Saying "I loved this market" would be a vast understatement. We visited the market every day during our five-day stay - sometimes twice - and never tired of the stalls, offerings, views and aromas.
Yes, it got crowded, even in the rain and cold. We were there right before, during and after Christmas, after all. It was expected, so it wasn't a surprise. Despite the number of people, we never felt crushed, or like we couldn't move through the crowd.
We purchased many items from various stalls throughout our visits, buying everything from gloves (we were wildly unprepared for the cold weather), sweets, ornaments, savories and alcohol. LOTS of alcohol, in many different forms!
Everyone we stopped to talk with at the stalls and just randomly walking around were friendly and open, which made me want to spend even more time there.
We sampled schnapps - the "true" kind of schnapps, not that overly-sweet crap you typically see in the States. We got our first taste of Glühbier - just because we could - it wasn't my favorite, but we crossed it off the list. We sampled currywurst and baked potatoes smothered in the best garlic cream sauce ever, then capped it off with Glühwein and Topfenstrudel.
We wandered, we marveled, we took pictures, we ate and drank, and then we turned around and did it all over again. I loved the feel of this market - vast as it was, it still managed to feel cozy. And the fact that it's right outside the doors of Salzburg Cathedral (where we stopped to experience a bit of Christmas Mass) just made it that much better.
I'm sure my husband was on Christmas Market overload by that point, but even he was a bit sad walking through the square the day after the market shut down, seeing all the stalls being torn apart. These were a huge part of our December vacation, so seeing the stark reality of one of our favorites coming to an end was a message we weren't quite ready to receive. I am so glad we were able to visit! read more
