We reserved a Yurt. It was fabulous not having to set up our tents. It had 3 beds in it. If you want a fire you need a fire permit. Fortunately it was too hot for a fire. It was very sandy due to the river flooding sometime back. There's a nearby beach that you can walk to. However it was hot.

We had site 7. At first, I was very worried because the site looked small and right next to the restrooms. Aft3r reading past reviews, some reported odor coming from the restrooms and how it gets loud. We did not experience such a thing. We have seen the camp host replace and take care of the restrooms multiple times. Some said the site was small. We had two tents. One 10 person and another 3 person tent. They both fit under shade. Very spacious site although it's quite right next to site 8. And lucky us, they had a toddler who cried at night time and adults who got there quite late after quiet time. Set up, late dinner and late chat that didn't end until past 12! We heard their every convo so we're pretty sure they also heard us. Since we're not riverfront, we decided to just go find another spot down river. It wasn't busy this weekend so finding one wasn't an issue at all.

Headquarters is where our friends come to camp and have fun before and after river rafting. We have many a story about this great locale. Some can be told and others... "What Happens at the River, Stays at the River!". i'm sure that we coined the phrase before Vegas did. (wink wink) The river was icy cold yet spectacular. I was mesmerized by the sound of the river surging. If we would have put in our raft at Headquarters, we would have hit tequila Chute. We only wanted to do that if another raft was around. We drove down a bit and hit Kernville/Powerhouse Run (Class II-III): The Powerhouse run is the classic beginner run on the Upper Kern. Ewings, Powerhouse, and Big Daddy Rapids will either be a fun challenge or put the fear of God into beginner paddlers. Boaters often choose to run this short 2 mile section several times in a day. The water was icy cold. There are stores nearby if your husband forgot the rum and if you run out of ice. We had 3 sites together. I was in site 21 across from the river. Near river, bear boxes, restrooms and trees are aplenty. The fire-pits all still have their grates. Headquarters is our place. We love it. I've stayed at a ton of sites and campgrounds up and down the Kern. All of them were operated by the US Forest Service. They're all no frills, super basic sites with pit toilets. If you want amenities go stay at one of the privately operated campgrounds in Kernville for three times the price. I'm giving this site 4 stars because although it's super basic, it's right next to the Kern which is majestic and worth 3 stars alone.

Had a great weekend with the kids at this campground. We were able to score a site on a first come first serve basis.. We stayed on site 32 , our site was right beside a stream/kern river and we enjoyed our experience very much. The host, Ken was very friendly. Overall a wonderful experience, would love to come back again!

Headquarters Campground is just a couple miles outside of the town of Kernville, literally riverside and has water & latrines. The sites are spacious, and each site has a table and fire pit. We walked up on a Thursday afternoon, but Friday night it filled quickly. I believe they accept reservations as well. The campsite is very basic. There are no sinks or showers, so I wouldn't stay at this particular site for more than 2 nights. Some of the sites were full of litter, but the Parks staff cleaned it up when he did rounds to collect fees ($18/night). The ranger said we were allowed to gather, but since this site is right on the river, there is hardly any wood, and mostly just sand. We had to pick up a few bundles from the market, which is just a couple minutes into town. About an hour north on the highway is Trail of 100 Giants, which was also fun to visit.

Ask the Community - Headquarters Campground

Read that there's tons of squirrels and a few reviews mentioning "bears?" What is the actual situation with the bears as there wasn't anything specific.

