Bikes canals and…read moresunsets The Sandwich Conservation Area is basically a parking lot and small area right on the south east corner of the Cape Cod Canal. It's a great place to park for someone that wants to ride the south side of the bike path that runs the length of the canal. The parking lot of fairly large but in the summer months can get filled up remarkable quickly. Bikers, walkers as well as fishermen and photographers, flock here in the nice weather. There are relatively clean bathrooms as well as drinking fountains and benches. And of course the views are spectacular. Ships or all types going by and large birds flying and diving in water. At sunset the light over the water is pretty amazing, especially with the massive Sagamore Bridge looming in the distance. The Sandwich Conservation Area really isn't a whole lot more than a parking lot. It's what's around the parking lot that makes this area so cool.

The sites itself are big enough for a big tent, small tent + trailer. Places got a bbq or a pit for a fire. The only thing is that you can hear the highway very good. The beach itself was nice enough: decent sand, not rocky, not an over abundance of seaweed. That's where the enjoyment ended. That beach had a constant barrage of biting flies that annoy the crap out of you. They are small, relentless,painfully bite, and leave itchy marks where they bite. We stayed for 3 hours to try to get our $14 (parking fee) worth but after that, we left. I'll never go back since I now know those biting flies are an issue there and have been for years. Two thumbs down and I cannot recommend Scusset Beach to any beach goer who wishes to have a lovely day at the beach. Side note : the water was so cold also, with zero waves and contained floating seaweed. Terrible.

Boats bikes and…read morecanals The Bournedale Hills Trail is a roughly four mile loop that goes through some of the woods and hills of Buzzards Bay. Lots of ups and downs but nothing really strenuous although in the snow or icy weather it can get really slippery. You literally slide right down into the canal when the ice is mean. Perhaps the best thing about this trail is that it goes along the Cape Cod Canal and Bike Path for much of the way. You can watch the people go by on the bike trail or better yet all the boats on the canal. Lots of lovely sailboats, freighters, tankers and tugs pulling barges. You even get to see trains on the other side of the canal and if you're lucky you might see the cool, old lift railroad bridge moving up or down or perhaps a train gong over it. A nice little path with some really nice scenery. The path isn't that long or difficult but you can always park you bike, do the hike and then ride some more on bike path. Makes for a lovely day.

Cute beach on Buzzards Bay…read more First time in my life I have ever seen the sand being groomed. So nice for walking barefoot Parking is pretty cheap. Only $2 per hour if you don't have a resident permit. Be aware that the parking kiosks only take credit cards or coins. Dollar bills are not accepted. Since you are on the bay, little to no waves. Water is pretty shallow quite a ways out.

Guns ocean and…read morethorns The Sagamore Hill Historic Site is the remains of an old battery of two 155 mm artillery pieces that were placed here in WW 2 to protect the Cape Cod Canal and surrounding area against German subs. Like most coastal defense forts, the guns were never fired in anger and were removed after the war. The fort was decommissioned and turned into a park. The site has wide and open trails in the beginning and getting to the site where the old guns were is pretty easy. You can see a few remains of the artillery battery but the main attraction is the great views of the ocean and hills around Sagamore. The site is a nice place for some hiking, easy off road bike riding or snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter. However if you try and complete the whole loop be advised that the trail narrows considerably after you reach the artillery site and in the summer gets over grown with impressive thorns, very healthy poison ivy and hordes of ticks. A pleasant and seldom used place that offers a bit of history, great views of the ocean or some exercise. But like many trails in this area it's probably best left till the cold weather.
