So very disapointed this time Thanksgiving dinner, just the 2 of us and this looked like a great option. Put my order in beggining of the month, reached out 2 more times before I got a response back. Scheduled pick up time 3:00-3:15 , arrived at 3:00. Waited a hour and 25 minutes to get my pre-ordered dinner. I am not that great of a cook but I can do a basic turkey dinner, won't be fancy but will taste good. I could have done better. Not positive but pretty sure the green beans were canned. read more

Went to Helen's Kitchen today after coming back from checking out the new doggie park. It's a very small mom/pop restaurant looking at it from the outside. Looks like it's closed, but you'll know if it's open with the amount of cars you see outside the parking lot. The parking lot is a good size for the establishment but people were making their own parking spots. When we went into the restaurant, there was a sign that said "Please wait to be seated", we waited a couple of minutes because nobody was at the front directing us and then a waitress came out from the back and told us that we can seat ourselves wherever we wanted. There were 3 tables filled, but it wasn't busy even though it was around noontime. We received our menus and the wait begins. I have heard bad things about their service but I decided to give it another shot. We waited for 20 minutes for our food, it wasn't that bad but it definitely could be improved. We got our food but had to wait again because we didn't get any utensils. While waiting, I noticed that most of the condiments on each table were very low. For our table, we were out of ketchup and Tabasco sauce. I have never been to a restaurant where their condiments were low but I guess it's fine? because it's a mom/pop store and they probably didn't have time to fill them up. We ordered tri-tip sandwiches, eggs benedict, and chicken fried steak. They have breakfast and lunch menus that you can order from. Overall, the food was great, flavorful, and delicious. The eggs benedict was okay though, I've had better elsewhere but it's great that offer it on their menu. They also have homemade desserts. Although I didn't order any, I see a lot of people that did, so it must be delicious.. I've got to try it one day. This restaurant serves delicious and flavorful food but they have a lot that they can improve on though. Give it a shot, because the tri-tip sandwiches are delicious. read more

Staff is great and friendly they make the experience so much better for me. I order biscuits and gravy with eggs and bacon. Asked for the gravy on the side. Got a huge bowl of gravy. The gravy is kinda bland for my taste added pepper and salt helped some. The bacon was very crispy as most people like. I prefer chewy but I forgot to specify. Chocolate milk came in a huge glass. First time ever eating at Helen's this morning. Food was great, our waitress Nikki was wonderful, friendly, attentive, respectful. The only low point was the awful hostess. She asked my girlfriend and I to wait outside which is fine, they were busy. After 20 minutes of waiting we see another couple walk in and get seated right away (we were the only ones waiting). We walked in and saw several two seat tables open. I asked the hostess why the other couple was seated before us. She looks at me and said, I didn't think you'd want a two person table. So, I asked her why wouldn't we want a two person table? We're two people aren't we? She said she just assumed we wouldn't and walked away. Never once did we indicate a table preference. So basically, we waited 20 minutes for no reason. Soured the entire experience for us. read more

I'm a Sunday morning breakfast guy. I need the fuel of a quality breakfast to enjoy football or to pretend to do something productive when it's not football season. I was forced to hop around mediocre breakfast places in Maricopa to fulfill my weekly Sunday ritual. Then, a couple weeks ago, Helen's opened up just south of the tracks in a nondescript building that used to house a soul food restaurant. What I'm about to say I do not say lightly. I don't toss around praise to make people feel good. I'm cynical, I have high standards, and I'm extremely neurotic about food. That said, HELEN'S IS THE BEST BREAKFAST PLACE I'VE EVER EATEN AT! I've had enough variety to say that with conviction. Pancakes- Enormous and insanely fluffly. Bacon/Sausage- If you say you've had better, you're living a lie. Biscuits and Gravy- You think your mom does a good job on B&G, well your childhood is a sham and you haven't even begun to experience real life! Almond Poppy Seed Muffins- Criminal. Simple freaking criminal how good they are. Tri-Tip and Eggs- Quit making memories because this is the only memory you need in life! The staff is friendly and quirky. Granted a little new at the position, but they're very enjoyable. Hell, if this food was served by a robot that was programmed to stab customers, I would still give this place 5 stars. You can catch me there every Sunday morning bright and early, and if you see me, make sure to make eye contact with me when you try the food. Okay so I about 9 mos ago I posted a 5 star review and its changed. I use to come here a lot but the last three times I've come, it's been a Real Big Dissapointment. First: We walk in to get seated. No one said hello and smiled. Both girls running around looked at us and said we will be with you in a second. Still no smile. More like a 'ugh why are you here?' look. Whole time we were there..... They picked and chose who they want to smile and converse with. Not once did my server smile at me. The other girl ran around like she had something stuck up her butt. Second: I ordered coffee and the server was taking orders when I opened my half and half. I was stunned and gross out from the stench that came out, it was sour milk. I slowly pushed it away and informed her incase it wasn't obvious with my yuck face and covering my nose. She didn't apologize for it. Just still got the 'why are you here' look. She did replace it. Third: Cook was playing music way too loud. It echoed in dining area. You add that on top of people talking in that room... It was hard to hold a conversation with people at your table without straining to hear them and repeating yourself. Last: The other waitress started putting chairs up on top of tables to close up shop. First off, You don't need to flip things up from floor onto my food or table. Second, it's rude. There where still five tables with families eating there. Don't start closing up like that when people are still dining. It's like your rushing us out. read more

