Herlong Mansion review: Her (Kim, the owner) website states that the Mansion is the "most eloquent bed and breakfast in Florida". So that coupled with a $386 price tag for one night gave me great expectations. Right out of the gatem the trumped-up antique piano was a bomb. No self-respecting pianist worth their salt would be caught dead playing such an atrociously neglected and out of tune instrument. The website said we would be offered complementary wine or beer. Never happened. We paid extra $40 for two people in room, yet only one key. If you plan to sit at the table on the very hot (with no fans) balcony, take some cleaning wipes with you as it was filthy. The room door has a mounting for security chain, but no chain. The drapes just barely cover the glass on the windows. Disconcerting for sure. The wood floor is sticky beneath your bare feet. Yuck! Bathroom lighting is so poor you only hope you got your eyebrow pencil somewhere close to your eyebrows. The toilet is so low it must have been meant for children, oh wait, no children in the big house. Cheapest toilet paper ever, your fingers go right through it! The no slip strips on the bottom of the tub were loose and flying in the breeze. Safety first! A book about Floridian painters, antique or not, is only of value if one can actually turn the pages. When it is falling apart literally at the seams it is classified as junk! The cook, "E" was delightful and went above and beyond expectation. The layer of dust on every windowpane in the dining room was a little gross. Being old and decrepit does not qualify as "eloquent" , and is not worth the exorbitant price tag. read more

If you can forgive a little roughness around the edges, and you use the common areas, this can be a great experience. If I could break down this Inn's features, I would give the room 2.5 stars, the common areas 4 stars, and the breakfast 4 stars. We met this couple from Atlanta and we had a great time getting to know them, so 5 stars for that. Now the 'needs improvement' area, the room (ours was the Dogwood). Floors boards were cupped, and both the doors to the shower and toilet would not close due to the house settling. The doors to the upstairs common balcony would not easily open and all the locks were damaged or missing. The saving grace was the bed was super comfy! Beautiful old Greek-revival style manor house in the charming little town of Micanopy. Friendly service, large living room and common rooms and several porches. Guest rooms are on the second and third floors: no elevator, so if you have heavy suitcases, think twice. All the rooms are different. Second time we stayed here we did the Wisteria room, a pretty small room with no windows on the third floor, which wasn't as nice as the larger second floor rooms, so next time we'll know what to pick. Pets allowed only if you book the carriage house (just outside the main manor house) Overall, a nice place, we liked it. Great place if you love history. read more

This is a lovely bed and breakfast. Two story Victorian mansion in the small town of Micanopy. We had a pleasant stay. They serve wine in the afternoon and freshly baked cookies are available along with a Keurig coffee pot and hot water for tea. However, the temperature stays at 70 degrees, which was a little too cold for us. They have a lovely porch area with rocking chairs. We were disappointed in the breakfast which was a fruit cup with yogurt (tasty) 2 waffles with a small round sausage. We were expecting eggs and more of a gourmet breakfast due to the amount of money, we had paid for the room. The historic district of Micanopy used have lots of antique stores but now it is mainly gifty stores. read more

Worst place we've ever stayed in! Bed was sagging in the middle, no fridge, no tv or anything it the room. Definitely not kid friendly and some of the staff was so rude. I do not recommend this place at all. No separate AC unit they set the temperature and you just need to be happy they won't accommodate you. For the price you pay per night you would expect way more than what you're getting. Breakfast was wonderful and delicious. But still do not recommend this place read more

NEW MANAGEMENT! Important to note cause prior reviews were kind of cray... We were traveling to the area for a wedding and happened to stumble upon the mansion as an option for lodging. I immediately took advantage since I knew rooms there would be limited and boy am I glad I did! We opted to stay at the Pump House which is located outside of the main house. It was smaller than expected but has all the amenities you would need when staying away from home. The rooms in the mansion definitely seemed bigger and each had a different vibe/feel to it- I creeped into most of them to check them out. House dates back to 1845 so we are talking loads of history and mega cool feels. The innkeepers were awesome. Sweetest couple ever! We had a lovely breakfast every morning and there's also a little cafe right up the street if you want to venture out. It's a quiet residential area so not a whole lot of activity outside of the mansion. Location is right in the historical part of Micanopy. Very close to Paynes Prairie and about a 15-20 min ride to Gainesville and 20 minute ride to Ocala. Definitely enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to a future visit if ever in the area! read more

I am only here for two nights. Micanopy is a weird little town in Central Florida with a main street of shops and a few restaurants. Everything closes just at 5pm. The mansion itself is very impressive. Great care was taken to keep it true to the period it was built. It is full of antiques and polished floors. Comfortable sitting rooms with big chairs and fireplaces. We stayed in The Pump house, which is out behind the main house. The room was comfortable, the water pressure fine, a great bathtub (I would love one in my house). Repairs are taken care of quickly. And the afternoon snacks are yummy. The staff is very nice and helpful. I would visit and stay there again. read more

Such a cozy place with unique charm! The staff was incredibly friendly and the breakfast was made with love & some of the best pancakes I've ever had! They have coffee and tea out all day for the guests with such delicious mini muffins. I took like 10 of the banana and pumpkins won when we left for outings. Right down the street is the cutest historic area full of antiques and vintage items. Walking distance! I travel often to Gainesville to visit my daughter and events at UF. The Herlong is my favorite place to stay although it's much further out then the local hotels closer to school. I have this rating a four due to they are no longer accepting Collect & Redeem from Hotels.com. It's unfortunate for me because they do have availability but I'm unable to redeem and so I'd have to book elsewhere. read more

