Another week goes by and I finally get it and the neck is so warped its unplayable. Johnathan had told me he went over the guitar before he shipped it. I would of liked to ad a picture of how bad this neck was. No offer to replace the guitar or apology for waisting my time. It's possible to get a interested , knowledgeable salesperson. When this happens it's a good day to. It's also possible to have to beg someone to "help" and even if they do come around they have no idea what they're talking about. This can be frustrating. Also I would NOT recommend having them repair, clean or restring anything. That particular service here is a disaster. read more

Love Heid music, we brought our 4 year old grandson to look at a guitar for his birthday. They allowed us to let him look, touch and play a number of guitars they let us buy and are keeping it till his birthday party in a week. we were able to get a beautiful butterscotch electric guitar that can take him to adulthood and beyond with out crushing our wallet ( sale on guitar stuff till end of the month). they also encouraged him to try drums which he likes also so maybe for his 6th birthday. the truth my family has been using Heid music as our music dealer and resource for over 20 years!! read more

We were in Heid Music to buy a guitar pedal based on the advertised price on Heid's web site. Nathaniel Lutes in the Guitar Department argued and initially would not honor the posted price on the store's Web site. After a great deal of protest, he finally honored the sale price on the web. Competent employees should be very aware of store promotions and discounts and not waste customer's time. I also will never return to Heid Music. Do not buy from Goniffs! read more

I went to the Madison store to try a PRS Fiore. The guitar was listed on Reverb and reported to be in Mint Condition. The sales person significantly misrepresented the fees charged by Reverb. I grew up in Appleton and all our instruments were from Heid's. I currently have a little piano my Dad had sent down to me from Heid's in Appleton many years ago. Peter Heid, who owned the store at the time, on College Avenue, was a patient of my Dad's and just a really, really lovely man. I couldnt believe it when I heard Madison was getting another local music store, after the closure of Good & Loud and the downsizing of Ward Brodt. And yet we did (and Ginter's expanded and Dave's Guitar Shop is coming, but I digress). Heid Music originated in Appleton, WI. My mom, who grew up in Appleton and has taught piano lessons since she was a teenager (she now has a teenage granddaughter and is still teaching) had her first recitals at their flagship Appleton store. Their focus is on piano, band, orchestra, and sheet music, but they also have a decent selection of guitars. Not much by way of basses, keyboards, or drums, but they do have SOMETHING. It's a little more mellow than Guitar Center, Ginter's, or Good & Loud. You wont hear 20 different versions of Smoke On The Water at the same time. You may hear several piano pieces, all at varying skill levels. The staff has always been helpful to me. I've bought smaller things there (straps, strings, etc) but havent made a big purchase yet. I do check there consistently. Worth the stop on your way to Guitar Center. Definitely better than Guitar Center in a lot of ways. read more

Just took my Fender Stratacoustic guitar in to be set up. I bought it used and it was killing my hand. The strings were much too high off of the neck, especially at the bottom. After Nathaniel worked his magic and with the help of a lighter set of strings, it now plays like my Fender Stratocaster. I COULD NOT BE MORE PLEASED. I also got to meet Kevin who helped me pick out some ancillary items for my new winter activity. As a retired person, I have decided to take on a new challenge, at least through the winter months. read more

Driven by many a-times, but I have zero musical talent. One of my daughters plays viola at school but she found a ukulele at a thrift shop and liked it too. So for Christmas I went to Heid on the advice of a friend that has a very high musical IQ. First thing is the store was much bigger than I would have thought. Very nicely laid out, clean and well organized. Staff was very inviting, friendly and knowledgeable. Nathaniel took the time to show me several options, explained pros and cons and gave very honest opinions. Needed a timely repair on my horn and had this shop recommended to me. I reached out via their site and got an immediate response with a timeline estimate. They got my horn fixed in fewer days than estimated at a great price. The fix (on my trombone slide) was stellar and they even cleaned up my horn and sanitized my mouthpiece as a bonus. Above and beyond service! The clerk at the counter was friendly and even recognized me from a couple of local bands I played with. A great store with tremendous service and personality. My experience wasn't quite as in depth as the previous reviewers, so I have no complaints. The store has a lot of instruments, sheet music, reeds, kid instruments (is there any instrument worse than the recorder? I say that with total sincerity as I fear the day my youngest hits the recorder age. My oldest has been there. It was horrid). I like the ability to go into the store to buy him the reeds he wants (I've done amazon before and clearly I'm not equipped to buy the correct ones as I've bought the wrong ones there). He also needed a flip folder for band camp. I love that the supplies he needed were here, we got a school discount (which would assist with the mark-up prices others gave mentioned). We didn't get an offer for help, but didn't need one. read more

