I paid for a car rental in advance in order to get a preferred rate. The morning of the car rental I get the email below stating they did not have a car available for me. So they cancelled the reservation. Yet, they failed to refund my credit card. Phone calls to their customer service yielded no results. When I finally emailed nachfrafe@europcar.com, I am told I will get a refund once the car is returned. They didn't even acknowledge that the car rental transaction never took place and was cancelled by them. Poor business. Look elsewhere when you rent a car. But if you do have to rent a car from them, don't pay in advance to get a lower rate. Chances are the car will not be available and you will have to fight them to get your money back. For instance, they charged me 163 euros because the car was not clean when I gave it back. And they will try to charge you for several things when you are taking the car. Overcharged on Currency Transaction by Avis…read more I rented a car from Avis Budget Autovermietung in Berlin, Germany for two weeks in July 2021. The rental began through an online broker, Qeeq.com, and the price was quoted in Euros. At Avis, the rental agreement was also priced in Euros. We had to return the car after-hours, so I did not receive a final invoice until weeks later when we were back in the United States. Avis Budget Autovermietung charged us in US Dollars, resulting in overcharge of about 50 USD more than if they would have charged in Euros. After calling Visa, they removed the additional charge, but later added the charge back. The customer support at Qeeq.com also tried to help without success. The Avis rental agreement states that they will charge 4% over the Citibank conversion rate if the customer chooses to pay in a different currency, but I did not choose this. My credit card has no foreign transaction fees and my credit card statement (which Qeeq.com sent to Avis) shows that all other transactions in Germany before and after the Avis charge were made in Euros. After trying unsuccessfully for three months to get a refund on the over-payment, all that I can do is to warn others to be careful about being sure how you will be charged for your car rental with Avis.

When you're lucky enough to spot the Europcar store at Memhardstraße you will soon find out that there are no parking spots there and that you're supposed to get back into the car and drive into the next car park (where there are also no Europcar signs), drive the car down 3 levels to some guy waiting near a Europcar poster. On the plus side: all employees were friendly, but still: terrible experience. Never again!

I am writing this review not for their car rental but for their car2go driving license validation…read moreservice. Saying that I strongly believe this review is very relevant, as customer oriented service is part of the business culture. And clearly in Europcar customer is not first. When I tried to validate my driving license they asked not only for the minimum required documents but also for the infamous "anmeldung" document. Luckily I had the scanned PDF of this document on my laptop. Even though I showed this document to them, they refused to approve my driving license, saying that they need the original paper. I asked them why they need the original paper. They could not come up with a reasonable answer and they just told me that their process says they need to see the original paper...