Something about waiting an hour and fifteen minutes for your food really turns you off from it. It was pretty ok food too, as far as breakfast goes, but it was insane...how long does it take to cook an omelette? And there was this creepy guy alone at the table next to us telling us "You're gonna love this food, best you ever had!" and then we heard him tell the waitress he had never eaten there. Wouldn't leave us alone (that's not the restaurant's fault). Got a few tri-tip sandwiches to go, thinking it'd be great...$45 later. No thanks. When a relatively small city like Maricopa gets a new restaurant, people are going to be talking a lot about the new dining options. In the months since Helen's opened I've heard lots of opinions...the general consensus was great food, hit-or-miss service, and "meh" decor. After breakfast with the family at 9am on a Sunday, I can say that the verdict on the food was spot on, the service was better than advertised, and the decor wasn't what I went there for in the first place (nothing fancy, but certainly more clean and bright than Headquarters). We walked in and were seated immediately. "Thing 1" ordered biscuits & gravy while "thing 2" had the mini pancakes kids meal. I tried to talk husband into ordering the tri-tip so I could steal a taste from his plate, but he went with the chicken fried steak & eggs. I had the veggie delight omelet and asked if it would be possible to try a sample of the tri-tip since I've heard such great reviews of it. Our server (Jake) started grinning and said absolutely! He proceeded to tell us all about the tri-tip, even bragging that he butchers it! There's something special about a place where people take real pride in what they do. The food didn't take nearly as long as I had been warned it might. It was obviously freshly made, from scratch. No over-prepped components or just-add-water ingredients. My veggies were all fresh and it was obvious they were seasoned before putting in my omelet....this shouldn't be a big deal but too many places overlook these important details. Husband's food was so good that after one bite he proclaimed, "yeah, we'll definitely be back." The kids' meals met the same quality standards. So the food was every bit as delicious as I'd heard, the tri-tip sample was juicy and really nicely seasoned...but what really impressed me was the efforts they made to provide great service. Jake wasn't particularly "polished" as a server, but he was warm, genuine, and enthusiastic. While I will still continue to patronize other Maricopa restaurants, the fact that Helen's has obviously listened to early criticisms and understands the importance of caring for their customers will have me returning more often. I'm already planning to try the "Winter Visitor"....I've hungrily listened to friends' descriptions of poutine and want to try this twist that uses mozzarella instead of the cheese curds I've heard are traditional. As we left (about an hour after we arrived), another server waved goodbye to us and said optimistically, "We'll see you soon for dinner!" Yes. You. Will. read more

I did not have a good experience at Helen's. Party of 2. Sat promptly and Hostess brought our drinks. At first glance I found the menu to be rather tiny and not a lot of variety in the choices. It was then a 10 minute wait until our server came to our table to take our order. We also had at this time to ask for a straw for his drink and a spoon to stir my coffee with (which was now cold) also needed sugar as the table caddie had none. We placed our orders (Biscuits & Gravy with 2 eggs over easy and sausage) and a Omelet with mushrooms, peppers and onions. We then waited 37 minutes and 36 seconds (timed on my phone) until our entire meal was delivered. They did refill my coffee multiple times but not once did they offer a refill on his Ice Tea. The Waitresses excuse was "everything is made from scratch, it takes time". Scratch food is a great way to run a kitchen, but you can't tell me she is baking a new set of biscuits every time B&G is ordered... When the food finally arrived it was satisfactory at best (and that is being nice). My omelet was swimming in oil and had 3 mushrooms with tons of peppers and onions that were the source of the oiliness (definitely not a fresh sauté). The sausage was ok. Best thing on my plate were the country potatoes that were luke warm. The B&G were tasty, biscuits were not warm. Gravy is to be commended for (definitely tasty). All in all I will not be returning to Helen's mainly because of the wait, but also because of the food. I am disappointed that my experience was not the same as the other reviewers. I was not impressed. I now understand the limited menu. read more