These people are WONDERFUL! My wife and I travelled to Madison for my daughter's wedding. The good folks there rented us a violin for the occasion. I purchased a guitar there. We found the staff to be helpful, kind, and knowledgable. Our rental car died. The staff at Heit allowed us to hang out until we could get a ride out. The staff is great and helpful. I went to buy some things at Heid Music in Madison today. One of those was a box of reeds for myself. The flyer the put out said 50% off of reeds. I go to the store pick up my box of Rico Royal reeds for $30. Get to the checkout and I'm charged the $30 for them. I asked and they said "it's 50% off retail price". They always have the retail price listed at $60 and then Heid price at $30. I paid the price got into my car, had a small conversation with the wife and decided to take everything back that I just bought. I use to stand by Heid music, in fact I bought my tenor sax there many years ago, based on customer service, but now they have failed in that respect. read more

The store manager and we agreed on the price of an musical instrument. We paid half price as deposit, walked out of the store and waited for the shipment. A couple of days later the manager called and said they were unable to sell it as the agreed price, because they figured out NOT enough profit was made in this transaction. So either we pay more or we withdraw the transaction. We came to store again to try to persuade him. All the employees there were as cold as ice to us (ironically compared to the attitude when we were first time there), and the manager did not even apologize. Heid, Is this the way to run business? I've only been to Heid Music once: in search of a set of violin strings. That experience was so helpful and knowledgable and VERY appreciated. I've done the violin thing for a long timed have been in and out of many music stores - However I've been on a long hiatus and needed new strings for a different kind of playing. We went in search of an intermediate violin for my son whose been playing for 6 years. The violins started at about $1,200 and the luthier took one look at us mumbled something about not having rentals and went back to working on the instrument he had in his hands. There's some grey area between a $150 violin and a $2000 one, it's too bad Heid had nothing to offer in this point, but it's even worse that the luthier was so unhelpful. read more

Brought my daughter's clarinet in for repair. Carl was knowledgeable, friendly and was able to explain the nuances of the repair to me. He also made some suggestions for reeds and other upgrades, and communicated with me via email. My daughter is thrilled and said it is shiny, works well and quite responsive. She also commented about the reed, stating that she doesn't know why it is better but seem to make a significant difference in her playing. I have tried time and time again to order music here. The staff turnover is so high in sheet music...7 people I can count in the past 4 years. They make mistakes on my orders, misplace my music after they call to tell me it is in stock, and never have the music I need in stock so I am constantly special ordering. They are not knowledgable about the music I need to find. I have to shop at night because of my hectic schedule, and they rarely have enough clerks working to help me with questions. Also, the staff seems distracted or aloof when I am in the store. They are friendly enough but somewhat disinterested. Don't even get me started on whether I will ever upgrade my instrument with them. I found great deals on amps and mics online. I now shop online for all my music needs. read more

I purchased my son a used saxophone and wanted to get it cleaned up and pads replaced.. I was told the sax would get disassembled and a full dip/flush clean for a quoted price of around $100. I was told it would take about a week due to the busy holiday season. After a week I called and talked to the sax repair man to check on the sax wanting it complete in time to give my son for Christmas. The sax man told me he was currently working on it and did not have to take it apart and told me if he had it would have been about $30 or so more.. Which was completely different to what I was quoted when I set up the appointment. I was under the understanding the sax was going to get a complete deep clean. I picked up he sax, and the sax man did a terrible job. He replaced the pads but I noticed cork that was never replaced and the clean job was horrendous. It looked like someone just took a tag to it. The books and cranny a were still caked with gunk... Because I wanted to give this in time to my son for Christmas and at that point I did not have the strength to complain I did not have them redo it. I was far too disappointed to ever step foot in there again. EVER. Shame on Heid music for doing such poor work and charging people for nothing. read more
