I saw him for an initial visit, where he completed a thorough evaluation and asked many questions about my symptoms, health and lifestyle. He made recommendations and we scheduled a 6 month follow up. His attitude was one of concern, respect and assistance. I felt he cared about me as an individual from our first meeting. He was efficient yet thorough and I had complete confidence in his knowledge and skills. If I have any future concerns I would definitely see him again and I recommend him and this practice highly. Everyone in the office was professional yet caring, the kind of service you want from your health care providers, but you don't always get!

I used these reviews to pick my doctor. I met with him and he is very knowledgeable and caring. He suspected me of having sleep apnea and recommended me to a specialist before I go through with the surgery. Turns out he was right! After that was taken care of I went back to discuss a surgery date and it turns out he had a cancellation right before the new year. It was only 3 or 4 days out so his team rushed to get the insurance to sign off on it and fast forward 3 1/2 weeks later I feel like a new person! I can breathe again. Don't do what I did and research about septoplasty, none of that is true with Dr. Astrachan. He had me in and out in no time. Best part is my insurance paid for the whole thing! If you cannot breathe properly do yourself a favor and go see Dr. Astrachan.

Nonetheless, I left without a diagnosis. Before my appointment six months later, in talking with a relative, it seemed possible that I had a similar issue as my blood-relative and brought up the possibility during the appointment. Dr. Hecht cavalierly said it was not possible, but my next hearing test indicated the very same issue. It just makes me curious of whether I should have been diagnosed earlier and why he was so certain I would not have the same thing. Working with GT on hearing implements was also just ok. She certainly goes through the motions and has done this a million times, but I found it hard to interject with questions, and I sometimes felt rushed.

The poor receptionist had to break the news to us. We don't blame the receptionists; they don't make the policies here. They also don't make new patient appointments here either, so they can't even reschedule us right now. I was given a slip of paper with a number to call to express my dissatisfaction and request a reschedule, which I did. What I couldn't do was speak with a supervisor. I also could not change preferences for when being notified about changes to appointments by doctors. But we don't use my chart in any regular way. We are not in it daily to see if a doctor changed an appointment. As I explained to the receptionist, my mother had been saying loudly in the background that she wanted to speak with a supervisor. Suddenly, three people in blue scrubs filed out to the desk in front of us, the ones who couldn't do anything. By the way, those receptionists sit in stools that are so low that if the patient were in a wheelchair, they'd never be able to see the person on the other side. Furthermore, if a patient starts having difficulty breathing or something in the waiting room, they'd never see that either. That's not putting patients first. So the blue scrubs kindly reimbursed our parking ticket and explained that the policy regarding notification preferences must be changed in My Chart, and it's not a policy they can change. Now, I can imagine that people might want to change their preferences multiple times a year, depending on what's going on, ER visits, hospitalizations, illnesses, vacations, relocations, and other things. It isn't helping the patient to make this so difficult; it doesn't serve the doctors or the doctor-patient relationship. It's the kind of thing that we'd want to check on and verify every time we show up at an appointment. We can't be expected to go into My Chart and monitor these toggles, wherever they are, whenever we have an appointment. This needs to be changed so that it can be updated and changed at the point of service for the patient's convenience, NOT the doctor's convenience, to go into My Chart and, with one click, derail a patient's entire day if you didn't happen to look into my chart. We want to be notified by phone and mail, not My Chart.

In this instance however I feel it is…read morewarranted and would like the public at large to be aware of the poor quality of service rendered and the complete lack of professionalism. Eaton Chen is of Chinese/Taiwanese extraction and has a very pronounced accent. As I deal with scientists from all over the world this IS NOT an issue for me. What was stunning and is a BIG ISSUE was the complete lack of communication with me the patient, his unpreparedness as a doctor and the rudeness that I witnessed toward his staff. These are all the hallmarks of malpractice! Eaton Chen is part of a large practice, Southern New England Ear, Nose, Throat & Facial Plastic Surgery Group LLP. My comments are specific to Eaton Chen but I feel a practice that condones such poor core competencies from one of its partners should be avoided altogether. My original ENT that I thought was superb retired, and so the need to find another doctor in the area. I did not research the different practices but thought, given the size of the practice, and the years of service (using Malcom Gladwell's measure) I should be ok. The previous ENT worked alone and so I was reluctant to go into a practice with just one individual again. My visits comprised being told there is a problem (no description of what might be the problem) with my ear. During this first visit I went into the history of the issue - a problem that resurfaced a couple of times over a decade. He had his technician run some tests (which seemed well run and professional) and then I went in again. The second visit with the doctor was what underscored his poor attention to detail. Usually the doctors I visit review the file, especially when there are tests they have prescribed, before they walk in to see the patient. In this case, Dr. Chen walks in, looks at the results on his tablet PC, mumbles about the problem with the ear, looks at one ear and then says I will see you in 3 weeks or so. Well, I asked him what the results of the test were - he says you have a problem with the right ear. Now, originally when I went in the problem was with both ears (fluid etc.), so I would have thought looking in both may not be such a bad idea. When I pointed out my history he says - you never mentioned that before. I said I did and then he looks at his notes and sure enough I had mentioned it before. So clearly he wanted me in-and-out with no thought to looking at the results in detail. The meeting lasted all of 5 minutes, at the end of which, he calls for his assistant/ nurse, realizing he is missing a piece of equipment. He is curt and rude to her when she doesn't quite figure out what he wants through his thick accent and then I realize he wants that instrument (not quite tweezers but something of that size) but he is done with me and it has no bearing on his examination of me. I almost asked him to look in both ears to make sure he hadn't missed anything! This is an individual who makes a very large sum of money each time he sees someone and has figured out that the less time he spends the more people he can see. Not caring to review the case history and then claiming I hadn't mentioned it underscores the cavalier attitude he brings to his job.

Yes, he is very difficult to understand because of his thick accent. And No, he does not go for small talk. So if your looking for a doctor who likes to talk and not do his job, this is not the doctor for you. But if you are looking for a good doctor, who knows what he is doing and is going to get you answers? Dr. Chen is for you. He had taken out my daughters tonsils. And put 2 sets of tubes in both my daughters ears. He had to remove my Dad's vocal cords because my Dad came down with throat cancer from years of smoking. It was Dr. Chen who had caught the cancer that saved my Dad's life. Although he unfortunately was not able to save my Dad's voice. He did give my Dad another 15 years of life, that myself and my family are so grateful for. So give Dr. Chen a try, I believe you will not be sorry.
