Don't let the name fool you, Herb and Spice Food Shop is a fully-stocked grocery store. But don't look for KD or Chef Boyardi, Herb and Spice specializes in organic/environmentally friendly-only dry ingredients, produce and cleaning supplies. They have a great bulk section where you can pick up all kinds of grains, pastas, dried fruits, nuts and coffee beans. You can do your organic shopping and, if food shopping makes you peckish, you can even eat in the store. They offer two kinds of hot soups and dozens of various baked goods (all to suit any dietary need - sugar free, gluten free, etc.). I even saw this woman dropping of tubs of fresh vegetable and chicken samosas. The staff look a little goth/artsy, but they are quite friendly and really know their products. As for parking, this stretch of Bank is strictly metered.

Some interesting products.

We live literally across the street, so we go to Herb and Spice almost daily. It's expensive, but the convenience of having vegan and gluten free options right outside my door is often worth the extra cost. They carry a good selection of products from other local businesses (Starwberry Blonde, Thimblecakes, Ottawa Bagel Shop etc.) and a pretty good range of quick lunch options as well as general groceries. Student discount day is Sunday, so if you have a student card do your shopping then for 10% off.

My first visit to a Whole Foods Market was years ago, after completing a job interview in Yorkville…read morein Toronto. I definitely remember what I got: a slice of tiramisu. At that time, it was the only Whole Foods in the greater Toronto area. Whole Foods has grown on me, likely because Markham has one and I frequent it often. I don't fit the profile of a typical Whole Foods shopper who tends to carry expensive handbags, must get everything organic, and can afford all things expensive, including tiny bottles of elixirs that extend their years on planet Earth. I like their dairy-free items. I love Carbonaut bread and the entire bakery section, including tiramisu. There are specific items that I get at this store. If I'm looking for romaine lettuce or celery, you'll likely see me at a grocery store that offers these items at normal, cheaper prices. Four years ago, I was in the Glebe and saw this Whole Foods store. I didn't go in. I had already got what I needed at a Metro. On my most recent visit, after spending a few hours exploring the area with a friend, I realized that I needed almond beverage and lemons. I had yet to set foot in any grocery store. They were good reasons to check this store out. I had parked underground. The elevator got me to this store. I exited the elevator on the main floor to hit Winners. This store has a cafe that occupies the entire floor. It was busy just before noon. People must love getting coffee and a baked good here. When I returned just past 5 pm, you could hear crickets on this floor. The cafe was closed. It was different. My local one is still open when I'm there at 7 pm. I have yet to hit the cafe at any Whole Foods location. I took the escalator up to the second floor, which is where the entire supermarket is. I immediately found almond beverage. Organic. Sugar-free. Perfect. I also found the produce area. The Rainier cherries looked good. They were also so expensive that I blocked the price out and moved on. I got a couple of lemons. You could get a bag of six. The price was the same if you calculated how much one lemon was going for, so you might as well pick your own pristine-looking lemons. I looked around. It has the usual salad and hot food bars. You pay by weight, which does add up if you aren't careful. There were lots of snacks and drinks to choose from. A can of flavoured carbonated water was going for $2.69. It makes you wonder how this store determines the prices that it sets. It was enjoyable looking at the plants and flowers. It's a nice grocery store. I had an equally nice woman at the checkout area. I paid for my items with a debit card. I didn't need a bag. My lemons were already in one, so I carried it and my carton of almond beverage to the elevator. It was convenient taking the elevator down to the underground parking lot. I walked to my car, paid for parking, and left. The lemons and almond beverage were great. I'm glad that I got what I needed at this store. I had a fun time shopping here. It's my second Whole Foods that I've been to where it has two floors. We'll see if I return in another four years. Maybe I'll try the cafe... haha! (262)

I mean it overhyped in my opinion! It's pricey and in this economy who ca affort 10& strawberries!read more

I know what you are thinking..."this is one of those touristy, generic olive oil shops that I see…read morein places like Niagra Falls". No, this is NOT the case. The Unrefined Olive is definitely not one of those standard, gimmicky shops. It is owned by a husband and wife team who are beyond passionate about food, and the products which they sell. The olive oils here are checked, and then double checked, for quality. Having partaken in guided olive oil tastings in the past, and I went into this shop thinking I knew a lot about olive oils. I ended up learning so much more from the owner and realizing how much more there is to learn! I am IN LOVE with the basil olive oil here. Having dinner guests and want to look like a professional chef? Just pour some infused olive oil on top of what you are serving. Want to make pizza night "fancy pizza night"? Drizzle some basil olive oil on top. Oh, and your salads will never be the same. The bottles here are also really nice looking and would make great gifts. Who am I kidding...I plan to keep mine all for myself ;-).

The Unrefined Olive is an Olive Oil and Vinegar merchant. Sounds a bit boring right? It isn't!…read more When you walk in, you notice the cleanliness and orderliness of the store. High tables neatly stacked with round stainless steel containers - holding either olive oil or vinegar. What's fun about this is - you can taste test! The staff is knowledgeable. They explain how the store works, what the general groupings are - and if you ask, will also give recommendations. We ended up with a while balsamic vinegar infused with pear - which, we are told, is wonderful on salad even without an oil. There are many many choices. Go check it out. This is (to me) a bit of a gourmet heaven - so go in with the right mindset for prices. (What I'm telling you: It's not inexpensive - but I think based on the product and service that it's not out of the realm of reality either.) Besides the Olive Oil and Vinegar, they have a small selection of other high quality cooking oils. Might be good to go in with a bit of a plan - for example - know that you are looking for an oil for dipping bread... or for salad... or for cooking - otherwise you may have a hard time making a choice. Would I return: Yes Would I recommend: Yes
