Ive been to many other therapists before, and I honestly feel that Dr Silverman is different.
First of all, I feel like she is actually paying attention each and every session. (I've had other therapists who just sit there, nod their head, and say a handful of generic therapy phrases every couple minutes.) I get frustrated and quit therapy pretty soon after I start usually. But Ive continued to see Dr Silverman.
Dr Silverman never seems to forget what I talked about in previous sessions, and she can tie themes together from what Ive told her. I feel like she has given me a few different perspectives about my situation that I never considered before, nor would have I figured out on my own. So therapy is definately more effective than talking with a friend or family member in this case.
I also thought that Dr Silverman worked harder than most therapists and larger clinics to help me figure out my insurance situation, which is a total nightmare. She called my insurance company herself, and then called me back and explained in normal english what my benefits are. Other therapists have their secretary figure out insurance, and half the time the secretaries dont know what they are talking about. Also some therapist dont even seem to want to take insurance. And I dont know about you, but I can't pay $150 to someone once a week. I need to use my insurance or I can't go to therapy at all. So affordability and willing to work with my insurance is another thing I liked right off the bat with Dr Silverman's office.
You can also get in to see Dr Silverman more often than other therapists in the area. For a while, I needed to be seen twice a week. Other therapists seem to take so many patients at once that they can only see patients once a week, or more typicaly once every two or three weeks at the most.
Her waiting area is also usually quiet, spacious, with not a lot of people waiting to be seen. Other places Ive been have either a tiny waiting room with chairs packed in or a larger room with tons of other people (adults, children, and clearly disturbed people) waiting in the room with you. So Dr Silverman's waiting area is actually pretty comfortable and "normal" as far as mental health places go.
My only complaint is that sometimes Dr Silverman runs about 10-15 minutes late. However, I've waited 30-35 minutes for other therapists or psychiatrists before, so I guess waiting 10-15 minutes is a big improvement. I know random things happen in a day that can make a therapist or psychiatrist late, so 10-15 minutes is really not a big deal.
Besides that, I am very pleased with my experience seeing Dr Silverman. I highly recommend her. read more
