It's right on 9th near The National - FYI, 9th is a one way street so you may have to go up 10th for a block and loop back around. The name on the door is "BC Modern Furniture" and they're open Fri-Sun from 10-4. In addition, they run estate sales and host one day flea markets so check their website for upcoming events and sales. If you visit the store, know that it's mostly mid-century furniture with some same era collectables thrown in. It's not a huge place but it's very, very well curated. This is some of the nicest looking vintage furniture I've seen in town - lots of sideboards, dressers, end tables and some truly glorious sofas. Prices are commensurate with the quality - a big 2 piece sectional sofa with immaculate original upholstery was in the $600 range. That said, they're willing to negotiate so if you see something you love, have the conversation. The Mister grabbed a fun Maifest stein and a vintage German decor mag from 1964 for $10, so we left happy. They are adding things all the time so if you're trying to up the hipster cachet on your sweet Bay View bungalow definitely check them out.

He drove down from Milwaukee to Racine just to sit with us, talk and give us a lot of helpful info. We didn't really have any items that he deals in but he still sat with us and was very helpful. They had us mark the items that we didn't want to sell and write out a list of these items so that they would make sure they wouldn't sell these items. My question is, "why do that when they never intended to keep their promises?" Mr. Kirby promises many wonderful things but most of it didn't happen. From telling us that they could handle selling our expense jewelry and furs under a bidding regimen. However, the day before the sale he told me they wouldn't do this. Upsetting but I understood. Mr. Kirby also said that there would be five people there to watch over the people who showed up for the sale in order to prevent theft, that didn't happen either! The first day of the sale was also the first snow of the season so we were told that it was slow which we understood. The second day we were told that it was very, very busy, which makes sense, everything was 50% off. In the end, there was a lot of stealing, selling of items that were marked and listed "Not" to sell, breaking up of collections that make it impossible to sell or give away now that the sale is done. But this wasn't the worst, when we call Mr. Kirby about the items that shouldn't have been sold, he told us that it was our fault. That they didn't babysit our items, that they took us as a customer because no one else would take us and then hung up on us. The truth is that we didn't call anyone else, he sold us that first day we met with him. We were fooled and he got away with it. I'm a true believer "that what comes around goes around." Let's hope that faith handles that for us!

They were sincerely trying to help me and looked through all the phones there (a lot ) every time I went in. You know how it is. You tell yourself you're going to back up those PICs and the information on all the people you need to stay in occasional connection with but you just don't realize how much you don't do this until you lose a phone. But the weeks turned into months and I gave up hoping I'd ever recover that phone and then 6 months later this nice fellow from Ford Bros. tracked me down by calling my contacts to return my phone! He gets abandoned phones in lots from places like municipal governments or whatever and before he sells any of them he goes through each of them to make sure they are clean and that is just unbelievable. Mine was in a lot he picked up from some town in Southeast Wisconsin so how it got there from State Fair is a mystery that will probably never be solved. He went through a lot of trouble to return my phone to me and then tried very hard to refuse my reward. Actually I'm not sure that he ever even cashed my cheque. That was Cole but I'm betting his brother is just as ethical. They have a Milwaukee location too, if you need to move antique, collectible goods or liquidate an estate you can bank on the honesty of this operation.

Fair pricing, clear organization, and a calm, enjoyable experience (which is rare in this world) make every sale worth showing up for. But what truly sets them apart is the heart behind it. This is a hardworking family, and it shows in the way they treat every home, every item, and every customer--with genuine respect. As someone with an average household, I appreciate being able to find beautiful, unique pieces at prices that actually make sense--without turning to big-box stores or paying for shipping. It feels good to support a business that values both people and sustainability. They're not just selling items--they're giving pre-loved pieces a second life and keeping them out of landfills. If you see their name on a sale, go. You won't regret it.

The big box jeweler had a guy come once a month to do it, and of course I just missed that date so I had to wait a whole month. The whole time I was afraid that something might happen to it while it being uninsured. After getting it appraised, I was shocked to see how much they charged me for the appraisal. They definitely didn't let me know that it was going to be that much when I talked to them on the phone. It was like a monthly ring payment. Now, this year I had bought a wedding/anniversary band for my wife. And I was faced with the same issue...where to get it appraised. I had to wait for the date this guy would show up and they charged an arm and a leg. For a $1000 ring they wanted $150 to do the appraisal. So I decided to look elsewhere. I stumbled upon Midwest Gem Lab, Inc on Yelp. I went to their website, and their business looked very professional. What I liked best about them was that they offered their rates up front (no hidden costs). And their rates were half that of what I would have paid anywhere else...either from where I went to last time, or anywhere that I researched. So I decided to give them a call. They answered the phone promptly and were very polite and very helpful answering my questions. I asked them if I could make an appointment to drop the ring off. I started to look at my calendar for dates that were two weeks out. But she told me that I could stop by today and it would only take an hour! Wow, that is great. I wasn't expecting that. I decided to stop in the following day. Their building was very easy to get to. It's right on Bluemound and Calhoun. As I entered, I was politely greeted and taken back to her office. I gave her my ring and then left to run an errand. I came back and she was already waiting for me with my ring and the appraisal. She explained the appraisal and informed me what she did to come up with that value. Fantastic...last guy never explained anything. It was the easiest process ever to get my ring appraised, and she was the nicest person to work with. And you can't beat their rates! I will definitely be back in the future. I definitely recommend Midwest Gem Lab Inc. Very professional and knowledgeably, great rates and great service.
