The ceilings and walls are lined with corks and you are kept warm in the winter by a number of barrel fireplaces. It actually feels like you are in the country. Willunga is really full of a lot of surprises. It is a real trek for me to get there; however I am never disappointed in what it has to offer. Russell's pizza got a massive hype when it first opened. Everyone in town was talking about what an amazing experience it is. They are always booked out with functions and small gatherings of friends, so be sure to call in advance. So what is the Russell's experience? Well, unlike many other venues, we rocked up with an esky full of drinks. Yes, can you see why I felt at home? They have a licence to allow BYO. Obviously you are to drink responsibly, but it really keeps the customers there for the night. The next part of the experience is the staff. They are all so friendly and helpful. They work super hard, but they keep a smile on their faces. They even stopped for a dance with us after our meal. Then there is the pizza. Oh the many pizzas! The bases are perfection. They are home made and rolled out in a sort of long fashion to fit on wooden boards. Toppings are all very creative and fresh. One pizza came out with oysters in the shell. Lovely! The sauce is really flavoursome. You could not really complain about anything. This is a great birthday or small function venue. You can pay a cost per head and you are provided with chef's selection pizzas until you say "no, I can't take it anymore! I will roll home if you keep going!" Russell's really feels like a party at one of my good friends home. I highly recommend this place if you have a birthday or gathering in the future.

Not at all, this modest, but atmospheric bit of Australiana produces pizzas which have few peers, whether you think of Rome, Naples, New York or Adelaide. Light, thin tasty bases, dressed with the best produce in true Italian fashion, not piled high, cooked to perfection in a woodfired oven. Good sizes, although a little pricey, our kids were the best critics, their fussy as most are - not a crumb left! The range has something for everyone, ham & pineapple, napoli, yes they're there, but so are seasonal vegetable, slow cooked turkish lamb, and many others. Just order from the board. Deserts are traditional tarts, panacottas and pies simple - all delicious. Staff are friendly, casual and eager to please, a special desert for the kids was no trouble. The only nitpick is, for a largely BYO restaurant, a $7 ph corkage charge for those drinking their own is a bit steep. It shouldn't put you off, but make sure you budget for it. Anyway, if you're in the neighbourhood, don't miss it!

Let me tell you how impressed we were by Pizza Kneads ... we visited during the Yelp Willunga…read moreWonders tour, and booked a table straight away for the Tuesday after ;) THAT'S how impressed we were!! We were impressed that they were open on a Tuesday night to start with (since that's our usual dining out night!), and when we arrived we were the only ones there! Actually, we were the only ones there the whole time - which is great because we were able to chat to the owner Greg, who is truly inspirational and passionate about his business. I just hope that they can stay open on Tuesdays! We started off by ordering a delicious Tempranillo (H&Y is the building in front of Pizza Kneads), and Greg brought out delicious local olives. I then ordered 'The Clarice' (yes - it's a lamb pizza!), and my partner ordered a Margherita (by which she judges all pizza shops). Both were absolutely delicious, and my partner declared it one of the best Margheritas she had ever tried! The ambiance is lovely (the oven is aesthetically pleasing as well as useful!), and there is a wide variety of all the materials you need to make pizza at home, as well as some other Willunga produce (like olive oil and herbs). All in all, we were super-impressed by this place, and already can't wait to go back and try more pizzas!! Oh - and they do gluten-free bases too ;)

Yes, Pizza Kneads is tucked away behind Hither and Yon, and yes it's 'way down south' in delightful Willunga; but that's no reason not to go! In my opinion every south Aussie should visit Willunga once a month anyway, so whilst you're there eat pizza at Pizza Kneads. It really couldn't be more simple. We chose to share 2 pizzas between us; a succulent lamb one, and an incredibly novel BLT one. Both were totally delectable. The base is thin but not overly crispy; the toppings are lavish enough so as not to overfill; but the thing that leaps out and smacks you square in the face is the freshness. The ingredients are SO fresh that one of them pinched my bottom! Yes - that fresh. If you add that to a wonderful outdoor eating area; staff as friendly as can be; reasonable prices and another reason to visit Willunga - I need make no further comment. They certainly satisfy my Pizza Kneads ......

We were greeted by the H&Y crew as we entered a gorgeous old building which apparently used to be a butcher shop! Malcolm and Richard were our hosts who greeted us with a smile and a table filled to the brim with tasting 'apparatus', namely 4 glasses, each filled with a little sample; an empty glass to make our own blend; a couple of handily placed 'spittoons' for the errr.... 'unwanted wine'; a scattering of measuring jugs in case we wanted to get fastidious with our measurements and a heap of encouragement to boot! Much fun was had experimenting with different blends of Merlot and Shiraz etc, enabling us to come up with the perfect blend to suit no-one's palate but our own! Although I didn't participate in this activity (as I was too busy trying out the pizzas at the back of the shop in 'Pizza Kneads'), I did join in some of the tastings and was deeply impressed by the nuance of flavours and blends attainable from a simple bit of trial and error! Another awesome venue in what's rapidly becoming my fave little SA town! We were intending on coming back to Willunga to spend a Saturday wandering around the markets and sampling the local fare - I feel that a week wouldn't now be long enough!
