Dana Hawley met with me in 2020, and gave me a verbal price for the scope of work, stating he would give me a contract for signature. He not only did not do that, after I had requested it four times, his crew came to my place, in July of 202, did work which had to be re-done, some of which included: not leaving enough space between custom- ordered cabinets they installed so they were scratched, (we reinstalled them - trying to hide his crew's mistake), someone on his crew fell through my kitchen floor to the sealed bedroom below and they didn't repair it nor tell me about it (to this day I still am not sure what happened), they broke a thousand dollar in - drawer microwave installing it, they left the TV/internet cable that was supposed to be buried under the laminate floor, but by far the worst to happen was that he billed me 80 hours for a demo that we did prior to his arrival, which I refused to pay. In the end he sued me - sold my debt to a debt collection agency law firm in socal - for $5,000, and got up on the stand in July 2925, stating we entered into a contract. I couldn't afford an attorney - this was in civil court because in small claims you represent yourself - but I did point out - and got him to admit when I cross - examined him - that there was no contract, which is the law as he is a member of the California state labor board. Therefore I was victorious in this lawsuit - nothing else mattered including the fact he lied about the cabinets arriving damaged and he claimed his team repaired them, or the fact that he ignored four requests for discovery - I wanted to examine the timesheets and all other paperwork related to the job. Discovery obviously never happened but because Business and Professions Code 7159 requires a home improvement contract be in writing, I won. I wasted four years of my life dealing with his unlawful lawsuit - and all over $5,000. read more

We had Dana and team do a deck repair which stopped just shy of a full replacement and saved us big money on permitting. We couldn't be happier with the result nor could we have asked for a better group of guys to work with. Dana is a professional with a capital P, not only in his interactions and stellar communication but the quality of workmanship was outstanding. Matt was the lead on the project and his craftsmanship and attention to detail was evident throughout not to mention his personable nature. The job consisted of a main deck off the front of the house, an entry deck and a cute stone path landing off the front stairs. There was no need to call them back out to address any flaws when the work was complete because there were none. These guys are hardworking good people doing good work. While the deck construction was going on, we were also dealing with several water leaks, one the responsibility of TCPUD and the other leak under the house was on us. I called every local plumber within 20 miles and none were available or willing to do the repair. Understanding the bind we were in, Dana offered to do the work himself and although not a licensed plumber, he had the skills and experience needed to do the job. He quickly diagnosed the issue but completing the job was anything but quick and had NOTHING to do with Dana. PUD has been out three different times to excavate and as I write this review, they still haven't resolved the issue and will be coming back for a fourth round. During this time, Dana was communicating with PUD and providing updates to me regularly, traveling to our place multiple times. Thankfully, Dana was able to figure out how to complete the under house leak repair without waiting for PUD. Dana went above and beyond taking on this plumbing issue and we're grateful the work was completed before winter sets in. I serendipitously met Dana while his team was repairing a subfloor leak under my neighbor's garage. At about that time, in early autumn, I finally saw the vision of where to place a hot tub next to my existing deck. I wanted to extend the deck for a "step-down" experience for the hot tub, but also had free time to do some of the work myself. Winter was approaching. Dana stopped over and we talked through my plans, guided me through the engineering and permitting processes, then was able to squeeze in the construction during a gap with his bigger projects. Our deck was in major need of repair. The support beams were splitting and the concrete foundation was crumbling away. I called Dana and he provided me 2 quotes- 1 to rebuild the entire deck and 1 to just replace the beams and the foundation. We ended up just having him fix the deck instead of replace it. But he did an awesome job!! He kept reminding me all winter to keep the snow shoveled off the deck so it would last the winter until he could come fix it. He was always very responsive and even brought us some duck eggs on his last day on the project. A great guy and company to work with. I highly recommend him and will hire them again when wee actually rebuild our deck and add stairs to it. read more

I was riding my bike and saw that he had a trailer full of trash and was on his way to the dump. I found Hawley construction and Dana through Yelp. There was an option to request a quote. I gave my project to Dana and a couple of others...I have yet to hear back from the others! Dana replied within a day. Originally the project was not going to be completed until the end of the summer (a month or so later) as there were a lot of projects already on their schedule. The next day Dana contacted me and said he could get it done sooner. Tom and a laborer came out and got started two days after my initial reply! I received an official looking notice from what appeared to be the local fire district in Tahoe, citing an ordinance requiring removal of tree limbs near buildings. I called the number on the bottom of the notice, which indicated Hawley Construction was qualified to do the tree maintenance. I had recieved similar notices from PG&E to trim trees on another property with a recommended firm (Davey Tree, who is a PG&E contractor), so nothing seemed out of the ordinary with the notice. I dutifully contacted the number and scheduled the work. When I arrived to inspect the work after it was completed, I was agahst to see the trees shorn of all of their limbs. Upon investigation, I learned the official notice was not from the Tahoe fire district, but cleverly disguised marketing material from Hawley intended to seduce the unwary into hiring them for tree triming work, that was not required by any official agency. The work itself was pathetic. No artful removal of limbs against building, but instead, shearing of entire trees. The arborist I hired to assess the damage said every short cut immaginable was taken by Hawley's crew and the trees should now be fully removed. I was billed over $1,000 by Hawley for unnecessary work. I have spent over $7,000 planting new trees to hide the damage they have done to my home and formerly wooded lot. Save yourself time and aggravationa and do not do business with Dana Hawley. This is an unscrupulous contractor. read more
