This is one of those places where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Besides the liquors, they also have some local beers and wines available as well as some cocktails (see more below). I was able to sample many of the liquors. Of their whiskeys, their rye was my favorite. Their gin is a bit milder and possibly a gin for people who aren't huge fans of gin. Their Black Rock Maple bourbon-infused maple syrup is amazing. You only need a little bit when pouring it; it's quite sweet, and it's also 10% ABV!!! The ambiance is a big plus, with a very friendly and chatty staff. We were welcomed and felt at home instantly. Of course, our first greeting was by a very excited dachshund puppy who seemed to need to check out every possible smell on my shoes. You can order cocktails featuring their liquors as well, and they make their own syrups and sour mixes. They also feature Martini Mondays, with a variety of martinis available all evening for $7 each. That's a fun reason to come back even if you don't need to purchase bottles of liquor on any particular day.

Right now, their to-go selection appears to be somewhat limited, so if you see something you like, get it! Their food and food truck situation appears to be in transition right now, but they do a great business on those aromatic and delicious pretzels they serve. Because it's off the beaten path, you have to know to come here, and they already have a steady set of regular customers. It's a great place to get away from the strip malls and crowds to relax for a drink or two.

Evidently you can only park in the lot certain hours, a subset of the times the brewery is open. But there's ample street parking, so there should be no worries there. To me, there's something special about a visit to Yankee Distillers. There's a sense of "We know…read morewhat we want to do, and we're gonna do it!" here that I haven't gotten from many other distilleries. Being off the beaten path, it's not someplace that will get a lot of casual drive by's - they get the people who want to come here. I wasn't sure what would be of interest to me here. After the tastings, I was very pleasantly surprised to find it would be their vodka! I'm not normally a vodka person, but there is a very short list of distilleries that make a vodka I can actually sip, and I just added their Eleven Lakes Vodka to that list, most likely right at the top. Finishing a very close second was their Rye. By the way, the ingredients for these come 100% from New York State. And with so many distilleries in NY shortening their aging, I appreciated that all their whiskies age a minimum of 6.5 years. The people here definitely love their craft and appreciate conversation with folk who have an understanding of distilling. If, of course, you can make it past the very effective guard dogs, Basil and Barley - though it's not so much they're protecting the place, just making sure they get their much deserved attention from you before, during, and after, your drinks. They are going the extra mile by making authentic mixers made with real ingredients. Take one look at the container of bloody mary mix on the bar and you will see what I mean. I ordered the Manhattan and it was fabulous. Every sip was perfection. The owner is a very warm and happy fella who clearly loves his business. The other draw at Yankee is the team of pugs that meet you on arrival. They look like loaves of bread with smooshy faces connected. One will sit on your lap with out any coaxing! This is a happy place serving happy things. The bottles of booze are a bit pricey but the drinks are reasonable. Definitely get out and enjoy one soon!

Their original location is on a beautiful, sprawling property on the outskirts of Schenectady and they recently opened this location in a Scotia strip mall. The exterior is super deceiving as the space is HUGE inside! I could not believe how large it is. It's perfect for a large get together. I grabbed a seat at the bar with my fiance and we already are fans of their beers so it was easy to find something we both liked. I tried the blueberry sour, which was super refreshing and not too sour. The bartender was so friendly and let us try samples as well. She said they're planning on opening the kitchen in the fall so I'm excited for that. Definitely a great new addition in Scotia!

I ordered a sour beer of raspberry-lime. It was decent but something was missing I still can't determine. My starter were house made chips with their blue cheese dipping sauce. They arrived almost instantaneously and were well done, which I appreciated. The dipping sauce is so thick, it's more like a spread with some intense flavor. My smashburger arrived, which looked great until I realized the burger had been smashed to the point of being paper thin, making the edges crispy. This made for a "bread sandwich" that was dry until I got to the sauce and kimchi in the absolute center, which was quite good. There was no side salad option, so I went with the German potato salad. It was over-seasoned to the point where I had to stop eating. The runner also brought over fries, which I hadn't ordered, but he left them on my table anyway. They were also well done and tasted good. However, I was "potatoed out" at that point. Many other diners had pizzas and they looked great. Clearly, they knew something I didn't and I should have tried one of those instead. I couldn't relay this to the server because he kept disappearing for long periods of time and never happened to see me hold up a hand for help. He was kind but not attentive by any means. After fifteen minutes of waiting, he did reappear and finally got my check. Common Roots could be an amazing place to dine and hangout but they've got some work to do. Five stars for the atmosphere and two stars for food and service.
