Trains and Summer days. This late review is derived from Enya's song Trains and Winter Rains. I must say I love taking this train just to get to my connecting flight. I did not get any chance to take any photos because my phone ran out of batteries so I thought I leave my hotel early and go for the ride to Heathrow. This train is so nice. It's comfortable, rapid and light. If you have taken the tube multiple times during your stay in London then this is for you. I never taken a British train before but I have to declare this had changed the way I travel. The seats feel so soft it feels like sitting on a cloud. The outside looks really gorgeous. As a rail fan I really love the color choice. The service is quick and easy. Buy your ticket and get going. They even have nice areas to put your luggage. The train is quiet too. I'm a fan of getting from the airport to the City super-quick.......but I'm not a fan of paying $60 for 2 people & that only being half the cost of what it takes to get us where we needed to be.....we paid a taxi $50 more to take us to East End from Paddington Same experience last year when taking a cab from Paddington to the West End Heathrow Express dumps everyone off at Paddington Station & is the easiest way to get from the airport, wheelie bags in tow, onto transportation & into the city Having a friend come pick us up? Forget about it! That would take around 2 hours each way & comes w/ A LOT of road rage Taxi? Double forget about it!! Why oh why was I not born European?! Heathrow Express made arriving/leaving London simple. Too bad getting in and out of Los Angeles International Airport isn't as simple. (SFO is a different matter) Free WiFi, clean, comfy,but not much room for luggage. So, if you are an excessive packrat you're best off with purchasing 1st class tickets (more room). The ride to Paddington Station is short, so who really needs 15 minutes of free WiFi? *raises hand* This tourist does! I have to update friends and family about my arrival okay? The Heathrow Express is useful if you arrive at Terminal 3 and live near Paddington (or on the Bakerloo). As I always arrive into Terminal 4 and live on the Northern, the express is a giant waste of money. To get to the terminus, you have to take another train from 4 to 3 that only leaves every 15 minutes. But it's poorly times, so as soon as you're done dragging your bag through the too-small turnstiles to change trains, the Express has already left and you have to wait another 25 minutes. And when you get to Paddington, you're not even in the underground and have to lug the suitcase around some more. At least on the tube everyone's helpful. But then, if you meet the qualifications in the first sentence, it might be perfect for you. Just make sure you don't take the local train (Heathrow Connect) and end up on a platform in Southall with no train for another 30 minutes. read more

If you can't afford to be late or miss a flight, I think the extra cost of the Heathrow Express is worth every pence. (Although, booking early online to get a discount doesn't hurt matters.) When we arrived in London on mid-day Sunday, we took the tube into the city, and between breaks in service and changing lines, it took us almost two hours to reach the Bayswater station. With this in mind, especially leaving on a Sunday, catching the HEX gave us total peace of mind. The train from Paddington was super clean, roomy, and got us to Heathrow in the blink of an eye. You can book tickets online -- we didn't even print ours; just showed the email on our phone -- or get them right at Paddington. Money well spent for us. read more

The map is a bad representative of the service. The Heathrow Express Service leaves from Paddington NOT Victoria. I tend to agree with the reviews here... it is a useful service but VERY expensive. If I am not "slumming" it on the tube to Heathrow I tend to use the Heathrow CONNECT service. It is similar to Heathrow Express but it stops at about 8 stations (including Ealing -which is useful to West Londoners). More importantly, it is nearly half the price! read more

This was a very easy way to get to the heart of London from Heathrow Airport. There were many kiosks for buying tickets as soon as we left the secure part of the airport, and lots of signs directing us on how to get to the station. The train arrived quickly, was very comfortable and had plenty of room for our luggage. It's not cheap, but it got us to the Paddington Station within 15 minutes. The free WiFi worked well, which was handy. We had train tickets from King's Cross to Edinburgh a few hours after our arrival, so time was of the essence, and it was definitely worth it to pay extra to take this route instead of the tube. On the way back, we were in less of a hurry, so it made more sense to save a few pounds and stick with the Underground. It's nice that there's multiple public transportation options to get here. This is the best way between Heathrow and London if you have luggage and there aren't enough people in your party to fill a taxi. If I don't, I'll just take the Piccadilly line and save the money. I'm usually staying near the Gloucester Road or South Kensington tube stops anyway. Haven't done it from Terminal 5 yet but I'm sure it will happen soon. And just like Laura N., I don't bother with first class. It was tempting until I learned that just like every other train, it isn't any faster. read more

