Every staff member from the Clinical Director, Isabelle, the house manager , Meryann, the nurse , Massie, both therapists , David and Ben, and all of the MHT's treated me with kindness and ensured that my needs were met. I had a problem with my insurance and Sharon, the Chief Clinical Director, got involved to ensure I received the treatment I needed. The daily schedule is so well curated so you don't really feel like you are in therapy all day but you are really working on yourself and your recovery in a meaningful way. I really enjoyed the therapist led groups that were thought provoking and allowed for open discussion/sharing. There was so much education but it wasn't a bunch of worksheets that you filled out or read from something akin to a textbook. All of the MHT's I encountered were so compassionate and a lot of them are also pursuing careers as therapists themselves which almost felt like a cheat code. You could go on daily walks, to the park, and had numerous opportunities to get out of the house for supervised excursions. I want to address some of the negative reviews. I didn't have any of the experiences that others have but the restrictions and rules that are in place may at times feel onerous or arbitrary but they exist for a reason. The staff is willing to work with you if you are asking for something reasonable. I had numerous requests that were granted and when others weren't I understood why. If you need an elevated level of care, I highly recommend La Ventana.

For nearly a month before arriving, I completed multiple assessments and discussed my medications with staff, especially Shannon. I was told my medications were approved. I also repeatedly disclosed that I'm bringing my emotional support dog and asked whether her paperwork was acceptable. I was reassured that my dog and medications would not be a problem. I was transparent that my dog was 11 months old and still working on not jumping. I asked about bringing a collapsible crate and was told it was a good idea. Shannon also recommended that I delay checking in until I obtained a shock collar to help prevent issues. I followed that advice and spent time and money preparing. The next morning Carla told me the shock collar could not be used and that the crate I had been encouraged to bring as well was not allowed either. She also told me my dog had to be picked up immediately because she was an emotional support animal rather than a service animal. I was told I could no longer take multiple medications I had previously discussed with staff and understood to be approved. I have taken some of these medications since fifth grade, and I had specifically reviewed them before admission. I felt completely blindsided. These issues should have been resolved before I checked in. I repeatedly disclosed my needs, asked questions, and followed the instructions I was given. Had I received accurate information beforehand, I could have made an informed decision about whether La Ventana was appropriate for me. My interactions with Carla made an already devastating situation/decision significantly worse or more frightening. What disturbed me most was her lack of empathy, compassion, or even basic human sensitivity while I was visibly falling apart in front of her. As I sat there crying and experiencing back-to-back panic attacks and going unconscious from hyperventilating multiple times because of all of this, Carla showed no concern for the emotional distress I was experiencing. The worst part, she appeared to have a smirk on her face while I was crying and struggling to cope with what was happening. It was so hurtful and disturbing to see the person responsible for overseeing the house witness someone in such intense emotional pain and distress be so dismissive with zero compassion. I came to La Ventana desperately seeking help, hoping to find a safe environment where I could begin healing from years of trauma, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and BPD. Instead, I found myself in a situation that left me crying, panicking, and losing consciousness because of Carla's incompetence. No one seeking mental health treatment should have to feel humiliated, dismissed, or emotionally abandoned while they are actively experiencing a mental health crisis. I left after just one day feeling more traumatized, frightened, and distrustful than when I arrived, and Carla was 100% the reason why. Please stay away from La Ventana. If you're considering La Ventana as for mental health or trauma treatment, run. Run fast as f*ck in the opposite direction. I would not recommend this facility to anyoneee, not even my worst enemy. I came here desperately seeking help, spent nearly a month communicating with staff to make sure my needs would be accommodated, followed their instructions, and paid $5,200 only to leave less than 24 hours later feeling more traumatized than when I arrived. I experienced conflicting information about my medications, my emotional support animal, and even preparations staff specifically encouraged me to make. This experience was an absolute scam, traumatizing and I DEEPLY REGRET trusting this facility with my mental health and well-being. These people tell you anything you want to hear to get your money and don't even discuss financials with you until the day before you're being admitted. RUN!

Also, I found out about this place from Summit Malibu ( see my review ) (incidentally, Some of the pictures on the website are not of the sober living but pictures from the owners actual residence. Also, we're not clear on one of the owners actual last name, who also shared with me that she pays her nephew to go to traffic school for her. So much for an Honest program). It sounds a little nit picky but, it all ads up. My one week there - The mens house has a ' flop house ' kinda vibe. The Oaks is comprised of 3 houses: Mens house, Womens House, Co-Ed house. Price per month: $2,500 per person. Slamming doors, loud people and strange behavior from residents, the managers and the owners abound. . 1 - Wreckless Endangerment The owners had us come to the beach (basically to watch the husband and wife owners of the 3 houses kite surf for the day) Afterwards we piled into the wife's new Tesla suv for her to return us to our respective houses. She proceeded to race through the nook and cranny roads that connect Malibu to the Thousand Oaks area, crossing the double yellow lines to pass traffic until getting on the 101 northbound freeway where she put the car in auto drive while texting at 80mph with a car filled with clients who have less than 20 days of sobriety ?!?! I had asked her NOT to drive like that. She made it sound like I can't handle fast speeds?? ( REALLY?) what of the lives of everyone in your new Tesla lady?? 2 - Public humiliation I wasn't feeling well and left the 7am mandatory AA meeting a few minutes early, minutes later the owner pulled into the driveway to yell at me in public in front of the girls and the entire neighborhood threatening to ' kick me out of the house' ( sober livings think they can simply kick people to street even after you've established residence by receiving mail at the location) which is illegal in the state of california but, don't tell them that. 3 - Car Accident The manager of the Womens sober living ( which for some reason is on the actual property of the owners) has been in 2 car accidents, endangering the lives of the clients in the vehicle. 4 - Fraternizing The male manager of the womens co-ed ( who later was simply transferred to manage the mens sober living as punishment ) was caught dating two of the girls in the girls house ( also caught kissing one of the clients in the driveway by the owners on one occasion). imagine if this was your daughter? Meds not safe 5 - new manager of the co-ed house (Darren) often forgets to lock the medications closet, leaving it wide open for anyone to have access. On 2 occasions he locked the keys inside of the medications locker only to be seen using a phillips screwdriver to take the lock off to get into the med closet which houses meds for over 9 people in that house. 6 - Levels ( very dangersous) In my over 20 years in the program I've never heard of Levels. typically if someone in the house relapses or is using, they're removed from the house and for good reason. it only takes one person to bring drugs/alcohol into the sober environment to bring the house down. At The Oaks, if you're caught drinking or using you get Levels, meaning: if you're caught using, and you're given a urine test, you have to bring the 'level' of use down to prove you're no longer using. (Levels also comes down to how much the owners like you - if you're liked - they'll let you stay - if they don't, they'll find any excuse to get rid of you and keep the reminder of your $2,500. Clients at risk for theft - the manager of the womens house confiscated a versachi purse from one of the wealthier women ( same manager who got into 2 car accidents with clients in the car.

Colin is there for you on the couch after dinner for a good spiritual talk. His meals on Sundays are phenomenal. So good infact that I regularly return to the house on Sundays for "family dinners."
