I used to come here back when I was at college at EC and recently stopped by when I was in town for…read morea visit. Nice homebrew store on the southside of Elmira. The owner is wicked nice and very knowledgeable. The place is pretty small but he packs alot of stuff in there. The prices are pretty reasonable. The place usually looks closed but I think that is because he is usually next door, but when you ring the doorbell which seems to be connected to the house next door he usually comes right over to open the place up. Not sure if he has regular hours so it couldn't hurt to give the place a call before heading over.

It definitely is NOT the largest home brew store I've seen but he carries a very nice selection of…read morebasic equipment along with ingredients. His prices are definitely reasonable and as an example, I was in the market for new carboys ( 5 & 6.5 gal ) to use as primary and secondary fermenters. I looked online and I did find them a few dollars cheaper. Then I calculated shipping costs and the store beat the best I could find by over $10. Along with a variety of DME and LME... if you're doing whole grain brewing or just need / want specialty grain for your recipe - chances are that he will have it. The only thing I've gone looking for that he didn't have available was smoked grains ( UK Peated ). The only "complaint" I have is a bit of a lack of variety for yeast strains that the store has in stock. If you're looking for something suitable for a pale ale, IPA or something along those lines - he'll have you covered. If you're looking for an abbey ale or even a lager strain then it can be hit or miss. So that's my "complaint" and there is a reason that word is in quotes. The thing is that he does a monthly order for his store and if you have a yeast strain you want that he isn't currently carrying - you can order and he'll get it for you. Its not just yeast either... if you want to order some 55 lb bags of grain then he is more than happy to take care of that too... or pretty much anything else his distributor(s) carry. The other nice thing about the shop is that the owner is a very experienced home brewer himself and as mentioned by the other reviewer, a nice guy. That means if you're new to home brewing, he is more than happy to help and he will not try to oversell you. The only downside is that if you're an experienced home brewer and start talking recipes or technique - that 5 minute trip to pick up a few ingredients can easily turn into an hour long venture. That's not necessarily a bad thing though.

He needed to…read morestop and pick up some supplies, and as this place was close to a spot where we met friends for lunch, we headed over. Artisan Home Brew is a business that has been here for quite some time, which says something in the era of home brew becoming popular, then fading from popularity. Lots of places sprung up during that time, then closed as demand dropped. That they have survived shows their dedication to the art of home brewing and their understanding of who their customer is and what they're looking for. This is not a fancy place, nor is it a place for people to stop and pick up a six pack. They don't sell beer, just all the ingredients and supplies, along with some supplies for wine making. They have some beginner supplies, kits and such, though this is a small part of their inventory. It's an old space with clean swept wooden floors and exposed beam ceilings, part of which have coasters from various craft breweries stapled. Shelves are unadorned, lined with various items, bins of different grains line one wall. The staff are quite knowledgable and friendly, with a club-like atmosphere where discussing the craft is as important, if not more important, then selling the product. Lion joined in on the banter, then made his purchase with a firm handshake and a thanks from both. I have a feeling this is going to become a place he visits often.
