OK, there were these two traveling salesmen who meet in the middle of Alexanderplatz and their conversation goes something like this... - "So I went to the store to buy a henway." - "What's a henway?" - "Oh, about a couple of pounds." (cue for a rimshot...ba-bump-bump) That vaudeville routine has nothing to do with this casual place, but Berliners appear to know to go the way of Henne for their cock-a-doodle-do fix. In the funky bohemian 'hood of Kruezberg, that would be a Henne way ...get it? Oh never mind. Anyway, chicken appears to be pretty much the only entree you can get here, a half of a Jungmasthähnchen, which literally translates to "broiler chicken" (see photo). There's no doubt about that since it came out steaming hot. Watch your fingers! But before you get the chicken, you get a big glop of potato salad, which is ironically not the German kind with vinegar but rather the down-home Paula Deen kind with lots of egg and mayo (see photo). It's treated as an appetizer since the chicken just comes with a slice of bread. The skin is so hot and crispy that it tastes like it was fried in a salty bath of oil. I was happy to discover the meat to be juicy for the most part, although the breast did dry out compared to the leg and thigh. It was satisfying poultry which I ate in their patio area where I shared a picnic table with a nice German guy from Dusseldorf. When I told him I flew on Swiss Air to Berlin, he asked how I could fit in their seats. Ouch! At least the only English-speaking waitress was not as judgmental as she kept giving me glasses of Coca Cola Light to wet my burning tongue. All told, the bill came to 15 Euros - not bad given the amount of comfort food you get and of course, the exorbitant currency exchange rate. FOOD - 4 stars...hearty chicken comes out finger-burning hot AMBIANCE - 3 stars...like having a backyard kegger with a bunch of strangers SERVICE - 4 stars...she was really accommodating to this solitary American tourist TOTAL - 4 stars...good frickin' chicken

LOL we started eating before we snuck a pic. There's a sign that says no photos inside at the door...the hen twas bomb!

Came here because I found it on a blog about the best cheap eats around Berlin and also because I'm a fan of eating half hens. Only in Berlin will you feel perfectly ok about eating half a hen to be honest ha. The blog I read said this place was famous because JFK came here after one of his speeches to have a beer and that his autograph is somewhere (I dont know I didn't look/see his autograph). But I guess this place is a way to feel fancy/Berlin on a budget so I would definitely recommend it! You need a reservation, but I booked it one day in advance and got a spot for two people on a Wednesday night. Upon arrival, you'll see a notice on the door that says "no pictures allowed inside." Berlin never let's you take pictures inside -_- so we snuck some pictures of our food, but didn't take pictures of the interior. It's two stories and we were seated upstairs. My friend described it as "I feel like I'm at my German grandmother's attic for dinner" so you can imagine what that looks like. Half hen = 8,50 Potato salad = 3,50 Sauerkraut = 3,50 The half hen was bomb (fried and very crispy, a little salty). I ate all of it, it was glorious. The sauerkraut wasn't cooked, so it crunchy and more sour than sweet. I would recommend getting the potato salad instead (tastes good when you eat it with the bread that comes with the hen). There is bottled still or mineral water that's around 3, skip that and just order beer. The waitresses were really busy and moved around a lot. I thought one was kind of rude, but whatever I feel like it's an American thing to expect super friendly servers ha so I guess don't mind it.

The peeps were friendly in their own way. Took a little bit of time but eventually they seemed to warm to me. One huge biker dude took a shine to me and kept joking with me all night in broken English. At the end of his night (which was quite early) he swooped in and gave me a kiss on the cheek and wished me a lovely vacation. The bathrooms were cleaner and nicer than the cobalt/funkys/astoria from my dives back home in Vancouver - seriously Vancouver, get your shit together - LITERALLY. Drink prices seemed super reasonable to me. But really anywhere in Europe they seem reasonable to me. Bartender didn't really know how to make a whiskey sour and what I ended up drinking wasn't that fantastic, but I think that's my fault, what the hell was I doing ordering a whiskey sour at this place? Beer seems to be the best bet. The place filled up quick and seemed very popular with the locals and tourists alike.

Grab a beer and enjoy great DJs, awesome bands and even a regular burlesque show! I had been told to go here by various people who had travelled there to perform with their bands and I'm glad I listened to their advice. One final tip - make sure to go next door and eat at Tiki Heart.

Lerchen+Eulen is one of these places. it's been one of my go-to spots in this neighborhood for years and i don't see that changing. Svenja's review is right on: there are plenty of bars like this around Berlin --cozy secondhand furniture jumbled together like a bad Tetris game, warm low lighting, great coffee+alcohol-- but the specific details set it apart. the staff are amazingly friendly (seriously, i wonder where they find these saints!), their cakes are always delicious and the perfect balance to their coffee, and you can get whatever kind of seat your little heart desires: curling-up-with-book benchseats in the big windows, working-with-laptop table seats, barstools for hanging with the bartenders, cuddling-sofas, and outdoor tables in summer for people-watching. it's a great spot for most times: earlier in the day, it's mellower and emptier (and less like a smokehouse), so is nice for working or catching up with friends. the wooden-tiled floors (very cool!) and brick archways, the old jazz and blues on the stereo, the old chairs and wooden tables decorated with fresh flowers and candles in big jars, make the space feel somehow a bit like a country inn during the day, a perfect pause from the bustle of the Markthalle next door. when Lerchen+Eulen fills with people at night, the dense layout and multiple rooms make for a wonderful coziness for huddling together...and Drinking (with a capital 'D'). Svenja's right, their Moscow Mules hold their own, but they're also one of the few bars in the area to serve the delicious local Potsdamer Stange beer from the Braumanufaktur. all in all, a perfect addition to your full weekend ritual on Pücklerstrasse: stop by the Pony Hütchen for second-hand gear+furniture, then the Markthalle Neun for groceries+lunch, then to Lerchen+Eulen for all your caffeinated and alcoholic needs...