The squirrel situation is not that bad right now. I've camped at this site a bunch and have never seen bears. They do have bear lockers that you definitely should store your food in just to be safe. The closest we've come to seeing bears was when we… Read more

TLDR; Great time, nice campsites, friendly staff, clean bathroom and showers Check in is at 3pm but we got caught up in some traffic on the way there and couldn't arrive until 6:45. Got an email and text message with a picture of where our envelope with our information would be that contained the gate code, campsite, and a map of the campground. Very nice. We pulled in and as I was grabbing the envelope a man named Scot who was working there greeted me and asked if I needed any help. Told him that it's our first time here and he offered to show us to our campsite and lead us in his golf cart. When we pulled into the campsite it was clean and the ground was even raked! Which was perfect for us to immediately start setting up our tent. Even the fire pit was raked and clean, there was shade galore which my wife with sensitive skin greatly appreciated. Full cell service with T-Mobile Noticed that the bench at our site could use some TLC, looked like someone put too hot of a pot on it and burned a pretty decent divot into it and it was leaning. Still useable and not a deal breaker for us. There were 2 water spouts to fill up the bucket we used to put out our fire and clean our dishes very close by our site with good pressure. The river was a stones throw away from our campsite which provided great white noise to fall asleep to. One of the rules is that Quiet time is at 10pm. I've been camping elsewhere with the same rule but never have I've seen it enforced unless you call and complain. Staff would drive by around 9:30 on the golf cart, I assume to see who is still playing music, and then again at 10. Which was great. They didn't announce the rule or even say anything as they drove by, but just making their presence known was very professional and reassuring. Since we didn't get to check in properly we had to go back up to the main office/ general store to submit a registration card, that was in the envelope I picked up, to finish checking in. The woman checking us in was nice, friendly, quick, and efficient. She suggested we stop by McNally's further up about 40min drive if we were looking for something to do or eat. 11/10 suggestion. It was all n all a great time. We will be back. Worth the money.

I personally felt that they were treating my group and I like we were stupid or something. We had a big wasp problem at our campsite and though they did help us by putting up a trap, they acted like it was completely up to us to fix their problem. That only happened one night but the wasps did resurface the next morning so we left as soon as possible. We also had a big skunk problem at our site. We couldn't relax at the campfire because the skunks would come up to us every couple of minutes and we would have to shoo them away. They would also rummage through our stuff which was covered and put away to our best extent. They thankfully didn't mess with the tent but they did spray a bit when we were trying to sleep. This was both nights. If you're someone who is willing to look past that and persevere definitely try this place it is so worth it. I would maybe come back, as long as I wouldn't have to deal with the wasps again lol. I will say the restrooms and showers were very clean so that does encourage me to not be shy on coming back.

She then directed us to another employee to finalize our reservation. Unfortunately, that interaction was disappointing. After a three-hour drive, it was discouraging to be met with a condescending attitude. We needed to update our reservation to reflect a different number of adults. We had no issue paying the additional fee, but the employee's tone and insistence that we pay immediately came across as rude, as though she assumed we were unwilling to pay. Thankfully, the staff member who had originally assisted us stepped in and explained that we had just arrived and were not objecting to the additional charge. Later that evening, around 8:30 p.m., a staff member approached our campsite and asked us to lower our music. While we understand and respect campground quiet hours, our music was not loud. We did have several children with us who were playing, but we were under the impression that quiet hours began at 10:00 p.m., and we fully complied with those rules. The manner in which the staff member addressed us felt unnecessarily rude. What made the situation more frustrating was that several other campsites remained much louder throughout the evening. We could clearly hear nearby groups singing, laughing, and playing music well past 10:00 p.m., with some not lowering their music until around 11:00 p.m. Despite bringing this inconsistency to the staff's attention, I did not feel that my concerns were addressed. The campground is pet-friendly, which we appreciate. However, there was frequent barking from dogs throughout the night. Normally, this would not bother us, but it seemed inconsistent that our campsite was singled out for noise while other ongoing disturbances, including loud music and barking dogs, were not addressed. Finally, the restrooms were consistently dirty during our stay. They appeared to be cleaned infrequently, and there seemed to be little urgency in maintaining their cleanliness. Overall, while we appreciated the friendliness of the staff member who initially welcomed us, the inconsistent enforcement of campground rules, the unprofessional attitude from another employee, and the lack of restroom maintenance negatively affected what could have been an enjoyable stay.
