We had a nice time at Heineman Winery! The wine itself was okay- nothing mind-blowing- but enjoyable, especially at the incredibly affordable price of $3.75 per glass. Most of their wines are on the sweeter side, which may not be for everyone, but I appreciated trying something different. I also really enjoyed the Catawba juice- I'd never seen it before and, as a fan of Catawba wine, it was a fun surprise. The $12 tour was definitely worth it. You start by heading down into their cave, which is inside a geode--super small but very cool. Just a heads-up: there are quite a few steep stairs to get down there. Afterward, they take you upstairs and walk you through the wine-making process. Our guide was knowledgeable and made the tour interesting and informative. The tour also comes with a token for a glass of wine or juice, which was a nice touch. A couple of downsides: all wine is served in disposable cups, which was disappointing, especially for an island destination. It takes away from the overall wine tasting experience and feels a bit careless environmentally. The staff was mostly friendly, and there's a ton of outdoor seating in the back, which makes it a nice spot to relax post-tour. All in all, a fun stop with a unique charm, some great educational value, and unbeatable prices. Just don't expect high-end wine or a fancy tasting room vibe. read more

This place had such great wine! Two of the workers were very quick to help us and give recommendations, but one of them seemed to want nothing to do with us as far as customer service goes. Take the tour! If this is your first time to the island or winery I highly recommend taking the tour. The tour includes the crystal cave, winery tour and glass of wine for a very reasonable price. The tour is even kid friendly with an offering of grape juice and a lower price. Tickets can be purchased inside the gift shop. We were able to buy tickets and start a tour within 15 minutes. The first part of the tour consists of the crystal cave. Basically like walking into a giant geode. My kids loved this and it was very cool to see up close. Then you will be instructed to wait by the winery tour door and a few minutes later your guide will take you through the manufacturing part of the process and discuss the history of the winery and how the wine is made. Lots of opportunities for questions. Lastly you get to choose a glass of wine of your choice. They have a great outdoor area with a patio and picnic tables. It was calm and peaceful. It was a great experience and we felt it was well worth the money. read more

I have to admit I was disappointed in this winery. The facilities are dated and the decor was not very modern. It doesn't have a typical winery feel. Things were some simple and primitive that we didn't stay long to enjoy the wine. Apparently the state of Ohio says that Heineman needs to charge $3.50 for a sample. Unfortunately you don't know which wine to pick since you have no idea how the wine tastes. Therefore you just guess and hope the wine is digestible. On this occasion we picked the Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc to try. I have to admit that these wines were not very tasty or appealing to my palette. The real draw for us here is the Crystal Cave. It's really fascinating to stand inside one of the largest geodes in the world and examine the celestite crystals. It also has a neat history - giving tours of the Crystal Cave helped keep the winery afloat during Prohibition. I wouldn't mind a few extra minutes down there, but we enjoyed our visit. When we came back up, we headed out on the tour of the winery. The process is described, and they go through all of their wines and discuss the flavors/notes. Both tour guides were very personable and informative on their respective tours. At the end, you are taken into the tasting room, where, if you have purchased the tours, includes a sample of either wine or grape juice of your choice. There is also a small gift shop onsite. read more

Three couples went into this winery on Wednesday. ordering our bottles of wine. one of the employees start shouting at us that dogs are not allowed inside. we certainly understand that and was finishing ordering or wine to take outside, when this employee started screaming again about needing to leave. he ended telling one of the husbands to F** off. when we were outside another employee along with the belligerent man came out and told him to leave being very rude. we are not young kids making trouble, we are customers in our 60s and was very disturbed by this. needless to say, we will never be back and will tell anyone we know not go patronized your business. We went here on a Sunday afternoon and did both the wine and cave tour. We were shocked at just how busy it was for an early Sunday afternoon. There was enough room to park since everyone was driving golf carts. When we got inside there was a bit of a line but it moved quickly. For $11 we got a drunk token and a pass for both tours. They have you line up for the cave tour first. They make it very clear that there's 42 steps going down and 42 steps coming back up. It was cool to see the difference geodes and the sizes they are but the cave itself is only about 30' wide. Trying squeeze a bunch of people down there and calling it a tour is bit excessive. It was too tight to move and it's really just a tight walk around a staircase. I can't say I'd reccomend doing this part. The last leg of the tour was the winery and it was great!! There was tons of information about the process of wine making and what it entails. I really enjoyed that part. The wine tasting was pretty good. The Niagara and Belle are great. We enjoyed hanging out in the back are and relaxing. It's was a good winery. read more

This is a must see on a trip to Put in Bay, Fascinating tour of the cave which is actually a giant geode found years ago when digging for a well. It had amazing crystals covering the walls. The "cave" was large enough for around 30 people to gather. I wish my rock hound Dad could have seen this! The winery was like most and the wine good. We met some locals who were so friendly. We came here for the cave tour. I personally loved all the kitschy old signage and decor that some people are calling "dated" - I'd call it history and character. While the cave itself was really awesome (you're inside a giant geode!) the way they handled the tour was not. The cave is not very big and they cram way too many people into it. Basically once everyone is in the space they give you a history of the cave and then you walk through a small opening and go back up the steps. Our cave guide was very unenthusiastic. It was difficult to appreciate the cave because it was so crowded - you couldn't see much aside from what was right next to you. We also went on the winery tour that came with the cave tour because - why not? This part was surprisingly interesting and the guide was much more enjoyable than the one in the cave...but the whole point of it was just to try and sell you wine at the end. We cashed in our free wine and grape juice vouchers. I preferred my son's grape juice to the Pinot Noir. read more

