Don't let this scathing review scare you from playing. It is a TREMENDOUS layout, and the maint. staff does an amazing job given the limited funds from the lack of a GM who coulnd't even run a child's lemonade stand. If you are a dad bringing kids, or a 20 something, don't bother because the GM or his crazy wife will run you off. If you expect a variety of food at the snack bar, forget it. You'll get hot dogs or chips. The inept GM is afraid to turn on the grill who doesn't respect ANY of the workers who strive to make this course great. The greens are in terrific shape! The price is very agreeable and it's pretty easy to get a tee time. Don't let the 12 WANTED posters behind the counter of kids who GOD FORBID ride their bicycles in the parking lot deter you. If you're a cyclist or a kid in the neighborhood who wants an over-priced Gatorade or candy bar, forget it. The GM (MIKE YUN) won't sell you squat, even it makes the course money. In short, the course is good despite the COMPLETE lack of leadership. The superintendent and staff manage what they can and do a FABULOUS job with what they have, despite the short-sightedness of a GM who would rather put $$ into a fence to keep NEIGHBORS off the course than put money into improving the tees read more

Extremely Disappointing Experience Today was one of the worst experiences I've had since I started golfing. We decided to play Hells Point, and unfortunately it was a mistake from the moment we arrived. We booked 18 holes with a 4:06 p.m. tee time, but no one informed us when we made the reservation that only the front nine was open. We completely understand that this has been an exceptionally wet year and that course conditions sometimes require closing holes. That happens. What was disappointing was the lack of communication, the rudeness of most of their staff, the condition of the fairways and greens and the unrealistic "tee advantage" for women. When we checked in, one young employee (he looked 18) was trying to run both the pro shop and the snack bar by himself. He was doing the best he could under the circumstances, but it was obvious he had been put in an impossible situation. The kid cleaning carts looked 12; which made sense after the fact bc no adult would probably want to work for such an awful organization. The course conditions were terrible. Every bunker on the front nine was completely filled with standing water--water that appeared to have been there for much longer than just the recent rain. At some point, if the bunkers are consistently unplayable, it would make more sense to fill them in and grow grass than to leave hazards that can't realistically be used. You would need hip boots--and maybe even a snorkel--to play out of them. Play was extremely slow, as we waited on nearly every hole for a single golfer ahead of us. When we made the turn after the first nine, the snack bar was closed and most of the clubhouse doors were locked. Since only the front nine was open, we decided to play it again as a best-ball round so we could move even faster. On the second hole, the same employee who had been running the pro shop and snack bar was now serving as the marshal. He asked us to be back at the clubhouse by 7:30 p.m. Sunset wasn't until approximately 8:12 p.m., so there seemed to be plenty of time. Less than five minutes later, while we were in the middle of the third hole, the owner drove up and told us we had to leave immediately. It was only 7:07 p.m.--more than 20 minutes before the time we had just been given. We returned to the clubhouse, unloaded our clubs, and brought the carts back. I politely asked the owner if he would consider refunding our second nine since we had only played two holes before being told to leave. He didn't respond, simply turned around, and walked away. Ironically, the highlight of our visit was an older gentleman with long white hair who greeted us earlier in the day. We discovered we were both originally from Pennsylvania, and he couldn't have been friendlier. As we were leaving, I told him he had been the best part of our experience. Poor communication, disappointing course conditions, and dismissive customer service completely overshadowed the afternoon; however the company was great! I got to play shitty golf with 2 of my kiddos. We won't be returning. Please somebody who has a passion for the sport BUY THIS course and make it great again! read more

Excellent! Friendly and helpful staff. The course was in great shape and this is after a big storm a week ago. Greens are on the fast side which is fine with me. I am a senior so i play from the gold tees which are challenging enough. I highly recommend this course. I only wish i lived closer so i could play here often. I played 18 after 1:00 PM so it was a great price and included the cart. read more

Attention golfers low and or high handicap. If you want to have a fun day of golf and enjoy a couple of drinks afterwards in a nice 19th hole then this is NOT THE PLACE YOU WANT TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The course is struggling. The snack bar is open when the owner (rudest jerk I have ever met) thinks he wants to staff it. You cannot take the cart to your car to get or drop off your clubs. If you do you get to interact with the above mentioned owner. If you want to play golf on the cheap and don't care about anything else then this is the place. read more

