screen, but the app wouldn't recognize my husbands face and we spoke to others in line who all said they had the same issue. If we didn't have a reservation, I would have understood the response time, but we booked ahead. We should not have had to wait this long to get our car after traveling all day. The worst rental car counter by far in nearly 25 years of business travel. Arrived to the counter with a same day reservation after my flight was diverted. Was actually traveling with kids this time and was told that they didn't have any cars and that it would be at least 2 hours. Offered to leave and have dinner. While I was walking away employee screamed across the parking area that 7 people were ahead of me to try to make a point and be embarrasing. Buyer beware. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS BRANCH. See picture for state of the vehicle at time of pickup, which I was okay with considering I only needed it for less than 24 hours. The big issue and red flag here is it has been three days since I have dropped the vehicle off and it still has not been checked in yet. I returned the vehicle in the same condition received and with a full tank of gas. A Hertz employee directed me to park the vehicle in a parking spot near the Hertz Gold booth and to drop the keys in the car rental return dropbox which I did. I was leery about the process as I'm accustomed to getting a printed receipt upon drop off, but I had a flight to catch so I comply. I checked my email periodically throughout the rest of the day and no receipt. Then on Sunday, I look at my credit card activity and see $200 for the initial deposit on my credit card and now another $100 per day deposit has been added on Sunday and Monday. I've written and called their customer service team three times and they tell me they've notified the branch to close out the rental. Well, it's Tuesday morning and it's still open. I'd give negative five stars if I could and am now considering taking legal action. read more

I am a senior citizen and have been renting cars since I was in my twenties. This was by far the WORST rental car experience ever!!Paid top price for a rental car for family Thanksgiving holiday 11/22-29 at this location. 11/24 Check Engine light came on, car was stalling and wouldn't start. Called to inform Hertz, car started 20 mins later. 11/25 car won't start, had to call emergency roadside to get car started, they couldn't diagnose it,, couldn't offer replacement. Next gas up car won't start, check engine light on, finally started after 20 minutes. Called Hertz again, asked for replacement vehicle, had to drive over 200miles back to turn in for replacement vehicle. Replacement car dashboard wasn't lighting up. No staff there knew how to turn it on. Had to be swapped out for a 3rd vehicle! Spoke to manager, Julius Reeves, promised a credit for the rental upon return of the 3rd vehicle. This was the worst rental car experience I have ever had, and I'm 81 and travel extensively. Terrible problem returning the car. Woman was surly and unhelpful. Garage was dark and dingy. I asked for a printed receipt and she said she'd email one. It's three days and I still have no receipt. I have spent at least eight hours yesterday and today trying to get a receipt via the website I was told to use. The website is also terrible and not at all user friendly if you are trying to get a receipt. Best of all, the customer service number is not in service and the website takes you to a blank page. If it was possible to give ZERO stars, I would. I have had the worst experience with Hertz Rental Car this year and I want to make everywhere here aware of the problem so they can avoid such issues themselves in the future by choosing a rental car company with excellent customer service instead. In September, I had to fly out to Birmingham, Alabama to attend a funeral of a family member who had died of Covid-related complications. In preparation of that trip, I contacted AAA to look at their discount and partnership programs, because I'm a member. They suggested Hertz for my car rental needs, so I followed the link to their partner's website. Through Hertz's online portal, I rented a car to be picked up at the airport where I was flying in, and also opted into a program they offer online called "SKIP THE PUMP AND SAVE TIME", which allows you to pay a flat $$ fee to return a vehicle without refilling it with gas and they refill it for no additional charge. You pay that fee at the counter by giving the counter representative your credit card (the fee can be charged up front OR when you return the car--there was no requirement when it happened, only that the counter reps would take care of it for you on the credit card number you provided them so you didn't have to go stand in line again and wait for service, but could simply skip off to catch your flight without delays). I paid in advance for a specific car from Hertz (a small, fuel efficient SUV because I'm not comfortable driving big cars or gas guzzlers). However, when I arrived at the airport to pick it up, first I had to wait over an hour in the sweltering heat and humidity for the attendant to "process" the rental (he moved so slowly that people in line were grumbling over it), only to be told by him that they didn't actually have the vehicle I ordered. Okay, I rolled with it and accepted a Dodge Caravan -- a pretty big vehicle with a pretty big gas tank (20 gallons). On top of that, it had this weird electronic key that had a short in the ignition (sometimes it worked right, other times you had to play with it a bit for it to start up). Again, inconvenient and irritating, but I rolled with it because I knew if I disputed it, I'd end up waiting hours longer for another vehicle, given how slow the guy at the counter was moving. At the end of the visit, I returned the car with ~1/4th a tank of gas still left in it and went about my business of catching my flight home. The next day, a charge of over $200 appears on my credit card from this Hertz. They claimed I didn't return the van with fuel and charged me $9.99 a gallon + taxes to fuel it up. Additionally, there was some "MISCELLANEOUS FEE" on top of that, and when I called Hertz to inquire about it, I was told it was for an "upper airport concession fee". I called Hertz customer service to dispute the charge and explained the situation to the phone representative (read: that the airport counter people didn't charge me the flat fee for the "SKIP THE PUMP AND SAVE TIME" program I'd clearly opted into online and which my rental agreement even shows. Instead, they charged me to refuel the van). I tried to work it out with them to get them to simply reverse the fuel + taxes + "upped airport concession fee" and to simply charge me the flat fee for the "SKIP THE PUMP" program as they were supposed to do. They refused. I escalated it to a supervisor and went through the entire conversation again.....only to be told they would "look into it and get back" to me via phone. No one ever called me back. I emailed them at their customerrelations@hertz.com email, forwarding the copy of the contract and explaining the situation to them. I received no response. Over the ensuing 3 months, I have called the toll free number an additional 3 times to speak to supervisors and sent the email 5 more times to the same email address. No response to emails at all, and none of them on the phone would honor the agreement or own up to their employee's mistake in not charging the correct fees at the time of rental or even when the car was turned back in. The last supervisor I spoke to today was also condescending when I challenged his falling back on "we're just following the contract" response ("Well, that's what you believe," was what he'd actually said to me). I ended up having to dispute the charge with my credit card company instead and now am going through the lengthy process of filling out that paperwork. In the end, Hertz--which holds $24.6 BILLION in assets as of 2019--actually allowed their customer service team to haggle over ~$200 with a customer. Further, they refused to admit the mistake on their end (read: not charging my card for the "SKIP THE PUMP" program I'd opted into on their website and which clearly shows I'd done so on my contract) and correct it that mistake. Such poor customer service behavior has cost them my business for life. I will never again use or recommend them. read more

Absolutely mismanaged. Customers should not have to wait +2 hours for a vehicle if they have reservations made well in advance. Since they merged with Dollar you would think that they should have more personnel resource, or instead, they have 2 at the desk and 1 washing cars to service more than 50 customers all with reservations.