My wife and I had our ups and downs here this morning. Unfortunately more downs than ups. When I walked in I saw a server cleaning up spills on the floor left by the party who had just left. No big deal. She put two rags on the floor and used her foot to clean it up. Still no big deal. Then she picked up those tags an used them to wipe down the tables that were just bussed. That almost caused is to walk. Service was average at best. Our food order was correct-ish. However the wait for a coffee refill was reminiscent of being at the MVD. The chicken fried steak was made fresh but bland. The meat used was on the lower end quality wise. The French toast was also flavorless. All in all it was not an experience to remember but it makes me glad I don't live in Maricopa. read more

You could not ask for a more non-descript exterior for a restaurant. It is more than plain, it is nearly non-existent. But the food, goodness gracious, the food is huge. We ordered the "Hungry Man" breakfast and split it. Well, we could have taken the entire family and fed them all on these portions! Two huge pancakes, two eggs, some of the best sausage I have had in Arizona--not those dehydrated, tiny little links, but moist, yummy sausage links. The ham was enough for a ham and eggs breakfast--we both had some and there was some left over! Two slices of bacon, country potatoes and toast. Wow. Breakfast was a bit slow in coming out, so they brought us a poppyseed roll--made on premises. This woman can bake! Yummmmy..... Now, the place is new and having a few hiccups. There was no tea, and they ran out of sourdough bread for the toast. But our waiter (son of the owners) was gracious in his explanations, and took great care of us. They will get their ordering system down, and the orders will flow more smoothly. For a few months being open though, I was amazed at the job they did! Awesome! Sorry to hear 5 people called out, take charge & if people don't want to work get rid of them. I imagine it is not easy to get good people in, but keep trying you have a good thing going. The service needs a lot of work they have had to turn away 4 groups of patrons since we have been waiting 30 mins already for food. Waited 40 mins for food and it was not hot barley warm. Haven't seen the waitress more than twice. Jake did come to apologize for the long wait and was very kind. Food is good even if we had to wait a while for it. Layout of restaurant is not good for flow & restaurant management. They need some help from Robert Irvine. I hope she can make it since Maricopa needs some good quality food place's, any place that can ofer fresh & GF gets a plus in my book. Came here for breakfast found the dining room small but clean with wonderful smell of baked goods. Wait staff was very friendly and personable and came to our table within two minutes. Portions were big. I couldn't finish my meal. I didn't like the potatoes much, but my eggs were good. My husband loved his omelet. We took one of the heath bar brownies home and it was huge and wonderful. Would I eat here again yes sir. read more

Most awful experience I have had at any restaurant. Sat down and took 10 minutes to get a menu then another 15 minutes to get our drinks which were incorrect. We ordered when we got the drinks. After waiting 45 minutes for our food we noticed that 3 other tables who got there after us got their food before us. After an hour of waiting we got up and left. They seemed to be more concerned about taking care of their regulars. I would not ever recommend this dump to anyone. read more

We had breakfast, didn't care for our food. Not a comfortable set up. The service was just okay. I tend to also blame the server for example, when you order your potatoes crispy and they arrive albino, a good server should catch it if the cook doesn't care. I never send food back (I don't care for the flavor of spit) so I rely on a good server to be the on it. Since we have only been there once, may try again for lunch. read more

This restaurant is awesome!! The decor isn't what I go for, I go to eat a good meal. Everything is made from scratch and is perfectly seasoned. Hubby and I get the Hungry Man Breakfast, and he finishes mine off. I think the staff is great, although not polished, just down home and that's what we like about it. Ma and Pa's is what I like about it, No fuss with the decor, but much fuss with the prep of the food. Go here if you want to taste what eggs taste like, what pulled pork taste like or whateverr.....this place is SUPER!!! We will continue to go back. This place is hopping it gets very busy since it is a small place. The staff is nice and friendly and the meals are huge. I've been for both breakfast and dinner and both times it was great. Only down side is they are open Fri-Sun. Food is home cooking so like gravy's homemade, and home potato are fried and definitely in bacon fat so a day to throw away the calorie counting. read more