I am not one to voice negativity about a place, but I feel I have to write this due to the unfortunate last experience I had. I played this course many a time over the past few decades, and although the course was never really in the best of shape, I enjoyed the layout, the challenge, the relaxing nature and wildlife, along with fair pricing. The clubhouse was adequate enough, and the overall experience checked enough boxes to warrant coming back. I took a break from golf for several years due to a back surgery to which I heard the management changed and things were "weird now." My buddy was telling me how you couldn't take the cart to the range, etc. I finally got back to seeing for myself and found it annoying that you had to walk your bag up to the carts in order to start. I was also told by one of the employees that if you had a bag or pack with you, the manager would check it? That definitely made me not want to return, but I did with some friends giving it the benefit of the doubt. I was able to get a 1:15 tee time, and upon arrival, the course was fairly empty. No one out before us or behind. Once again, they were guarding the cart situation, making you feel very uncomfortable right away. They told us at check-in that we had to be done by 4:30, and I raised my eyebrow like "okay"? We went to load up our gear, and they wouldn't give us the key to the cart until we were all there, loaded and ready to go. We had one friend that was late, but they were pushing us to go out sooner. We told our friend to play and catch up to us since the course was pretty much empty. With us standing on the box at hole 2, here comes our buddy being driven out to us vs them allowing him to get a cart and play up to us as a single. Why not give him his own cart, charge us for the full 18, and skip his first hole? Then force us to be done with a 4-hour round on a tough course in 3:15 minutes? It had our buddy thrown for a loop, but we played on. As we got to hole 12, the manager made it a point to ride out and remind us he was stopping play at 4:30. We all looked at each other, stating "wow, they are really serious about this," which then forced us to play "speed golf," trying to finish the round. At that point, all play and strategy went out the window as we were firing shots without pause and could no longer count the round for a proper handicap read. It was hilarious but frustrating at the same time, trying to beat the clock. We made it off the box on hole sixteen, to which the other employer rode out and cut across the middle of our play and said, "This is your last hole," forcing us to stop. We were looking at each other, seeing we easily had enough light to play our last two holes, but he was in the cart, almost stalking us to get off. Again, why sell us 18 holes and force us to play it in 3:15 minutes? We all felt jipped, forced/rushed, and almost stalked just to play golf. As we pulled up to return the cart, both that employer and manager ( I assume it was him) were standing in the middle of the road as if he had better places to be and creating such an uncomfortable feeling. It is very unfortunate to write this review as the course has lots of potential. The new management, rule changes, and style of running the business, with it being pushed on to other employees, will unfortunately keep us from returning or recommending anyone to visit unless there are some modifications. The upkeep wouldn't hurt, but again, I've played this course in worse conditions and was okay with it because of the challenge and grind it was known for and wasn't treated in such a manner that made you feel uncomfortable right from the jump. Just unfortunate is all. read more

Me and a few friends, all pretty average golfers, decided to switch things up and try Hells Point instead of our usual course. We had heard some bad things about the owners, but we figured we'd give it a chance anyway. We booked our tee time days in advance for 1 PM, but when we showed up, they had changed it and only told us when we got there. That was frustrating, but we decided to hang out at the practice area while we waited. They had a putting green, but no chipping allowed. There was actually a sign that said "no chipping," which felt strange for a full course. When it was finally time to head out, things got more annoying. There were six of us in pairs, so three carts. Pretty normal setup. But they made us split up and refused to hand over the keys until the clock hit our exact tee time. One of the workers said that was just how the owner wanted it. We finally got going and to be honest, the front nine was fun. The course had issues though. It had clearly rained earlier that week, and most of the bunkers were full of water. The greens were really fast too, which made things tricky. Then came hole nine. That's where everything went sideways. The owner, who we had heard stories about, was sitting on the cart path right where I needed to chip. He spent the next 20 minutes giving us a hard time. He said he had been watching us and that we didn't split up properly. We actually had, and we even let a scratch golfer play through to keep the pace moving. We were respectful and weren't holding anyone up. Then he complained about carts on the fairway. We followed the 90-degree rule and avoided the fairway almost the entire time. The one time we didn't, it was because the rope barriers were set up in a way that made it nearly impossible. We did our best to avoid any damage, but he still scolded us like we were tearing up the place. He told us to finish the ninth hole and leave. At that point, we were just glad we hadn't paid for all 18. He also said we were being put on a "watchlist," whatever that means. Even one of the workers, who we think was his grandson, didn't seem to like the owner much. Honestly, it felt like the guy just doesn't want people having fun. Golf is supposed to be enjoyable and relaxing. That wasn't the case here. We're not going back, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else. It's just not worth the hassle. read more