To get in and out of London via Heathrow, I don't even know if there's another option to the Heathrow Express. It costs £34 return and the trains were ready to depart within 5 minutes of my arrival both times. It is a really short journey (15 minutes?) and the wifi was working, so I was even able to get some work done while I was travelling. I really can't fault the Heathrow Express. The trains seem to be very new and clean, comfortable and lots of storage for bags. The other passengers were even nice and chatty, an unusual experience for London. My only gripe is the price, but seeing as I don't even know of an alternative, I can see why it's so expensive. read more

There's no faster or more hassle free way to get from central London to Heathrow. At the peak of my travels I've seen up to three round trips per month to and fro T5. Trains reliably depart every 30 minutes and seldom see delays. My awaiting Addison Lee at Paddington makes every journey feel absolutely seamless. Fresh, clean, fast and friendly. What more could you want in transport?! I love this service. My favourite feature is of course that which has been mentioned numerous times in other reviews - 15 minutes non-stop into central London - what's not to love? The trains themselves are fabulously well kept and very clean. There are flat screen TVs in each carriage with current news and weather, as well as info about destinations and attractions. Just loud enough to hear, not so loud that it's irritating. The trains also have WIFI if you reaaallly can't go 15 minutes without a good tweet. The only reason I didn't give it a five star rating is the price. £18* for a 15 minute train ride aint cheep by any stretch of the imagination. That being said, I believe the service is worth paying for twice over. I paid with a card in a machine upon my arrival which was also quick and easy. All that's missing are some Dorothy shoes to click your heels twice as the train leaves. *Incidentally, I paid for a return which costs £34, saving you £4 total - but it's worth mentioning that it cost the same amount as the online tickets, so no savings as far as I can see to pre-book. read more

After a long flight, taking the Heathrow Express to Paddington station was very convenient. Yes, there were cheaper ways to get from LHR to Paddington, but as a first time visitor to London .... staying at a hotel near Paddington station ..... the express was a good choice. Tickets were purchased in advance. You can buy them at LHR just as easily. Ticketing agents were spotted all over the airport. Trains depart every 15 minutes and the travel time between LHR to Paddington was a mere 15 minutes... non-stop. Free WiFi was provided on the express so it made it easy to let loved ones at home know we arrived in London. The train was clean, bright, and comfortable. I would without hesitation take the express again. read more

The Heathrow Express is like, really fast. So if you need to get to Heathrow in ultra quick time, this is the way to do it. It's door to door in 15 minutes from Paddington to Terminals 1,2,3, a couple of minutes more to terminals 4 and 5 I believe. It is very expensive though (I paid 26 one way, ONE WAY!!) but I believe the return is about 30-35 so not quite as ridiculous. I tend to take the tube on the Piccadilly line more often than not as I live South of the river and Paddington isn't the easiest of stations to get to. That said, if you're nearby to Paddington, this is the way to do it. read more

I always took the tube, when I arrived and needed to get into the city. But I have to admit, it is really worth investing some extra pounds and changing in Paddington even if you have a destination right at the Picadilly Line. You have essentially three transportation choices for getting into central London from Heathrow: Cab, Heathrow Express and the Tube. Unless the company is picking up the tab, I'd skip the cab: the fare will approximate $100+ assuming you're not heading over to Canary Wharf and East London and then it will be another $40 more. The Tube: Just thinking about the onslaught of luggage and morning commuters as you rattle along for more than an hour down the Piccadilly Line into central London only to transfer to yet another line, dragging your luggage and jet-lagged ass up and down stairs. It's not a pretty sight but one I know well, I've done it more than I want to admit. Heathrow Express: Pricey but quick. I usually stay somewhere near Oxford Street so I figure an additional taxi fare into the overall price. It's not cheap but it is convenient and as the advertising promises, 15 minutes every 15 minutes. The trains don't make any stops and are comfortable, clean and have racks for luggage. I think the price per mile is obscene but after a trans-Atlantic flight, do you really want to suffer the lines and cramped quarters of the Tube as you make 18 stops into the center of the city? I'm sure the service provided by Heathrow Express is excellent.....when the tracks are operational. But when they're not, as their trains just suddenly stop running, their customer service is rather horrid. Push me off to the Underground, i'm fine, but give me my money back! I'm not even going to get into it, but it seems that getting a refund for their services is somewhat akin to pulling teeth. The Heathrow Express is super convenient and very nice. It's so easy to buy your ticket at the airport and you save a few pounds if you buy the return trip as well which makes it easy. The cost is a bit high, 34 pounds, but it was worth it because it made getting to and from the airport seamless. The train runs every 15 minutes and it's only a 15 minute train ride from the airport to the Paddington Station. The trains are very clean and nice and have a very futuristic look to them. There is space to stow your luggage. I"m definitely a fan and wish we had more transportation options like this in the States. read more