We stayed one night for rest and relaxation and got 2 cold showers. We told the young lady that checked us in and she acted "surprised". We stayed in the Iris room and we were comfortable and thank goodness the jacuzzi in it did have hot water, except that water was not clear, it had a brownish hue to it. I let it go and pretended we were at a lake. To the Owner: You can do better. Take cold shower complaints seriously, we paid $220 for 1 night and was offered nothing. Fix the pipes in the jacuzzi so that the water does not look brown. read more

I really enjoyed my stay here, the house and town are a real gem. The manager Heidi couldn't of been more pleasant and accommodating. The house is very clean, in good order as well as well as in really good condition. Sometimes these old places are a bit musty and a bit much for us with allergies but the Herlong Mansion was not. The room was excellent, clawfoot tub was a treat and breakfast was a real delight. You should should really make a point to enjoy all the Porches and room during your stay, it was interesting to learn learn the mansion was built on an existing house. For us, the most important characteristic of lodgings is a good night's sleep, which we could NOT get at the Herlong Mansion. When the temperature dipped into the 30s during the night, the remote in our room would not switch from air conditioning to heat. We were so cold, we had to fold our blankets in half to increase warmth. We still shivered throughout the night. The nice young woman who checked us out the next day explained that the mini-split HVAC units in the upstairs rooms are linked. This means all the remotes have to be on either air conditioning or heat at the same time. Later, it can be changed, but initially they all have to be on the same system. Amanda, who checked us in, apparantly had not been trained to set the upstairs remotes properly. The next morning, I spoke with guests from three other upstairs rooms, and none had heat during the night. One woman shared that she woke up cold during the night. Two other two couples stated their room was cold, but both were visiting from Scandinavia and were accustomed to sleeping cold. The nice young woman who checked us out said she would ask the owner to call us about our request for consideration on our bill. It's been nearly a week, and we haven't heard from him. Herlong Mansion is nicely decorated, the beds are comfortable and the staff is friendly and helpful, but we were very unhappy with their poor handling of this problem. We have found B&Bs to offer much more efficient and responsive customer service when the owner is on-site. Next time we visit Micanopy's charming shops and good restaurants, we'll stay in Gainesville. read more

This location was beautiful on the outside and the staff was very nice but the location seemed very commercialized and not very personal like other bed and breakfast locations we visited. The room was well kept and clean. The breakfast was meh and seemed as if not much thought was put into the meal options and preparation. Beautiful home and beautiful stay. Cozy, inviting, peaceful, and just what I needed for my birthday getaway. My hubby and I stayed for 2 nights and enjoyed every minute of this Old Florida gem. The breakfasts were incredible, the staff was super friendly and I felt at home. Katherine is a perfect host and her chocolate chip cookies were delicious. We enjoyed strolling the street and visiting each antique shop and little restaurant. I believe Herlong Mansion is now our permanent getaway spot. Don't hesitate to book a room! The inn was very clean and the breakfast was ok, nothing to write home about. They served a Kale quiche , sausage and a fruit cup. Apparently, the cook was out sick and, therefore , a third course was not offered. . We normally stay at Select Registry Inns that must meet certain criteria to be a member. This Inn was lacking in the amenities we are used to. We were a bit underwhelmed about our stay. I was looking forward to a nice soak in the claw foot tub after our long drive from southern Fl. However, when I turned on the water to fill the tub, the water was rust colored! I thought that maybe it was from old, rusty pipes and it would clear up after running the water for a bit. That was not the case! They need to correct this issue and have potable water for bathing and drinking! The bed felt like it was filled with crushed paper! It crinkled every time we turned over or got out of bed!! Overall, the Inn was located in a small, quiet town, but improvements are needed to elevate the standards to operate a quality inn. read more

This was a very peaceful place to stay. My husband and I felt very safe and we were able to socially distance without a problem. We stayed in the Carriage House. Breakfast is included and we were able to eat outside. We picnicked for lunch with items that we purchased at Publix on the way in. Dinner required some planning because the downtown closes early - but Gainesville is close and we were able to eat at outside tables. Our stay at the Herlong was great! With the pandemic going on, we weren't able to take a trip further away for our honeymoon, and the Herlong was the perfect spot for our "mini-moon" - not too close and not too far from Gainesville, lovely rooms (the jacuzzi in the Carriage House is awesome!), and beautiful trees and landscaping all around. It was nice to sit on the porch and sip some wine in the afternoon, or coffee in the morning after a delicious hot breakfast. Im so happy to hear there are new owners of this bed & breakfast. We stopped there a couple years ago to look around for a nice place to stay on a future trip to the area. Unfortunately, the lady (owner) was so rude and just obnoxious that we (4 ladies) decided to never go back there. So happy to know there are new owners and reviews are great now. Mansion accommodations was outstanding! Grounds were magnificently manicured and breathtaking. This was a 180 from our previous stay two years back or so. My wife and I decided to return to the mansion upon hearing that it was under new management. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Heidi - Manager / Inn Keeper & Chef whom, provided us with a tour of the mansion and grounds. Most notable, was Heidi's' knowledge and understanding of the Mansion's history / ownership dating back to its very creation to present. The unanticipated tour coupled with the offering of freshly baked cookies and refreshing assortment of drink was truly noteworthy. With regards to the morning breakfast, you could smell the homemade waffles and eggs benedict casserole / scramble from the highest floor of the mansion. The aromas were delightful and mouthwatering. Heidi, Bonnie (Chef), and her daughter Sara (Staff); were very professional, courteous and welcoming! Heidi truly went out of her way to ensure our stay was perfect! Chef Bonnie and Sara (daughter / Staff) - the food was delicious! Thank you all for a wonderful stay! We will be sure to come again and recommend your established to friends and family!