I purchased my boyfriend a membership here last year for his birthday present and he loved it! This is not the fanciest or the most well-maintained golf course in the area - but it is pretty and quiet and chill. It's the "local's course" for those who live in Lago Mar and on Sandbridge road and most of the people know one another. There is a driving/practice range, and there are golf carts available for $20, it's a full 18-hole course and goes deep into the Back Bay area so it tends to flood when it rains a lot and gets boggy and muddy - because of this the greens are not as pristine as other courses and are not in as good of shape. It's basically in swampland. There are also a lot of wild animals who roam around - like goats, deer, geese, etc. who you'll see on the course. My boyfriend always texted me photos of them while he was playing. The employees are friendly and helpful and they have a small pro shop, a cafe open in warmer months with outdoor patio seating, and have members tournaments every year. If you want to have a good time but are OK with it not being the nicest and fanciest course you'll ever play, it's a good place to come in the AM if you live nearby and play a quick 18 holes. read more

8 of us from out of town on vacation looking to play a round while visiting Va Beach. Not many available tee times when we looked the prior day except for Hells point. Now I understand why. We got there and the starter wouldn't give us the cart keys until it was exact tee time. Checked our coolers for alcoholic beverages, mind you no drink cart on course all day and no water jugs on a hot humid day. Came time to tee off and the starter told us 90 degree rule in effect and to follow cart signs. To our surprise after being told that, the course was in horrible condition. You were hitting off sand/dirt in most of the tee boxes, the fairways were full of overgrown weeds, the rough was rough, looked liked it hasn't been cut in weeks, the sand traps were swampy mud and the greens were terrible. Not sure why they said 90 degrees with carts, the course wasn't even wet. I'd feel awful charging $63 per golfer to play with the course in the condition it was in. My buddies and I come down every year to Va Beach. We will be sure to never play this course in the future. You can do better Hells Point of you put some effort into the course. read more

Course is in decent shape some of the tee boxes could you some love. I enjoyed my time playing 9 on vacation.

This is a generous 3 star rating. I don't want to bash the course because I didn't have an overall bad experience. However, if you're a semi to serious golfer this is not the course for you. The greens and tees are unkept, hardly mowed, and look terrible. The service was good and the BLT was delicious at the turn. It only cost $29 for 18 and a cart so I guess you get what you pay for. Also, the layout is well designed. Had this course been maintained, it would be a destination type place... read more

This course used to be a favorite of mine. It's gone down over the years and after my most recent experience I won't be going back. They've implemented a silly rule where you can't take your cart to your car to load your bag, nor can you take the cart to the driving range. The tee boxes were in terrible condition and the rest of the course condition is just average, at best. Because of the price, poor tee boxes, and silly cart rule, I won't be going back. read more

I love this place. It's not fancy it's not in the greatest condition, it gets soggy but still membership is $99 a year when you can play for $20 with a cart. The staff is awesome and I usually get to play at 6:30 in the morning by myself and finish in 2 1/2 hours. It's well laid out, and fun to play. You will lose a lot of balls if you don't hit it straight but can find more if you trek into the woods. Membership was given by a friend and I have chosen to renew it this year because it's a great place if you love to play but don't need fancy. read more