Helen's is nothing fancy, but the food is very good! There were only a few customers today at 8:00 a.m., so the service was naturally good. My ham/cheese/scrambled egg on an English muffin ($7) was really great! Wife's scrambled eggs, bacon & toast (also $7) was also quite tasty. Both orders came with house potatoes that were excellent! I attended an event catered by them. The food wasn't anything to write home about. The facility is very cramped and the service left a lot to be desired. We have driven by Helen's several times and always saw quite a few cars parked in the lot, so we decided to try it for breakfast one morning. Helen's is only open FRI SAT (8a-8p) and SUN (8a-2p). On FRI and SAT, they only serve breakfast until 11am (very disappointing!). On Sunday, breakfast is served all day (great!). There are about 17 tables in the relatively small restaurant, about half and half two-person and four-person tables. The place was packed when we got there around 11:30AM on Sunday, but I didn't feel overly crowded. We were greeted and given a table right away - I would expect a short wait for a table sometimes. The hostess let us know right away that the kitchen was running 20 minutes behind, that was nice and not a problem. Our waiter, Jake, came by and took our drink orders. Jake was great and apologized for the delays several times. He and other servers kept our coffee cups filled, so all was good. I got the "Hungry Man" breakfast and when it came, I could not believe how much food was included for a decent price! The two pancakes were over 1 inch thick but perfectly cooked and fluffy. It also came with 3 eggs, bacon, ham, sausage and toast. I barely put a dent in it. Definitely a good deal. My wife got the Rise and Shine breakfast which was perfect for her. The only downside was instead of country potatoes, they brought fresh fruit due to "a problem with the potatoes." This is a great breakfast spot if you want a lot of food and are not in a hurry. read more

I was hoping that Helen's kitchen would be a good breakfast spot but I was wrong. Let's start with the service. It took about 7 minutes for me to realize that the place was even open. There were remains of food on many of the tables but no host or waitress. I helped myself to a menu and sat on the only clean table available. When the waitress finally showed I was anxiously ready to order. I ordered the eggs benedict and orange juice. The orange juice was the furthest thing from OJ I'd ever tasted. It was like I was a kid again drinking Sunny D for breakfast. No orange flavor whatsoever. Now for the food. The only thing that was enjoyable were the eggs. I had two poached eggs over Canadian bacon and english muffins along with two hash brown patties. The bacon was not flavorful at all and the muffins weren't warmed or toasted. It felt like I was eating a last minute breakfast meal that was put together in 45 seconds. The hash brown patties were so greasy and over cooked that I think Jack in the Box would be embarrassed of serving them. Who knows when the last time the fryer oil was changed but you can taste the aging oil. I finished my meal but was quite unsatisfied with the quality. I probably come back for their famous tri-tip sandwich. I'm hoping for redemption! read more

The atmosphere was comfortable and we were greeted warmly as we came in. We sat down and were looking over the menu when one of the wonderful waitresses brought my one year old son a plate full of beautiful fruit and berries and a cup of crackers. They no showed the USDA Farm Science day today leaving hundreds of hungry guests hungry despite being pre-planned for weeks. They didn't respond to text, phone calls or email and when finally gotten hold of said they were "slammed" at their business location (so don't take the job if you can't handle it)... maybe okay for lunch but don't recommend them for catering. I have seen this little restaurant for years but never stopped in before. After being recommend by a friend we decided to give it a chance. Wow! Am I glad we did. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and it was amazing. Huge and fresh and delicious. I couldn't even eat half of the order. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs. He loved it. We came here for lunch one day and then breakfast the next. Both visits were really pleasant. The staff is extremely friendly. The food seems to always take a little while but that's ok. The portions are huge so be prepared for that. We were able to take left overs home. On both occasions we shared a snicker doodle cookie which was really yummy! Most of the food was pretty good but, for example, the onion straws as a side, not so great. Just a huge pile of greasy fried shoe string onions. I thought they'd be more like onion rings. Maybe next time I'll try the fries or some potato salad. The prices are pretty good for what you're getting, so no problem there. Overall it's an ok place, I'd go back to try other items. read more

Staying in town with some friends and read a few reviews on Helen's. Decided to try it and from the moment we walked in, I felt like I had been coming in for years. Lupe the hostess was so nice and told us everything about the menu and even gave advice about where to watch the Bronco game while in town. Now about the food, Orange juice was big enough to serve 3 people and at iHop this would have been 12 - 15 $$$. The portions are big enough to share and they will let you replace pancakes for toast and biscuits and gravy etc.. Anything we asked for was perfectly fine with them and made quick work of it. If you live here or are in town, stop at this pace because it's worth it! It's not fancy so if your looking for 5 star hotel food with oatmeal at $14 bucks a bowl, this is not your place.
