I had the Marjorie for my drink which was tasty light and fruity which is what I like. My guy has a whiskey sour and couldn't go wrong. Desi was the waitress that night, she was phenomenal! Walking in, the vibe at Hello Marjorie made you feel right at ease and ready to relax with friends. The waitress brought us a "Libations" menu that consisted of their seasonal cocktails as well as a menu with their other beers, liquors and wines. I would absolutely recommend getting a "Libation." They are masterfully crafted and so fun! I had the Marjorie and it was absolutely delicious. The details were not unnoticed, from the bartenders crushing ice by hand to the beautiful garnishes, it was all intricately crafted. My friend had the Daydream, which was also delicious, I was able to taste it, and her boyfriend had the shadow-boxer. BEWARE THE SHADOWBOXER. It was probably the strongest drink any of us had ever encountered. Very interesting, but had a punch!!! If you're looking for something sweet and easy to sip, grab a Marjorie. I was back visiting my home state when a friend suggested we meet up here at Hello, Marjorie. The decor was such a flash back to the 70s or 80s which brought back childhood memories. You know those bucket swivels chairs you might have had at your kitchen table. They have them. I was waiting for someone to break out the bell bottom jeans. Come to think of it, I do believe the staff wore period clothing. Besides the great atmosphere, the drinks were even more spectacular. I had the Marjorie which was sweet but not too sweet topped off with a sprig of thyme. The staff was accommodating with explaining the drinks and their differences. Go through the revolving doors into an office building like hallway and you will see some doors on the right with a logo. Cool mixology in addition to good beer and wine. Our server was fantastic- she had good advice on drinks and was very friendly. I ended up trying the break room, which had a strong cinnamon taste, and the purple scooter. Stopped in on a Tuesday after work I had been wanting to try this place out for awhile. When we walked in there was a podium to wait to be seated. When the server approached we were greeted and she had a weird look on her face like why and what are you doing here. This set the tone for the rest of our experience. She quickly asked to see our ID's, I'm 40 and was dressed in a business suit but okay we provided the ID's. A group of 4 white women came in while we were seated and none were asked to provide an ID. A young white male came in that was asked to provide an ID which made sense he presented as if he could be of college age. What was weird was the server/hostess looking directly at me when she asked for his ID as if she wanted me to know she asks for everyones ID, although she clearly did not ask for everyone's ID. We were then seated, given menus and told the happy hour specials which included martinis but there were no martinis on the menus that we were given. I never felt welcome which sucks because I was excited to try this place and looked forward to returning. The drink I had was really delicious and I tried my cousins drink which had chili bitters and it was really good as well. I would have ordered another drink but we left and tried another spot where we weren't made to feel unwelcome. They do have a nice atmosphere with fabulous unique drinks so I do recommend giving it a try maybe your experience will be better. read more

Since I have been living in DSM (over 6 years now), I have wanted the city to offer a classy lounge with good drinks and house music; somewhere that made me feel like I was closer to the big South American city from where I come. Hello, Marjorie is the answer. The atmosphere is on point: 50s/60s chic, eclectic and sophisticated. I adore the neon signs and the lighting, and as you walk in, the place is all abuzz with conversation and house/chill house music (that isn't too loud). The crowd is hip and happening, not really the debauched Court Avenue type, which is fantastic, as I'm gladly past the stage of shots of cheap booze and random grinding to top 40 hits. I had the prosecco, very reasonably priced and just at the perfect point between sweet and dry. They serve it in coupes, not flutes, which is a charming touch. The cocktail selection featured inventive choices with classic ingredients, as well as a varied selection of craft and international beers. My friend and I also had the cheese plate with crackers and buttery marcona almonds. I think they also have a snack mix available. An enjoyable experience, courteous and prompt service, and a great vibe. An instant favorite in my book! read more

I love this place, it's the bottom floor of the old Des Moines Register which is now RT Lofts. You can't but love the aesthetics of the place. It's like you've walked into The Great Gatsby era but a little less of the money and glam. I like the name of the drinks it's clever cute and at times try a little too hard to be clever (nothing wrong with that...) My first drink was Weekend at Harry's and I'll be honest, I didn't like it which the bartender had no problems with making me a different drink with no charge. I appreciate that, just because I didn't enjoy something doesn't mean you will too, do you. There's also beer here that taps out from what looks like cabinets. Cool! I was with only one other person trying to enter the bar and was met with a hostile hostess. I never even made it more than two feet in the door before turning around. I understand when you are at capacity you can't seat people and it's annoying to have to say it over and over again but your current ways of handling the situation is lazy/rude at best. read more

Definitely not your typical midwest bar and far more classier than most. I may sound arrogant but I cant help but laugh at some of the reviews on Google that complained this place is expensive. First of all you are lucky to have no cover fee which many busy, more upscale bars in larger cities have. Also the most expensive cocktail you will find on their menus range from 9$ to 12$. You get what you pay for. Businesses need to make money too believe it or not. You can not expect a place to serve cocktails with ingredients like ginger and fruit coupled with decent quality alchohals and be 5 bucks. If you have ever ventured outside of Iowa, you will also be aware that this is quite reasonable for a cocktail. The bar owners were quite smart with how they set the place up. If it is busy, you will have to sit at tables or couches that may already have other occupants there. This kind of forces even they most shy of us to mingle and make new friends for the evening. The decor is pretty cool..looks like you're in a giant 70's living room. The servers seem to be pretty personable with the locals and have obviously gotten to know the regulars. I also love the crowd that comes here. People dress nice and it's a pretty friendly, what you would call..."hipster" type crowd. Only suggestion is hiring more waiters. It took awhile for us to get our first drink order in. Place seems pretty understaffed. Other than that I loved it. We will be back. read more

Nicely designed place, cool cocktails but really loud. They don't have anything to absorb the sound so it just bounces off of the walls. And when it's busy during happy hour you can't hear the person next to you without them shouting. I am getting old but I'm not that old. I went in for happy hour. The place was packed. The service as a little low, probably because they weren't expecting a large crowd that quickly and didn't have the staff. But as the night went on the service got a lot faster and better. I ordered an Editor's Note, Bourbon, apricot liqueur, smoked apple bitters, syrup with a dried apricot and apple as garnish, it was smooth and sweet. A well balanced cocktail to start the night. The second cocktail I ordered was the Register & Tribune. This had Scotch, sloe gin, lemon, sugar, house bitters and an overpowering absinthe rinse. As you can tell they went a little heavy on the rinse. This cocktail was more on the sweeter side for me. You couldn't really taste the scotch in the cocktail but you will feel it. It hits hard. The friends that I was with got just about everything else on the menu. They liked what they had but when they got a second drink, each of them said it tasted different from the first. That they didn't have consistency from one drink to the next. I chalk that up to being a relatively new spot. Overall this place is worth a visit that is if you can stand loud places.