We spent 4 days in Virginia beach and the weather was uncharacteristically bad, so we waited till our last day to golf. We pulled in around 10am and were the first ones there. The weather didn't look promising, but we had a coupon for free green fees , so we decided to chance it. We just had to pay the cart fees. The guy running the counter was fine, but the guy responsible for the carts gave us a hard time. He kept saying "Rain all day!" Clearly he didn't want to get a cart out for us. He finally did get a cart out, but not without incident. He set off the building alarm and it took him 20 minutes to get it turned off while we listened to the noise. When he finally did get us a cart he parked it out front in the main lot. The next problem was all the gates to get on the course were locked and we couldnt' drive through them. Back in the shop to get the guy who unlock the gate! Once that was out of they way, we were the only ones on the course so we had a good time. The course was in decent shape. Some of the tees are rough, but the course was pretty good considering the amount of rain. We did see several deer and when I went to look for my ball on #4 it was next to a 4ft long Water Moccasin snake. I left it where it was. Later I went to remove some mud from my ball and turns out the mud was a huge tick! Also saw mountain line tracks in one sound trap. Quite an adventure we had. Nice play, just didn't like the guy running the carts. read more

Let me explain and please hang in there... THE OWNERS VERBALLY ASSAULTED ME OFF THE 15TH TEE. I am an EXTREME beginner golfer, my friend is in town and we are trying new courses. 1 for him, but 2 so I can find a good course to learn and practice on. This is my second local course. Again, extreme beginner. The course is having aeration done and many holes are closed, but you can loop around twice for 18. The paths are really bumpy but understandable considering the amount of trees. Off season of course the course is a bit mushy with rain and not very green, expected for our climate. While working our way through the course we had a woman approach us making sure we skipped ahead from there to 17 and 18. All I hear was just that. Apparently I had not heard the instruction to short cut to 17 from 11, so we took the path along all the holes. At 15 we got turned around and were turning around when the same woman approached us. Not so much approached, but flying in friggin' HAWT!!! She pulled up, blocking our cart to the side, and immediately jumped out with a raised voice because I had missed the instruction. Instead of providing us with proper instructions on how to proceed to 17 we were called liars, had flying fingers in our faces, and screams directly in our faces. Then along comes another person to get involved in an already heated situation. I was literally left crying. This is BEYOND ME!! Not only is this poor human decorum but to find out upon arrival at the clubhouse that THESE WERE THE OWNERS!!!!!! So to repeat. I am a beginner golfer on a course with variations to the hole progression. I get lost. My friend is not from here, also a first timer here at this course, gets lost. Instead of pleasantly guiding us to the correct path and tee, you screamed, told me to shut up, called me a liar, leaving me in tears and then followed us half way off the course. As a beginner golfer, this was frightening and not how you want to enter the world of what should be a relaxing experience and way to spend your time. Way to go owners. You should be absolutely ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES!!! read more

Asian owners have 1000 rules but goats on the course. Not child friendly and owners will follow you around. They wont stop talking.

This is by far the worst golf course I have ever played. I have been playing golf for a while now and the course condition is by far the worst in the city of Virginia Beach, maybe even the state of Virginia. If there was a course to epitomize the term "goat track" this would be it. Literally saw about 10-15 goats on the 2nd hole and every tee box was practically sand. There is no effort to maintaining the course condition whatsoever as I lost a ball in nearly every "rough" I happened to hit. The reason I put rough in quotes in the sentence prior is because the fairway might as well be considered the rough as well. You are destined to lose 10-15 balls if you don't hit the absolute center of the fairway so save your pro v's and grab your noodles. Save your money and go to top golf. read more

This is the WORST experience I've ever had at a golf course. I'm a female collegiate golfer and I'm here for a mission trip so I needed a place to practice. When I went the first time one of the employees said he was "surprised to see a women carrying her own golf bag" and proceeded to act like they'd never seen a women play golf before. I went this morning to play 9 holes. They don't offer 9 hole rates and said I could pay for 18 and just get a rain check for the other 9 later this week. The man behind the counter told me I could pay for the 18 holes when I came back later this week so I started to play. On hole two another employee came out and told me that the owner said I needed to pay for the 18 holes now and that he needed my credit card. I told him I wasn't comfortable with a bunch of strangers taking my credit card and he said they would just hold it up front. 5 minutes later my card was charged for the entire 18 holes. He came back out with my card and told me I had to pay for 18 no matter how many holes I played. I said that they didn't inform me of that before so started and I only had time to play 9. He told me to just come back and talk to the owner. So after 3 holes I came back to the pro shop. The owner started treating me like a criminal and like I had purposely tried to play for free, when I told him what his employee told me the employee started to lie and say he never said any of that. Then they all started raising their voices at me (a 20 year old girl) and telling me no matter how much I played I will have to pay the full amount. They were so harsh I literally started crying in the pro shop and then they finally agreed to give me a refund. This is the worst experience I've ever had and this place is truly HELL. read more

