Lagkagehuset is a renowned bakery and café located in the heart of Copenhagen, celebrated for its…read moreexquisite menu of pastries, breads, and beverages. Now, where did the name originate? "The name comes from the appearance of the first bakery, which was a square building with alternating cream-colored layers resembling a layer cake." This bakery also serves breakfast items, brod (open face )sandwich and coffees. Here is a sample of pastry offerings in Danish: Wienerbrød: The general term for what English speakers call "Danish pastries". Kanelsnegl: A cinnamon roll. Spandauer: A pastry typically filled with jam or custard. Frøsnapper: A pastry sprinkled with seeds. Tebirkes: A poppy seed pastry. There are numerous locations for this bakery. I visited the location in main hall of Kobenhaven K or Central Station before catching my train to Kronborg Castle. The space was filled with people who were grabbing a ticket and then wait for ticket number to be called. I was indecisive and thought I saw a pastry with lemon filling. The employee who seemed a bit flustered told me that it was not lemon and she did not have anything with lemon. It turned out to be vanilla custard which was just as good. I also tried the green sprinkled marshmallow ball. She placed my two items in their own bag. I wanted a shopping bag which she snidely says "It cost 5 krone". Unfortunately, my New York response was snide as well, "I don't care". The two pastries were delicious. However, service needs to be as exquisite as the items you sell, unfortunately this location is lacking in that. There is another, smaller located downstairs from concourse whose employees are sweeter. Nok sagt or enough said.

Most of the baked goods were sold, so asked the attendant what popular item I should get. Probably wasn't a great question since most of the items were gone, but suggested a Danish with almond filling covered in chocolate ( Gammeldags Julebolle) for $4.89 (converted). Brought it back to my hotel to consume. I thought it was OK, very dense and definitely one would fill you up (couldn't finish it). Much prefer an almond croissant.

I was curious but hesitant since we were already in a rush. The group I was with encouraged me to go treat myself. Best. Impulse stop. EVER. Hotel Chocolat is a British chain of cocoa bar-cafés with locations all over the UK as well as in Denmark (here in Copenhagen), Japan, Hong Kong, and New York. And it does seem like they have different TYPES of locations? But modern, high-end feeling chocolate shop in the front and café in the back. It's set up with a clean design that's very photogenic/Instgramable. They have a variation of chocolates made from cacao beans from Ecuador to Indonesia and a café that serves all kinds of mostly chocolate-y drinks and desserts. And for all the jokes about me being obsessed with chocolate, everyone was pretty involved in browsing through this store. I got the "Ice Cream of the Gods", which is a very soft serve in a cone and the option for either a chocolate or a salted caramel drizzle. And it's so GOOD. Even my dad, who was skeptical about spending money on something so simple, said it was worth it after having a taste. Translated from Chinese, the consensus was that it you could really taste the milk, which made it sweetly rich rather than richly sweet. We also happened to be there between the times they were switching out samples, so we got to try the Billionaire Shortbread Chocolate Selector (caramel, cookies, and hazelnut) and a dark chocolate bit that I didn't get the name of. In hindsight, I deeply regret that I didn't get the Billionaire Sundae, a dessert based on their Billionaire Shortbread Chocolate Selector truffle. Overall, super nice and really wish we could have hung around longer, even sit down and try out more menu items. If nothing else, drop in for a free sample, but just from what I tasted, I'd say it's worth it to make this a short stop. It's definitely on my list for the next time I'm back in Copenhagen or even London. That ice cream just made me really happy...

We bought some small samples and everybody ordered an ice cream. I would normally just take a few bites out of my wife's cone because I get nauseous after about half a cone. It's just too sweet and rich. But, she insisted on no sharing this time because she wanted the whole thing to herself. So, she ordered a rather large cone for me alone. They were right. It was not super sugary like other ice cream. The lady behind the counter said the only sugar came from the milk itself. I finished the whole cone without feeling like I'd just had a tub of butter/cream. We were only in town for a week, but managed to come back to this place for seconds. And I had another cone to myself.

So when National Geographic named the Top 10 places in the world to eat ice cream, Vaffelbageriet…read moreactually ranked #9. I didn't realize I was patronizing the ninth best ice cream parlor in the world when I took a sweet-tooth respite during my leisurely evening stroll in the world-famous Tivoli Gardens last September. In fact, I didn't know the place had a name, but I just saw a herd of toddlers with over-sized cones and followed the drip marks on the pavement. Those led me to a very festive-looking pavilion with a welcoming counter chock full of sweet treats not the least of which was ice cream. Apparently, the name of the place is Danish for ice cream served in large waffle cones, which no surprise, is their house specialty. Their most popular item is the Amerikaner, a decadent-looking mountain of ice cream in a waffle cone, four scoops worth ladled with some syrupy, only-in-Europe topping, dollops of whipped cream, and a chocolate-covered meringue puff rather than the expected maraschino cherry. It doesn't look like anything I've seen in the states, but it's called the Amerikaner because it's the picture of unhealthy excess, I'm guessing. What a reputation we have across the pond. I refuse to live down to my stereotype and went for a good old-fashioned vanilla soft-serve waffle cone covered in chocolate sprinkles, large of course (see photo). Sure, it was still decadent but at 30 DKK (Danish krone) or $5.32, it was a relative bargain. And frankly, it was one of the creamiest cones I've ever had, which of course, means it's still sitting in my thighs all these months later. No matter since it hit the spot, and for Pete's sake, or I guess I should say for Per's sake, it was Tivoli, and you're supposed to have carnival food. So stop judging me. Anyway, I don't know if Vaffelbageriet is truly the ninth best ice cream in the world, but who's complaining? ICE CREAM - 4 stars...creamy excess that may give you a diabetic coma AMBIANCE - 4 stars...cute spot with plenty of seats if you need recovery time from the Star Flyer SERVICE - 4 stars...very friendly servers keep you in a good mood here TOTAL - 4 stars...big globs of ice cream in a warm, freshly baked waffle cone in the middle of Tivoli Gardens...I can dig it

Kind of reminds me of a knotts berry farm and one of our L.A. fairs kind of mashed together. When we visited this small desert cafe my wife and I got a waffle with nutella, cream and 2 scoops of ice cream. The waffle was nice and crispy and the addition of the nutella, cream and ice cream made it just about complete. We enjoyed it so much that we ended up coming back towards the end and ordering another! Have fun everyone!
