My daughter is an 8th grader this year at Hathaway Brown middle school and she has been telling me how at lunch her and her eight friends want to sit together. So they have been sitting at two connected tables that equal eight seats for each girl (apparently this table has always been like this). But suddenly they've been noticing that the other half of there table keeps getting moved to be apart of another half table, so they keep having to move the other half table back and forth every lunch day just so they can sit together. (They can't switch to another table because all of them are taken up by different grades/people). So one day my daughters friend is moving the other half of the table like usual and then out of no where apparently a teacher comes screaming at her to not move the table and that nobody can move tables anymore. So now there is only room for six girls at the table so they decide to grab two more chairs to squeeze into the table to include there two friends, that is very nice. But the same teacher comes out and starts screaming at the same girl again about how they cannot move chairs at all. Why does it matter so much? My daughter said that the teacher said that it's ok the six girls will sit at a table and the other two will sit at a table alone be cause they need to engage with other kids an snake new friends. I'm sorry but that is excluding two girls from the rest of there friend group and that's also breaking apart a strong friendship with the girls. It's the 8th grade everybody has there groups by now and they know who they like and don't like, and if they don't have that then there is definitely something wrong with your kid. Hathaway Brown School is a good school but they are just so weird about the whole friend thing, don't send your kids here if you don't like this.

If you have a bright child who needs motivation, it's probably OK. But if you have an average child who is a hard worker or, heaven forbid, and under-performing child, this will be an extremely stressful environment for your her. My daughter has some special challenges to learning which were made extremely clear before we enrolled her. With the cost of the school (close to or exceeding tuition for an undergraduate degree each year) I was genuinely shocked that Hathaway Brown's first solution was to ask us for more money for a private tutor within a month ! If you have a child with additional needs, do not go to the school. I do believe that the teachers genuinely care about the students, other than one of the female math teachers who is basically a bully. Summary statement: if you're the kind of parent who has to ensure your child has every advantage to get into an Ivy League school at any cost, send her to HB. Just realize that the school caters to superstars. And if your daughter is not one of them, she will be made to feel pretty bad about herself and placed under extreme pressure until you unenroll her or comply with paying for multiple extracurricular tutors.

It is a truly unique and wonderful place. I am saddened and surprised by the reports of bullying I see in one of the posts. I can say that in my four years I NEVER saw any bullying. I ask my sons about it periodically and they tell me the same thing. Honestly, probably a sampling error in both instances. It probably happens from time to time. It is not a perfect place. I can say that if it happens it is not widespread or one of my three sons would have seen it somewhere, some time. I am sad to hear about it and my heart goes out to anyone who has been mistreated or made to feel unwelcome. There is no place for that in any community, of faith, of learning .. of anything. It just has not been a part of my experience at the school. So, what has been my experience? Good and caring faculty and staff genuinely interested in not only educating but inspiring students. The school is focused on the care of the individual person and launching Men for Others into the world. Ignatius is not interested in their students and the community just being ok. Ignatius wants its students and its community to be excellent. The connection to the near West Side is palpable. Students are encouraged - and to a certain extent required - to engage in service in the community. They are expected to invite the 'real world' into their lives and think critically about and pray for it. They are encouraged to respond to the 'real world' constructively and actively. When I attended freshman orientation for my oldest son the principal said *you give us the boy, we will give you the man. " I can say that Ignatius has delivered on that promise, contributing in a huge way to molding my sons into good, Christian men. If you are looking to continue (or to experience for the first time) Catholic education done right, send your son here. You will not be disappointed.

I just wish I'd understood that plenty of local schools are so much better. Ignatius routinely employs uncertified alumni with little experience. Two teachers and a coach were emotionally and psychologically abusive. I was a year younger than all the other students which doesn't help in this toxic environment. Homophobia and racism are endemic. Zero science during freshman year, zero opportunity to socialize with girls. Ignatius now offers a health science mentoring and internship program, probably because they noticed very few of us smarties were prepared for medical studies. They had to improve their game given the exhorbitant tuition and inferior curriculum compared to good public schools in the area that have four years of science, superior arts programs, healthier culture and don't subject young boys to four years of mandatory religious indoctrination. They actually told us there was zero networking for medical school. It seems like efforts were made to improve, but I would never send my son's here or indeed to any "Catholic" school after my experience. If your parents hold you back a year or two in one of the local "Catholic" grade schools, play football and the administration will shepherd you with better instructors and manipulate your record to improve your GPA.

She started in the primary program, completed that three-year learning cycle, and is now in the elementary program as a 1st grader. Cleveland Montessori stays true to the Montessori method outlined by Dr. Montessori, and in these turbulent times, especially in the public education and curriculum space, it is comforting to know that my daughter is learning from the time-tested materials. The other thing that is important to me about raising children in our culture is that the school is screen-free. The children have a warm, analog space to love to learn for a lifetime. Lastly, it has to be noted that the school is housed in a century-old building with character, nestled in historic Little Italy blocks away from University Circle, and they walk (in all weather) to a fabulous playground in the neighborhood! All in all, a very, very good choice for building an amazing foundation for life.

As a parent of a child with special needs, do not send your child here. The process for the IEP is…read moreslow and inefficient. It took more than half of the school year for them to complete the initial process. I requested my child's IEP before school started and they didn't even start the process until November 2024 when break happened. Then they didn't even start observations until January 2025. Afterwards, during the mid end of the year they stopped some interventions (February - March 2025), and when I noted concerns they said they would start them again, which I believe is illegal for them to do without proper procedures. Also, one day, I came to the school to pick up my child, and there was a child with special needs (autism) sitting on the sidewalk near the busy street. I got the child to come back inside of the building, when we came I went to the assistant principal and the school didn't even know that the child was out there. The assistant principal didn't even seem as concerned. She asked the girl why was she out there like it was the girls fault. How is that even possible. The teachers do not have proper educational materials to give the children. My child would receive hand written worksheets that were copied, and some of the information would be cut off. Then they would say they would have homework, but it would be something that a younger student could do and not grade appropriate. I feel like my child deteriorated education wise since being at TIS. I do not believe the new principal and assistant principal are suited to run the school. They need more experience in management, educational rules, and procedures. They come across as caring of a child's need, but in reality they don't have enough skills to handle the positions. The discipline procedures are bias, and not fairly administered. Also, the school is not proactive in planning for school events. Often times events would be canceled or delayed, due to lack of planning and preparation. I mean, overall, the school concept is great, but the administration including the CEO/Board are concerned about the business more than a great education. This is probably why the other school closed down and merged with TIS east.

I was so excited for my daughter to attend Heights because I thought it was a good school. My daughter started Heights in 2023, ever since then this has been the WORST experience I have had from grades not being accurate to a secretary going into my daughter's student record and making changes. This is the worst school system I reported this misconduct to the school board and the superintendent. The superintendent asked a "chief of schools " to look into this and nothing happened to the staff member they all just covered up for her but my daughter was recommended for expulsion. While she was not expelled she was told she should enroll in AEP-Alternate to Expulsion Program. First of the administration I believe is corrupt. My daughter in no way should have been removed from the school. I reported this to Cleveland Heights-University Heights School district, the school board and the superintendent and NOTHING was done.
