We walked from Gabler Bräu, a restaurant in Old City Salzburg, to the Hellbrunner Adventzauber and back. That's 5.2 km one way. It was cold and raining, and we really didn't think much about making that walk, since we tend to walk a ton on our vacations.
But still. It was 5.2 km! What were we thinking?
I mean, yes - we saw some pretty fantastic things on our way. I got to walk on the Allee that Julie Andrews (as Fraulein Maria) walked after getting off the bus, on her way to the Von Trapp family manse. We passed by the house that served as the front exterior for said house. We saw some jaw-droppingly beautiful homes, meadows, paths and farms. But - 5.2 km! Which is only 3-ish miles one way, but it seemed longer and more difficult in the cold wind and rain.
At any rate, we headed to Adventzauber because we knew it only had a couple more days before closing for the year, and it was highly recommended by one of my Austrian colleagues.
The grounds definitely made the trek worth it. Once we got through the gates we saw the first of the market stalls. Beyond those stalls, the courtyard was decked out with trees, more stalls, tables, and the windows of the palace were converted into a large Advent Calendar. Lovely!
We took our time meandering through the many different areas of the palace grounds. Beyond the courtyard, one exit took us to a small lake, where they were setting up a large angel for the evening. Another exit took us to a creek, resplendent with holiday decorations.
Following that path around, we came upon a petting zoo, a (far too sussed out) collection of Krampus dioramas, and another part of the market.
There definitely was plenty to see and do on the palace grounds, but we did miss a couple of things. The trick fountains weren't working that day (not sure if it was shut down for the season, or just that day because of the weather), and I spaced on the recreation of the "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" gazebo that lives on the grounds. But, I didn't mind so much.
Despite the cold and rain, we enjoyed ourselves, warming up with a couple (oh-KAY, *many*) glasses of glühmost while we stopped to appreciate everything around us. I'm sure the grounds are even more impressive in better weather, but I was incredibly enthralled by the holiday decorations! I'd love to visit again, in a different season. read more
