Ismael is amazing, and this has been one of my best hair experiences in the city.

Have you heard that one about the woman who claimed a haircut changed her life? Well, it's no joke. Ismael, owner of Healing Cuts, is a magician. He is highly-skilled, warm, patient, and visionary, if you need some vision! He is also collaborative and a great listener--asking me questions throughout and letting me know what he was thinking before making cuts. I have tried for years to get my hair cut in this style but no stylist or barber could get it to work with my fine, wavy hair. Well, it appears Ismael is an alchemist, integrating the science, engineering, art, and therapeutic nature of cutting hair. He is also one of the warmest and immediately likable people I've met in recent memory. The whole experience made my day and made me love San Francisco again. Also, I have never in my life so looked forward to going back* to get my haircut. Usually I'm dreading it and it feels like a "to do" list thing I want to put off; Now I'm clocking the weeks to go back. I can't recommend it highly enough. Ya'll should support this place. Not only is Ismael enchanting, creative, and highly-skilled, he is also a right-on guy, an LGBTQ immigrant of color, an activist for righteous causes like SF Women Against Rape, and an overall conscientious and community-minded person. He's building community through his shop and wants folks of all genders across cultures to come and feel welcome. Last, he's super affordable for SF! All signs point to Healing Cuts. I don't usually post reviews on here but I got a haircut from here recently from Ismael and I just want to say by far the best service I have ever received! He stayed late with me to make sure my hair was perfect all while having an amazing conversation. I have never gotten as good of a haircut by someone who was not just passionate about doing it but understanding the needs of my hair. I've been getting haircuts at various barbers in the Castro for many years, and I've never had an experience like this one. This place is the best. Ismael DeLuna is a positive and energetic guy who has created a great environment for haircuts in the Castro. They may not be cheap, but they're worth every cent. Greatest haircut experience of my life! Well priced at $40 for a better cut and conversation than a $100 shop. Ismael is a transcendent individual. The shampoo at the end was heavenly. Disappointing. First visit the haircut and bread trim were great. I was very thankful to find someone trimming a beard also very accommodating because his payment system wasn't working and allowed me to come back and pay. Although after this interaction Service went down hill. Second appointment I had scheduled a week or so in advance I arrived on time and he was running 15 minutes behind, I had to kinda stick to my schedule. Not 15 minutes late when I scheduled an appointment ahead of time. In addition, I was hesitant bc I was originally charged like $35-45 for a haircut and beard trim, but not really even 30 days later the website wanted me to input a credit card number for what appeared to be a charge for about $60-70 for both. That makes no sense but I booked anyways bc I text the barber and he's like we will adjust the amount when you come get your haircut. So what are your real fees? Today I went to book an appointment at 2PM bc it showed available on the scheduler. Although I couldn't put in a payment. I text the barber and he says that he's off today which is how come I couldn't input anything. You're off but your schedule is open for new appointments. How does this make sense? So In our text he asks me for my availability for Wednesday and I give him my availability, he then texts me two times that are not in the window I gave him. Already compromising I try to push out a time that I'm not available by 30 minutes. And his response is like, CNN is not 30 minutes. Ugh I don't really know you that well for sneakiness and I think I'll pass and find a new barber. It's too much work to get my haircut here. read more

As a queer woman with a barber style hair cut, I felt so comfortable getting a pompadour with fade by Ismael a few weeks ago. He spent quite a bit of time talking with me about what I wanted. And he really took the time to give me what I wanted. I've not gotten my hair cut at a barber before this and I loved the hot towel treatment on my face. I'll be be back when I'm ready for a trim! Overall, great experience! I came in on a Saturday morning to get a haircut before a holiday party that night. My haircut was at 11 in the morning and I made an appointment the night before. I ended up reaching right about 11 but someone else had walked in, so I unfortunately ended up having to wait until 11:30 before I got my haircut. However, everything after that point was more than redeeming - Ismael gave me a discount to make up for my time spent waiting, and also gave me an extra service with shampoo and beard trim. As for the haircut, he was phenomenal! He kept a good conversation and gave me exactly the haircut I was looking for (I do short on the sides and long in the front). I even got a few complements from friends and coworkers about my haircut in following few days, which attests to the quality of the haircutting.