I love love love the whole vibe of this place! We didn't dine in it make any wine purchases, but the building and property are lovely and we did spend quite a bit of time in the gift shop. The ladies working the counter were so sweet and they had so much cool stuff! They had very low cost/reasonably priced souvenirs as well as a wide selection of rocks and so many cute gifts. I came with a group and I think we all ended up making purchases there. Would definitely love to go back again and try the wine :) read more

A fun stop that breaks up a visit to South Bass Island. Heineman's is centrally located on the island, away from the hustle and bustle of Put-in-Bay. A fun atmosphere with friendly hosts. Sample some wine. Heineman's seems to specialize predominately in sweeter wines, Catawbas, and their grape juices. However, if you're looking for something different, try the Watersnake Noirette. The capsicum finish has a peppery bite you'll find unfamiliar to most other wines. It was so unique, I had to take home a bottle. read more

Awful experience. Wine wasn't terrible, but serving it in those tiny translucent Solo cups seemed like they were catering to know-nothings with bad taste. The charcuterie option? String cheese and Slim Jim's service on a styrofoam plate. I kinda like that it was a bit of a destination on the island, but it just kept getting worse. The manager was poor, the service was lousy, and the staff were bitchy at best. I think some people love this place because it makes them feel fancy for drinking wine. MUCH better quality place on the island for wine. I'd be willing to go back if they improve just about EVERYTHING about this place. read more

I was very glad to know that there are two wineries on this island, since wineries are our thing and it gave us another reason to visit Put-In-Bay for the first time. The building does not really feel like a winery to me, which can be okay if everything else is right about it. It felt more like a VFW hall with a little gift shop on the side. I understand it's a touristy island. You make wine and you probably don't have to work that hard toward anything else and people will come over and pay to drink the wine. But I feel as if making wine is all they had going for them. Did the wine taste good? Not particularly. I can drink dry, sweet, and everything in between. But I didn't find anything I really enjoyed here. I felt like I was just finishing off the samples because I didn't want to waste them. My wife could not finish hers. The sweetness actually made my throat feel like it was coated in sugar and my stomach was queasy. FYI, I usually like sweeter wine. I also had a really bad vibe from our server. We went to the bar and asked how it worked, looked at the menu, asked some more questions about the wine, and maybe she was coming off of a long hard day at work, but she was clearly not interested in serving or helping us. She put her time in, but we did not feel welcome. I think I'll give this place another shot next time we're on the island because well, I really want any winery to do well and I don't know if I've ever been to a winery that didn't have a flavor I enjoyed. I also acknowledge that people have bad days and you can not based your opinion of an entire business off of your interaction with one single employee. It does seem like it'd be fun with a group. I saw a group having a blast out in the backyard, which was a neat space, and I could see doing that here. Heinemans Winery and Crystal cave was a great way to hide out and kick back for a couple hours. We got tickets for the crystal cave and winery tours which went off without a hitch and were really interesting as well. The winery has been on the island for 130 years! They shared history of the winery and the cave and answered plenty of questions along the way :) We went to the back bar and got a pitcher of Sangria and a bottle of Ice Wine. I'm not a huge fan of sangria but THIS Sangria I could drink all day! Fruity and delicious!! The Ice Wine was also a sweet finish to the day, light and sweet and was well worth the price. This winery is very nifty and a must see if visiting Put-in-Bay! It is home to the largest Celestite geode in the world! You can take a tour and walk in and around the geode underground. The cave was found while the owners of the property were looking to build a water well! I truly enjoyed the experience and the wine /wine tour was lovely too. The Sweet Belle was my favorite wine​ I tasted, but you can't go wrong with any one​ of them. Sean the bartender was very knowledgeable about all the products and was quick to serve. read more

Upon our first stop, we were virtually ignored at the bar while trying to sample their wines. We decided to give it another shot later in the day. This time, we purchased the cave & winery tour, which gave you a glass of wine at the end. After the ticket purchase, the lady announcing the departures had zero personality or hospitality skills. The Cave tour was decent if your expectations are moderate. It's basically a walk in a circle while inside of a giant geode. We were then led on a 10-minute tour of the winery where our guide was quickly pulled from the bar and gave a mediocre. Memorized speech that did nothing to enhance our experience. Now, we went back to the bar and had to wait for a third bartender to arrive. She seemed disgruntled at her fellow bartenders and didn't show any thought of hospitality to her customers. While this could be a very unique spot, I believe that they are being run by "the old guard" and just don't know who they really want to be - a winery, a tasting room, a cave tour, or something else. Needless to say, we didn't purchase any bottles there and can not recommend anyone to make the stop while on the island. read more

The crystal cave was basically a catfish scheme. Pictures online were farther more interesting than the "cave" itself. Steps were super steep & the tour guide wasn't as informative as we thought given the history of the winery and cave. Not very spacious for large groups. Very quick tour, like 5-10 mins, rather than the 50 min tour advertised on the website. read more