If I knew the logistics of the tube system at the time I would have just taken that and saved a lot of money. But for the speed, and ease of the Heathrow Express, it is certainly worth the extra pounds to use it to get into central London in lieu of the tube. The train was very clean, and very quick. at 20£, it is certainly not cheap, but can be worth it if you need to be in town quickly, or have a hard time understanding the underground system. read more

It's a train to Paddington from Heathrow. It is fast, spotlessly clean, it runs constantly, and it doesn't stop until it gets where it's going. But it's rather expensive. pro-tips: I don't know why anyone would bother with first class for such a short jaunt, and it takes nearly the duration of the trip to log in to the free WiFi on an iPhone. It makes cabs look absurd (unless you're in a group) but cheaper public options may be better for many. read more

The proximity of Paddington and ease of connection via circle line to my destination made flying to heathrow a better option otherwise I would have went for London City Airport. As others have said the express will get you to the city in 15 min and the service is reliable. The only downside here is the cost, assuming you but the ticket 7 days in advance then you are looking at a 55euro return based on Nov 2011 exchange rate. So the service may be fast but you are certainly paying for it. read more

I would only take Heathrow Express if I was in a rush. Its really pricey if you are trying to conserve your money. You can just take the direct tube to Heathrow and not have to pay a lot. We got confused and paid with return which we could have clearly spent that money on something more useful since we were not in a rush. When you return from London to Heathrow, the signs are very confusing and nothing really pointing you to your terminal. You have to make sure to check before you get to Heathrow or you will be running from Terminal to Terminal. Its clean and a lot of business people travel this way, but if you are a frugal person, take the regular underground tube!!!!! read more

By far the easiest way to get into central London from Heathrow Airport. Hubby and I purchased our tickets well in advance and was able to download the tickets into Apple Wallet. There is a train every 15 minutes, so no anxiety of missing a ride while waiting the horribly long custom lines at Heathrow. There is plenty of room for luggage and the non-stop line takes you directly to London Paddington at a very reasonable price. I would recommend it above: - Taxi - surface roads and traffic causes delays and becomes pricey - Driver - one of our driver was angry that he had to wait because we were stuck in Heathrow's custom's line and charged us more than a taxi - Underground - considered a Zone 5 ticket plus constant stops and overcrowding causes difficulty to handle luggage read more

I'm not breaking any new ground with this one, just adding on. Heathrow Express does just what it says it will: get you to the airport in a lightening fast 15 minutes. It's also really expensive. Paddington is a bear (HAH!) to get to for me in the east too so I'm much happier saving the 16.50 and hopping on the Pic. Sure it takes 1.5 hours, but I'm not important enough yet for that to matter. When I am, all you little people better remember to stay out of way...though it won't really matter b/c I'll take my monster truck/hovercraft/helicopter to the airport. read more

From Paddington station catch the Heathrow Express to Heathrow Airport in 15min. It is probably the fastest transportation from airport to main city hub I've experienced. There is WiFi available, just provide an email address. Space is limited for your luggage if the train is packed, so be prepared to squueze your luggage onto your lap. Cost is 19.00GBP which is a pricey, however, you are paying for convenience. read more

Heathrow is a hassle at the best of times but the Heathrow Express makes getting from Heathrow to Central London relatively painless. The biggest downside is the price, it's about £16 one way. Every time I've taken the Heathrow Express it's been on time and the journey only takes 15 minutes or so. My favorite perk is the free WiFi that they have on board. I've used it plenty of times to coordinate meeting points using Skype after a ten hour flight from San Francisco. read more

15 minutes from central London to Heathrow airport? Yes, please. This is by far the fastest and most comfortable way to get to London's (in)famous airport. Book online, send the ticket to you phone, get on at Paddington and off you go, right into the terminal buildings for T1-3 and T5. At 34 GBP for a return, it's a little pricey. I read that mile for mile, its the most expensive train journey in the world. read more

I have mixed feelings about the Heathrow Express. I like that it is a quick ride from LHR to the city. I like that it is much cheaper than a cabbie. I don't like that it ends in Paddington Station and then I still need to take a cab or schlep over to Circle Train then transfer to Piccadilly so I can get to Knightsbridge (especially with luggage). I don't take it if I need to go to Knightsbridge. Too much of a hassle. What usually happens is we take the Piccadilly Line straight to the Knightsbridge stop from Heathrow and on the way back to Heathrow we take a cabbie. read more

