Liz and the other yoga instructors at Advanced Health Massage and Yoga have helped me find a new way of stretching and relaxing that has changed my life! I'm a 51 year old, male runner with ridiculously tight hamstrings, hips, and IT bands like every other older (male and female) runner I know. After a stress fracture side-lined me for 6 months, my physical therapist told me that if I wanted to run for years to come with minimal or no injuries, that I would need to do yoga. My PT warned me against impersonal gyms, killer to follow DVD's, and large centers. I would need specialized, hands-on training from a smaller, more patient studio. Liz, and the other instructors at Advanced, have been perfect for my needs, and the strength and flexibility I've seen in just three months has already helped me lower my 5K race times and I sleep and wake up more comfortably. They mix just the right amount of meditation and stretching in a quiet and calming atmosphere. It was also hard to beat their $20 for 20 days new member special. I went 8 times over the 20 days for only $20! Of course by then I was ready to sign up for the 10x card which makes the prices of a session only $12.00 Again, hard to beat. Prior to opening her center, Liz worked for several years as a massage therapist in a local chiropractic practice and offers shiatsu and cranio facial massage, and what I would term sports therapeutic massage. Lots of stretching out and aligning my body correctly, and solving issues with areas that are just chronically sore and bowed in from stress, like my shoulders and neck. Cummings Center is HUGE, but once inside the building it is easy to find the right place. Olga met me and went through my expectations (which was great) and then told me how the hour would go. It took me about 10 minutes to relax and then before I knew it my hour was up. Olga told me what she felt about specific areas of stress and struggle. They were identical to how I had been feeling, and nothing I told her in the beginning. She gave me some things to focus on, affirmations to help me through the day, etc. After three weeks I realize how this really has helped me to work through some blocks. I have been having some upper back pain for quite a while, and I decided that I would try this before hitting up the Doctor or doing anything more drastic. I had Plamen for my 60 -minute deep tissue massage, and that man is the best thing that ever happened to my back he gets five starts (my girlfriend also had a 60 minute session with him and said he is awesome). The decor is very eastern(ish) but I found the whole experience very relaxing and Plamen is a master of his craft. My back and shoulders have not felt this good in quite some time. The impact of the Feldenkrais ATMs and teachings over the last 6 months has had a profound impact on my nervous system and is changing my life. My nervous system was so dis-regulated that it was difficult to find a practice I could tolerate until I discovered Feldenkrais when I read Norman Doidge's, "The Brain's Way of Healing." I loved the way it fit with what I had learned about nervous system healing. I eventually found my way to the Movement & Creativity Library which has allowed me to explore different lessons that I wouldn't have thought I "needed." Almost all have worked to calm my nervous system and bring so much more awareness to where I hold chronic tension in my body. I do 2 ATMs a day, listen to the talks, and incorporate some of the shorter practices when I can. I feel like I am a walking miracle.

While lying down on a blanket in a darkened room with strangers might seem strange or intimidating... Tiffany put us right at ease. The group class consisted of her talking calmly and helping us notice things about our bodies ("Is your right hand lying differently on the floor from your left hand?"), and then moved on to gentle motions with a sustained emphasis on awareness. At the end of my first class, I felt taller and calmer, and as I continued taking classes for the next few months I saw great improvements (my spine was straighter, I didn't wake up with so many aches in my back and hips, I was way less clumsy). I eventually let my Y membership elapse, but I missed Feldenkrais - Tiffany was my favorite teacher there, so I looked her up, and am now taking one-on-one lessons with her. Rather, I've only had one so far, and it was AMAZING. I literally had to adjust the rear-view mirror in my car, because I was sitting so much taller after the lesson. It became clear during our first phone conversation that Stephanie is on an authentic mission to bring the topics of addiction and recovery out from under the veils of shame and secrecy, so that true healing can occur through honest and open exploration of these difficult and prickly hurdles that so many of us are trying to navigate. Stephanie presented her "Building Health In Recovery" workshop at my studio in June, which I attended. The workshop was fantastic! Stephanie's down to earth, non-judgmental and supportive nature made it very easy for the workshop participants to open up throughout the workshop. Her knowledge on the topics of addiction and recovery is vast, but her way of sharing information made it all very accessible and non-threatening. Stephanie tells it like it is, which is a refreshing approach around topics that many tend to shy away from. We all learned a lot about the stages of addiction and recovery, as well as many invaluable ways that Yoga and nutrition can help urge us along our path to total health in Mind, Body & Spirit. By the end of the workshop, there was a real sense of community forming among the participants. The forum had offered a safe place for all of us to share, learn, and start developing more healthy and positive approaches to our struggles regardless of where we all were within the stages of these struggles. This is where Jackie comes in, an accomplished dancer and fitness professional. The Zumba classes at Bodyfit just get better and better. Jackie incorporates bollywood, various latin dances, hip hop, swing, and other dance styles to keep things interesting. I don't get bored (this is a feat in itself for me) and I really like that Jackie cycles high intensity songs interspersed with low intensity to keep that metabolism going. I have learned so much about dance, it never feels like a workout, and it is super affordable.

I'm going to spend the month taking each of her classes and figuring out which ones I want to continue. I find her Zumba class very challenging, but I also really liked her kickboxing class.
