I recommend Ascent Audiology highly! I have had growing high frequency hearing loss for about 15 years, with complaints at times from family members increasingly. But I did not want to look old by wearing a hearing aid. Finally after a recent argument with my wife over a miscommunication, I went to Ascent Audiology in McLean, VA, the very next day. They tested my hearing thoroughly and explained the test results well. They showed me the various hearing aid options and explained their pro's and con's. They let me try the hearing aids to see how well they worked and how visible they were. Most importantly to me, I walked out of the office wearing a set of hearing aids that immediately improved my relationships in my family and radically improved my communication with coworkers and customers. I previously sensed I was kind of checking out of a lot of conversations at home and work that I simply could not strain hard enough to pick up on. I can now hear much better in all my conversation settings, and feel much more energized and engaged overall at work in particular due to the change. If you are worried about your hearing, make an appointment with this office and Dr. Anzola. From the welcoming reception coffee or bottled water to going out the door, I had a very pleasant and informative experience at this practice. The hearing test is high tech with a soundproof booth and special equipment to measure your hearing range and comprehension. Before all that, the doctor reviews your situation with you and asks you questions to help you make the best possible choice of hearing aid. She clearly explains the technologies (the way the device for tinnitus works is quite different than with assisted hearing) and has hands-on samples which you can look over and insert in your ear to give you a good idea of what you will eventually get. I opted for custom ear molds so I have to wait a couple of weeks for the hearing aids to arrive for final fitting. She also showed me an audiogram (graph of my hearing capability at different frequencies) and explained my moderate hearing loss to me. That was very helpful to understand why I could hear men ok most of the time, but higher voices of some women sometimes would sound muddled to me (high frequency hearing loss in other words.) She and her staff were great. Just check your insurance before you go to see what is covered and if you have a history of ear wax blocking your ear drums, it might be worth a stop at your regular doctor BEFORE the hearing exam to get your ears irrigated and the ear wax flushed out. Dr Thorne was wonderful. She made me feel completely at ease talking about a hearing loss problem I had become increasingly embarrassed about: I found it hard to hear in situations with lots of ambient background noise. I was always shouting at business networking events, and talking too loudly at social gatherings, and had just started to not go to those things...which isn't good because I'm a consultant and I need to go to those events to build my business, and I also like social occasions...but not when I can't hear people. She listened to everything I had to say -- the emotional parts, not just the technical parts, did a hearing assessment, reviewed the results with me, and got me set up with a hearing aid optimized to address the problem all on my first visit. I highly recommend the outstanding professional services of Dr. Anzola and her staff. I've been using the services of Dr. Anzola and her Ascent staff for 6 months starting on 30 January 2012. Before then, I had been wearing inner ear hearing aides for both ears for many years from another firm. I wasn't totally happy with those aides because they had become behind the technology curve. Based on Dr. Anzola's counseling, I changed to Receiver-in-Canal hearing aides which she programmed to the proper hearing system controls. I am totally happy with these aides. I can now select the proper control option according to certain situations -- restaurant/party noises, loudness and softness speaking, theatre/distances, etc. I have been extremely impressed by the excellent performance and credentials of Dr. Anzola and her staff. These have been applied very well. They all have provided professional and knowledgeable services accompanied with patience and understanding to fit the needs of customers. You can tell that Dr. Ana Anzola has a passion for her practice and area of expertise, but also compassion for her patients. She couldn't be nicer as a person, but as a doctor she is all business when it comes to testing, fitting and recommending hearing aid products. I have hearing loss in both ears from decades of scuba diving, hunting and shooting, more on my left than right (being left-handed). It was starting to affect family, social and work gatherings, when I could not hear due to background noise or people speaking at the same time. I also have a very bad case of tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Dr. Anzola was very patient in explaining the issues and options. I ended up getting both in-ear and behind-ear hearing aids, and both work well, though I am more partial to the behind ear ones at the moment. Both sets are tiny, barely visible, if at all, and work well. Highly recommend Starkey SoundLens X Series IIC Hearing Instruments In early January 2012 I purchased a pair of Starkey SoundLens X Series IIC hearing instruments. Per the guidance of Dr. Anzola I followed the CD training program and immediately decided to wear them all day long every day. It didnt take long to become completely comfortable with these instruments. The positive impact in the quality of my life was dramatic. They did more than just amplify sounds. My environment became crisp and clear. I didnt get my 18 year old hearing back, but it was close! I found this product to work remarkably well in modes 1 and 3 in the relatively quiet environment (house, office, etc.) and in large lecture halls, respectively. However, the environment in which I was looking for most improvement was in receptions, noisy restaurants, etc. where there is significant human voice white noise. I give Dr. Anzola my highest recommendation. Prior to hunting for hearing aids, I did extensive research. I knew that finding a skilled, experienced audiologist was crucial. I visited two other audiologists and tried out two brands of hearing aids prior to discovering Dr. Anzola. Dr. Anzola gained my trust immediately. She was not just out to make a sale, but rather she wanted me to find the right hearing aid for me. She was the only one who informed me that BCBS Federal covers up to $2,500 for a pair of hearing aids every three years.
