I've lived in Seattle for 10 years and this is one of my favorite apartment buildings, units and management teams I've experienced. I appreciate the building doesn't try to be something it's not. No fancy rooftop you hardly use, underwhelming gym or impersonal vibe that you pay a 30% premium for. What Hawthorne does offer is competitively priced large units with great balconies, a central location that are updated and nice floor plans. It's important for renters to understand what they like, and don't like, in choosing where they live. Here are my honest highlights:
The building/location: Pine and Bellevue is about as central as it gets in the city. With that comes walking distance to just about everything: restaurants, cafes, shops, bars, light rail, highway access etc. I like the building is situated on Bellevue, not Pine, which keeps it off the main drag just enough. That all said, it's Capitol Hill so renters should understand every walk of life passes by outside: yuppies, hippies, homeless, students, techies, the crazy man yelling at no-one etc. The lobby is modern, clean and updated. Packages are delivered right to your apartment door! I park on the street and (surprisingly) not an issue. But I don't drive to work every day. The building has a nice garage, but you can find cheaper parking spots nearby. I wish the building and units had keyless entry but boo-hoo I'll survive.
The unit: I'm near the top facing the back. I chose this because I'm a light sleeper and the front (facing Bellevue) sits on a bus-line. I think some units hear the rooftop of Sugar Hill during the summer but my unit faces the opposite direction. In the summer, there's some audible music/loud talking, but really, the units are REALLY quiet. Plus, huge kitchens, counter space, cupboards for days, bedrooms big enough for a king bed, nice storage, W/D... did I mention the sweet patios for your grills!!?? Also, I'm a fan of the accent wall and high ceilings. The back units have nice trees to look at. It's also facing an alley, so you'll hear the occasional bum, leaf-blower and garbage truck. I think renters get a solid bang for the buck since units are newly updated, with lot's of space, clean, pretty well updated and modern feeling. The bathrooms are on the smaller side with very little storage. So renters should be creative and consider purchasing a vanity unit.
The management: Hands down, an A+ team. Peter and Elizabeth are super friendly, attentive, leave nice holiday cards on your door, allow me to steal candy from the bowl out front :) Whenever I've had an issue with the unit, maintenance has been quick to fix. They were extremely flexible with my move-in date and I greatly appreciate it.
If you're searching for a well maintained building with big units, high ceilings, great balconies in a super central location that are cheaper than all the brand new buildings (by a significant amount) this is a solid option. read more