As Rob K. pointed out, this is a good alternative to Heathrow Express. Unless you are short on time, it's probably wise to save some bucks (oops, I mean pounds), and take Connect rather than the Express. Express trains are a bit better (in decor), but Connect trains are pretty good too... I mean, it's a short journey anyway, so who cares? There are well-placed signs everywhere at Heathrow as well as Paddington (assuming that you are transferring to Tube system there), so you shouldn't have any problem finding your way to final destination. read more

They don't lie. the fastest way to the city from LHR. Modern trains, running on time at least most of the times (which is not something I expect in a train-third-world-wasteland that I consider the UK to be) Taking you to Paddington in 15 mins. THe ticket can be conveniently purchased either via their straightforward app or in passing by at one of the guys standing in the terminal. The price is steep though. If you're flying into Heathrow, this is the best and fastest way to get into London. Definitely not the cheapest but the most convenient and easiest way to Paddington Station. Everytime i fly into heathrow i always forget which line to take on the express but no worries there are people in yellow vests that are wandering around and ready to answer questions. If you just missed one of the trains... no worries, another will be coming in 15 minutes. The trains are also super clean it almost looks new. i'm a huge fan of how well this train is organized i only wish it was a bit cheaper. read more

Reminder to self : avoid international travel the day after a Yelp event ... I haven't fully recovered from last night 's fun and everything seems to take a lot longer today. Perfect excuse to pay that little (well, quite a bit especially if you pay on board the train!) bit extra for a much shorter journey to Heathrow. I live in West London, and while the trip takes almost a full hour by tube, I can make it in half that time. Except for today, everything seems to have conspired against me. Instead of the regular 15 mins frequency trains are leaving every half hour, then crawling along due to engineering works. This makes the extra fiver even more painful - by the time I remembered that I didn't have a ticket, the driver was running a test ; by the time the doors could be operated again there were only a few minutes left till departure. Signal strength of the free wifi is almost zero, so paying for this review after all. Oh well still better than the tube with a hangover. read more

If you fly business class on some airlines, they offer you a free limo to Heathrow. Don't take it. The Heathrow Express is about four times faster, and more comfortable. Fifteen minutes to Paddington Station (which, in case you didn't know, is not far from Oxford Street or Hyde Park, and convenient to all the West End and Knightsbridge haunts so beloved by tourists.) The Heathrow Express offers free wi-fi in 1st Class, but with a mere 15 minutes in the train, I find I never have enough time to make good use of it. read more

I live in West London, so this is a must for getting to Heathrow. Even if I didn't live in West London, I'd be using Heathrow Express. It's the quickest way to get to Heathrow. There is free use of the train at Heathrow to change terminals. There is tons of room on the train with plenty of luggage storage. Never sitting on top of others. Outlets are there as well as free wifi. There are numerous options to present your ticket including the app for iPhones. Join Heathrow Rewards, and you can get rewards for pre-booking your ticket(s). I'm a fan of the service because you also get complimentary upgrades every so often! read more

I've taken the Heathrow Express many, many times. In my experience, the trains are always on time. Yes, there is the occasional service interruption where the trains run every 30 minutes instead of every 15 minutes, but that is always posted on signage all over the place - so plan accordingly. If you are traveling to/from the airport to/from Paddington Station, this is the way to go. If you have to transfer from Paddington to another line, you MUST plan for the time it's going to take you to get from the HEX station to the Underground line of your choice. If your timing is off by the slightest, or you are walking a bit slower that day, you may miss the train you need to transfer to and have to wait for the next one to come along. As the ride to/from Heathrow is so fast, I don't really see the need to go with a first class ticket. Unless the train is super packed, buying a regular ticket is fine and you'll have plenty of room. The trip itself is so fast, that there would hardly be enough time to spread your work out in the first class cabin before you'd have to pack it all up again and exit the train. If you know you're going to return via HEX, opt for the round trip ticket to save a few GBPs. As for taking a cab or Uber instead? Depends on where your final destination is and what the traffic is like. By the time you pay for a metered fair (or, heaven forbid, surge pricing) you're far better off using HEX for the most part. On a very busy Saturday night, I looked at pricing estimates for Uber to go from Piccadilly to Terminal 4. Cost was guesstimated at about 40GBP. But what about traffic? How long would it take? In the end, an estimate is just that, and you don't really know what the final cost will be once traffic delays, etc. kick in. I opted for HEX, took the Bakerloo from Piccadilly to Paddington and the HEX from Paddington to T4. Cost was just above half of the Uber estimate, but did take a total of 1-hour because of the reduced service on HEX that night. There are outlets at each seat and free wifi on the train as well. As long as you aren't surrounded by loud or rude people, it's a pleasant and cost-effective way to get to central London. read more
