While visiting Terre Haute, the first park I visited was Deming Park, and I knew I would return…read more The park has multiple amenities, including a full disc golf course, a swimming pool (during season), horse shoes, tennis, the Clark-Landsbaum Holly Arboretum, several art installations, a mini train "the Spirit of Terre Haute", and, oh yeah, a very cool playground. There are 177 acres at this park and that allows visitors to find quiet places as well as the hustle/bustle of the playground area. Shelters are available throughout the park and with many paved roads winding through the park, access to the shelters is easy. The playground was busy with families playing on the multiple pieces of equipment. I liked that there was plenty of shade close to the playground and that the picnic tables have roofs on them. During the season, a mini-train ride is available for a small fee. Just look for the colorful mural by Becky Hochhalter painted on the train shelter to know where to board. (Tickets are available at the nearby Torner Center during the season). There is also a nice garden near the playground entrance called "Jackie's Garden". It features a bronze sculpture of a seated little girl who is watching butterflies. The arboretum is a plant garden dedicated to preserving the varieties of holly. The entire hillside is covered with mature plants and each has been identified with markers to assist visitors. Nearby, a 14' tall stainless steel sculpture called "On the Wings of Flight" by Simonis (2015) can be found too! The park is a great place to spend some time if you are wanting to get outdoors and play. Review #892

There is a train that goes around a small track for $1.25 each passenger close to the playground. Haven't checked out the restrooms for cleanliness but they have them here and a water fountain in case you forgot to pack drinks. Lots of covered picnic benches great for a family picnic. There Is a community pool open in the summer close to the playground too. It's $2.75 for kids and $3 for adults. They have a diving board and water splash area for the younger ones. I wasn't able to see if the pool has a baby pool as it's not open until noon.

Fishing is allowed for those having the proper licences. For everyone else, the park has a shelter and covered picnic tables, a great paved hiking path that loops around the lake, and a small playground on the west side of the park. On the road that runs just north of Rose-Hulman (Old Maple Ave), a stretch of land has been set…read moreaside by the Parks Department as a wetlands. The wetlands are ideal for Rose-Hulman biology students to collect data and do studies on the local wildlife. The park does have adequate parking and a trail that works its way around the ponds. However, be aware that because it is a wetland, the trails flood out so the amount of trail you can actually walk is limited by your footwear and safety. My walk was a short one due to the recent rains in the area. What I did see is that it's hard to tell this is a man-made wetland since it looks very natural. A smaller pond near the parking lot had grown over with aquatic vegetation (referred to as pond scum). A wooded area to the west was also flooded and you could hear the continuous chirping of small frogs. Wildflowers bloom along the trail as well. The small pond actually is connected to the larger lake which is frequented by birds and also has some fish, but I didn't see anyone fishing during my visit. The park also has a trail that starts by the parking lot and heads west to the neighboring Hawthorn Park & Campground. Maybe if I could have walked farther around the trails, I would have gained a greater appreciation for the variety of wildlife. But with the success of the growing trees and shrubs, it was hard to see the main wetland area from the open trail. Review #2690

I visited Terre Haute's Collett Park the same year that Liberty and Abbie were killed in Delphi. As a lot of my activism is in the area of violence prevention, it was a meaningful event and I ended up visiting Delphi on this tour. However, only a couple days before my event started young Cameron Hoopingarner was killed in Terre Haute. To honor his memory, I gathered with a few supporters to do a mile in his memory inside Collett Park. The park, first build in 1883, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It includes an indoor rental facility, outdoor shelters, restroom facilities, a playground, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, and football/soccer fields. This park reminds me of some of Indy's true "neighborhood" parks as it's in a residential area and has lots of mature trees. There is an easy pathway around the entire park that is wheelchair friendly - one of the reasons I picked it for my event. Officially, Collett Park has the Collett Park Pathway, a 1.6 mile extension of the Heritage Trail. This is the actual trail I followed throughout my event, though it's not particularly well marked as an official trail. The land for the park was donated by Josephus Collett, a railroad magnate and philanthropist. The park is only about 1.4 miles from the Indiana State University campus and the trip is paved the entire way. This is certainly not one of Terre Haute's fancier parks - it's older and rather simple in presentation. However, I really loved the park and appreciated those from Terre Haute who joined me on this day.

The only odd thing about the park is that there is only one way to drive into the park: the entrance is on the southwest corner making the intersection a 5-way stop with a sharp turn if you are coming from the north or east. In…read morethe wedge between Ohio St and Broadway, the space is mostly open lawn with pull in parking (free) on Ohio St. The west end of the park has a new playground that targets smaller kids with a small fortress that includes places to climb and a slide. A couple animal themed stand alone pieces are there as well. Though there aren't any shade trees yet, the park has a couple benches that have built in shade for those who need to take a break from the sun. To the east is an picnic area, but it currently only had one table available and it was without any shade/shelter. Hopefully, the funding will continue to improve this location with some tree plantings, additional picnic/shelter areas, and possibly some restrooms (even portable would be an improvement.) Our daughter is graduating this weekend from DePauw university. We made a reservation for 2 rooms…read moreover a year ago. I feel bad that it took me this long to write a review. This is our 4th stay with the Doc's Inn and each stay was always amazing. The building is old and creaky but that gives it the charm. If you're looking for square and plum walls, perfect floors and doors this is not your spot. But if you want some old world charm and want to feel that you're living in your grandmother's doll house this is your spot. The furniture and china also match the overall theme. Most rooms still have a window air conditioner but we don't usually use them. On this trip our room has access to the 2nd floor roof deck. Some rooms have a king sized bed and others have smaller ones like full, so be sure to ask when you reserve. The staff are really awesome people. Katelyn and her mom are really so hospitable. It is such a pleasant stay and the conversations are great. Finally, these folks put the "breakfast" in bed and breakfast. So far we had a great rice porridge with a slice of roast beef, a green chimichurri, some sliced fried garlic, smoked tomatoes, and a fried egg. Our second breakfast was some smoked brisket with fried eggs. Then we had a homemade biscuit, bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and my daughter had the yogurt parfait. Also each morning there is always something fresh baked to nibble on. The food is amazing and we are always happy when we are smart enough to reserve early. As my youngest graduates we feel great pride and happiness but also a sense of loss for some of the great places, like docs inn, and the great people of Greencastle we will miss.

This is a beautiful restored Victorian that has four unique bedrooms. Visit the website for pictures and explanations, but the Doc's Inn is truly amazing. Kaitlyn, the chef, or Janna, or another stand-in, will provide you with the most amazing and unique breakfast experience that you will find in any bed and breakfast. I highly encourage you to check out their website and book your next visit to the area here!