If I could give this place less then 1 star I would. The management specifically had the audacity to challenge my family's integrity. This is on the 4th of a July these incidents happened. We have abided by all the rules. Played every hole, let people pass when we were taking too long and had some great times with fellow golfers. But when it came to the management or owners I am very disgusted. My family has paid over $250 to play. We have gotten drinks, food, etc. at this golf course. First they had an issue with us using the restroom. That's what really set off the entire harassment issue. Then it was having four carts (even though only 4 people were playing) which is in the rules. Then it was the wife of the owner/manager who stalked us and followed us around holes 12-14 to make sure we were "abiding" by the rules. As soon as she saw us see her she would turn around. We had to give our receipt to one of the golf club men to go show their manager. Then we had to have my sister and brother in law go in to talk to the manager. Let's make one thing very clear, we did not do anything wrong and they simply were harassing our group. I am disgusted. Attached are pictures of the wife "checking" up on us through the back 9 holes. As an Asian American I have never ever been mistreated and disrespected like this by fellow Asian people in my entire life. I am completely and utterly appalled by this behavior. read more

Course was in pretty good shape for winter golf (Nov 29th). The Bermuda was dormant and lacked the structure it has in the summer. That combined with a little rain the day before led to some spongy conditions. Swallowed a few balls that wouldn't be lost in the summer. The layout is great, with challenging holes. Most are fairly tight with lots of water on the back 9. The staff was courteous and helpful. read more

The name is fitting...hell. The only reason why I played was because of my buddy's tournament. I dredge going to the course especially after it drizzles or when people spit because the ground gets all mushy and the bugs are crap to deal with. I will say the course was actually in decent condition for being a golf course that struggles with its condition. I still can't get over the fact that it's like going to a swamp. They have a decent layout and is a good track for golfers of all skill levels. My team won the tournament and received gift cards to spend in the pro shop. After walking around and finding nothing that caught my eye I settled on four pairs of socks. Woopty do. read more

Played here a month ago when I purchased a deal on GolfNow since regularly the are very expensive ($60-65) a round so for that price I expect the green to be in very good shape, not the case. The fairways are 2nd best to Heron Ridge or Riverfront course that are worth $60 plus dollars. The course is not hard and the layout is very good. I read other reviews complaining about bugs but C'mon Man what do you expect from a course with lots of water in a Semi-Swapped area. The clubhouse is a dump and the grown keepers shouldn't be cutting the grass while I'm trying to tee off. Had a great time playing a round with my teenage son and his friends. Tee boxes, fairways, rough and bunkers were in great shape and even some of the greens. Tons of bad weather rolled through recently so some of the greens weren't doing so well but didn't change our opinion of the place. We went off in the afternoon and had the course to ourselves. Such a beautiful course and really challenging. Folks in the club house we're so nice. Loved it. read more

