I was…read morea little disappointed in the gleuwine mugs but I was able to get a cute one while we were at the fortress. In general everyone spoke basic english, so communicating wasn't a problem. We had one of the best things (I think) which was a "donut" topped with cheese and garlic. The first few gleuwines we tried (don'tHodge me!!), weren't that special. They really just tasted like hot wine. I think the type of wine used makes a big difference. Before we left, we had a white gleuwine and it was FANTASTIC. All in all the people were friendly and the shops offered a pretty good variety of things to buy if you were shopping for gifts. We are really here mainly for the food, drink and atmosphere. This market for sure had all 3!! You should come check out out!!

The glühwein offerings were good; I was surprised at how good the mulled white wine was at Speck Willi ( stand no. 2). There was also wonderful food and drinks all around.

The view from the Observation Tower is spectacular, an alp or two is always good eye candy. We spend about 2 hours wandering around, through the museum and courtyard. Look through every window you find and you can see why this Fortress was impenetrable. Also have a go with the bells on way out and if you have time come back to the bell area at 11.00am to hear the original mechanism working. A final drink and snack in the restaurant will afford those great views once more. We arrived early with few people around. Yes there are a lot of steps but they are well designed and shallow. The way down from the tower is separate to the way up so you don't get blockages. The rest rooms are fantastic just at the end of the Museum.

Some of the major highlights of Fortress Hohensalzburg are the magnificent Princes' Rooms, the Magic Theater on the High Level, the Great Armory in the castle courtyard, the various museums (like the marionette museum, the tower and the historical museum) were all very interesting and detailed. Go up for the breathtaking views over the rooftops of the city. It was really interesting to learn how this fortress had evolved over a period of almost 500 years. If you want to do all, it would take 3-5 hours...it's huge.....

Going inside you get to take the…read morebeautiful Angel Staircase up to the famous Marble Hall, which is where the concert takes place. I saw a wonderful Mozart concert here with strings and a visiting French Horn player who was fantastic. It's not a huge room and it's nicely intimate inside; the interior is clad with white marble and is gorgeous. I went in March and was able to get a ticket on the same day but I think in summer it must sell out. They have a coat check and a bar that you can visit before the concert and during intermission. Don't come too hungry though, because I only saw MozartKugel on sale for snacks the night that I attended a concert. Check on their website a couple days in advance if you can. It's really worth seeing a concert here plus you get to visit the famous Angel Staircase and Marble Hall, which are must sees if you're visiting Salzburg.

Several important scenes in the world-famous movie "The Sound of Music" were shot in the Mirabell Gardens. Maria - played by Julie Andrews - and the seven children danced around the Pegasus Fountain while singing the song "Do Re Mi". The Mirabell Palace and Mirabell Gardens are one of the most important sights of Salzburg. The complex is under monument protection and was declared a world heritage site by the UNESCO. Just enjoy walking around the flowers, trees, statues and gardens...you will love it....

This is an interesting museum in the old town of Salzburg. It's where Mozart was born on January…read more27, 1756. Very popular so try to go early morning or on a weekday if you can. It's open daily from 9 am to 5:30 pm. The latest admission is 30 minutes before closing time. Touring the museum is said to take about an hour, but I ran through it in about 25 minutes There is a text guide you can read on your mobile phone using a QR code. A tip: this museum is FREE if you have the Salzburg card. I got a 2 day card and I found it to be a great value, especially if you want to see the castle, use the bus, and even just see two other museums. You can buy it online as well.