The greens are great at this time... the rough is brutal, you're not supposed to be there anyway, fairways are thin at this time (December, not unusual), sand traps could use attention but very playable, the staff is courteous and friendly, ground crew is friendly, the layout of this course is beautiful, wildlife is a plus.. deer, wild turkeys, bald eagles, ospreys, water moccasins, turtles, big foot, goats, occasional bear, (hungry ones), mosquitoes the size of hummingbirds, blue birds, yellow birds, ducks, geese, woody the woodpecker, blue herons, great egrets, pterosaurs, etc...the most important thing besides the experience of the golf game and the ball in flight which brings dim memories of our ancestral past and premonitions of the next manifesting plane is THE BEER IS COLD.... Recommend this course, but don't expect a Royal Experience.. just a great time..remember that "Golf is for smellin' the Goats and cut grass and walkin' fast across the countryside and feelin' the wind and watchin' the sun come up and seein' your friends hit good shots and hittin' some yerself. A Semi Private club with great deals for locals availible (VA Beach residents). Also good military discounts as well. Fairways are a MUST hit as there's a lot of water (every hole on back 9) and other challenging hazards. Fairways and Rough were in GREAT shape, but the greens are some of the worst I've ever played on. Excessive ball marks and burnt spots show that either the regulars don't care or don't know the respect they should show the course. Clubhouse stated that there was a fungus that they are trying to recover from, but seemed that a lot of the damage was preventable. I hope that next time I play it'll be a little better shape. Otherwise, GREAT customer service and our "beer cart" server was awesome. Not busy at all, so it'd be a good place to learn but the difficulty of the holes would frustrate even the 20-30 handicap. read more

Don't bother, there are many better courses in the area. They pulled a bait and switch the day we played. We made reservations weeks in advance and they knew they would be aerating the front nine when we planned on playing. That was not something they shared with us and even when we arrived to play that day. When we showed up to play and had paid full price they didn't even tell us about the aeration. It was not until the starter mentioned it that we were told we would be playing the back nine twice. Feel cheated! read more

Visited here on a Monday afternoon while on a short trip. I'm a casual golfer and borrowed a friends clubs just to play. Found a deal on golf now for my Friend and I for 35$. That's the best deal I've ever had so that alone makes this course worth it to me. The course: as I said I golf casually so i only Really play a handful of courses mostly in New York. Needless to say the course is beautiful and long enough your not on top of the other golfers. The greens were perfect but the rest of the course could use some love. Also it's mid April so that may have something to do with it. Clubhouse: Ehh I don't really care about this stuff I used the bathroom and it was clean but old. Didn't get food at the course and never saw a drink cart. Staff were a little aggravated with my attire not being a walking ping billboard but I shmoozed them and they let us play. Bottom line i would go back of that deal was available again. We pay 3x that in ny so deffinitly a deal. read more

First time playing here, chose because of location. Very picturesque course. Overall in pretty good shape but lacked proper drainage in a few areas which resulted in a couple muddy areas (yes, there was some recent rain). A couple bunkers needed some maintenance/drainage but my fault for hitting them. Clear directions posted for each hole was nice for the first time visitor and a course detail book was provided in each cart. Nice. Pace of play was good with a course ranger visible/available throughout the round. Beverage cart made a few rounds by us and the breakfast sandwiches we ordered at the turn were awesome. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. Once again, location was the key for playing here, and would play here again because of the course challenge. However, for a first time visitor to the area, or for the less experienced golfer, I would probably chose Heron Ridge before this one. read more

I wish I could gave given this 0 stars. I can't stress this point enough STAY AWAY!!!! The people who work here are terrible. They stole my $60, pushed us off the first hole because they said we were playing slow. There was a group in front of us that we waited 10 minutes for but we got blamed. I am a golfer who hits in the 80s so while not great I for sure do not hold people up. In fact we even let the guy in front of us join us to save time. When we got back to the club house the employee approached us and told us we were not good enough and to leave. We did not get a refund. The course is in bad condition too. Best greens in the area rivaling the privates and has the potential to be the most exclusive track in town. If pure golf is what your after then this is the place. Good course, great design. Fairways are nice but greens need some work. Overall good course though.

I am a Retired Federal Canadian Correctional Officer and I have been going to Virginia Beach for a 7 day vacation ( 5 of them Golfing ) for 3 years and this year my 4th year I went for a 14 day Vacation. (8 of them Golfing) . The Price was Great 8 rounds for 200$ cart and taxes included plus I was received with respect , honor and a smile. I give you this, This year I played 6 times on wet fairways with alot of water filled sand traps and twice on dry Fairways and traps, the Greens were always very good., I do have one hitch with this year and that would be the amount of people that were there to play which was few, BUT the upside was that I got to play two BALL rounds and was NOT rushed nor stalled. I also got to meet with the Grounds Masscot with the ORANGE collar. We plan to go there again in 2015 Thanks again for a good time Have a Merry Christmas and may the Lord Bless you this New Year read more
