We stayed in area 4, which was in the upper part of the campground away from the amenities. Our site (Q54), was only a short walk to the pool. Overall the sites were spacious and not as packed in with each other as found in other campgrounds.  Everyone we encountered at TG was very friendly and helpful. The amenities range from swimming pools(2 with slides) to an 18 hole disc golf course and everything in between. In the evenings the amusement area has an antique merry go round, inflatable slide/bounce house, train rides and miniature golf.  There is a BBQ restaurant on site and a fully stocked camp store. An ice cream parlor operated in the afternoon/evening serving soft serve, hand dipped, and sundaes. The huge portion for under $4 was very nice. The Swatara state Park is just down the road for hiking and biking. Overall a good place for a relaxing get-away.

We had a wonderful stay at this campground recently and it quickly became one of our favorites…read more It's off the beaten trail, with not alot to do nearby, but the campground provided enough activities and amenities to keep us entertained. They also do not have cable, which is usually a deal breaker for us, but we managed to keep busy. I do think we would have had a different experience had our campsite been in a different location. We travel with grand-kids so we like to be close to the pool, playgrounds, etc. Our location was not only right across from the pool, but easily walk-able to the playground, store, cafe, and pavilion where events are often held. Our spot had a strange layout, but did have ample parking for two vehicles, and our favorite feature was the charming stream that ran through our site. The girls liked to frolic in it and catch the "resident" frog. The one morning we were welcomed by a large crane bird mere feet away from our camper, what a sight! Our girls were in awe! However, we did find that people would come unto our site to visit the stream or short cut to the pool, which I felt was a little rude. One reason I say our experience would have been different had we been positioned elsewhere is because we don't care for rustic, wooded lots, or long steep walks to amenties. This campground has very few lots that aren't heavily wooded. The roads leading to the sites are often rough and narrow. They do rent golf carts, which is something to keep in mind. I'd suggest reserving one at the time of booking your stay. The office/store staff were nice, always busy, a tad slow, but totally understaffed. The store is open from 8 am to 11 pm and the hub of the campground as they preform a number of duties, in addition to opening/closing the gate (which I do wonder how that's handled when they're closed) and cashiering the store. The pools were clean and spacious. There was a bigger one going up to 5 feet deep, and a small circular one for very small kids. There's a covered pavilion with a piano to play, and some of the activities are held here. The playground is adjacent to the pools, and was nicely equipped, although some equipment was older, and featured a large sandy area (bring your own sand toys). The highlight, and what set this campground apart was the cafe, serving a variety (a large menu actually!) of food and hand dipped ice cream. It had a diner feel inside, but also covered picnic tables to eat outside while watching your kids play. The picnic tables were old and splintery so do bring a blanket if wearing shorts. The prices were very reasonable and I loved that they had long hours. The teenage staff were pleasant and efficient too. Some of the activities included cash bingo, kids bingo (free!), a fire truck ride, and a glow candy hunt. While they post a theme on their webpage, the actual activities aren't posted (on a wipe board outside the office) till that Friday. Do take a picture of it when you come in and refer to it as needed. The campground also had wifi - which they admitted was poor. We relied on our Tmobile service all weekend which was fine. A fishing pond (we checked out but didn't fish but there was a huge white carp literally 3 feet long in there!), as well as the famous blue rocks. While some people climbed the rocks we stayed on the perimeter as it went for as far as the eye can see and didn't look safe. Our site did not have sewer, but I opted for honey pot service ($10 cash paid directly to worker) that I asked for and prearranged. Other sites did have sewer. Overall a great experience and campground. Some things I think they could do better - more than one worker in the store, activities on a handout, better upkeep of the roads inside the campground, update some of the older equipment at the playground, and seal the picnic tables. The hits for me: the cafe is pretty awesome (and accepted plastic!), the activities were cool, the bathouse by the pool was modern and exceptionally clean, and they had recycle bins for various types of waste ( a campground first!) SIDENOTE: There's also a small fenced in playground for smaller kids, and a "hot rod" garage, which consisted of old cars - you can poke around if you want, but look and don't touch!

They took down our information and gave us a map of the hikes. We went on the blue hike and cut across onto the red path to go back down on the yellow path. The blue hike was very well marked with a few other parties on it. There were some narrow parts of the hike where we had to wait for others to pass. The terrain is very rocky with big rocks. There was mud and some creek water as well. It's best to wear hiking boots that protect the ankles. The red path was not well marked and we definitely went the wrong way. Luckily we still ended up at the campsite but it was a bit confusing. Overall still a very fun day! The hike was shaded so perfect for a summer outing.

The tour guides are locals who know the history because their families lived it. To be deep in a coal shaft and learn about the lives early coal miners lived from their own community really resonates. Be sure to bring a hoody or long sleeve shirt as it does get chilly down in the shaft, even on a hot summer day. You can buy long sleeve shirts in the gift shop as well. Bashore Scout Camp is and always will be one of the highlights of my summer! I'm a Star Scout,…read moreclosing in on Life, and have been going to Camp Bashore for about 4 years now. That's 4 weeks, 28 days, at this heaven for adventurous teenagers. There are just so many experiences that you can get from Boy Scouts, but nowhere else! For example, this past week, I shot a shotgun for the first time, which was a really fun experience. The counselors are all outstanding and cheerful. Shoutout to Ryan B, Ryan R, Cayden, Griffin, Q, Charlotte, Deegan, Otis, Alec, Doug, and all the other amazing counselors who have made my scouting experience better. Dining hall songs and chants also make the week better. Not to mention that the lake at Bashore has some of the best bass fishing in the area. I currently hold the all-time lake record for biggest fish (30 inches. Thank you Devin for telling me where all the best spots are) Camp Bashore also has very good facilities. In the shooting range, all the guns are cleaned, maintained well, and the range is run safely. The dining hall and shower house is clean, and the food is great compared to the surrounding scout camps. The trading post also has delicious slushies Aside from the experiences, camp bashore also offers various scouting opportunities, such as merit badges, a mile swim, and the Blur Mountaineers program, for young scouts looking for easy ranks. The PA Dutch Council has much to be proud of in Camp Bashore. My son and I just returned after a…read moreweek at the camp, and we were very impressed with the programming this camp offers scouts. 1. Accomodations: Standard platform tents were in good shape, with newer tents present in our campsite. Standard camp latrines were present in camp, but two bathrooms with flush toilets and showers were near campsites. Newer aluminum army cots provided decent sleep. Food in the dining hall was an 8 out of 10, with a salad bar always present, and with decent variety besides breakfasts, which usually consisted of eggs, potatoes, and something else...but otherwise, good meals with good serving sizes. 2. Staff and Programming: Most impressive part of the camp. Much of the staff had 3-5 years experience, a sure sign that the directors offer a work environment that keeps counselors coming back. Camp Director and Program Director both had 30+ years experience, and clearly led by example. Staff was very attentive to individual scout's needs, and even in week 7, had a high morale and enthusiasm. Programming of activities was excellent, with a wide offering of merit badges, COPE, adult training, camp-wide games, open periods, and the Trailblazer program, which offered older scouts acivities such as bouldering, mountain biking, and mountain boarding. Also, the first-year scout program called "Blue Mountain Man", was a very-well run program purposed to give first-year scouts basic skills and meet advancement requirements to get them to first-class. Staff in this program was helpful, friendly, courteous and kind towards these scouts. Closing campfire and OA callout were amazing. 3. Facilities: Bashore is not the biggest facility, acreage-wise, but it does have top-notch equipment, ranges, and watersports. A 3D range and skeet-archery made the archery merit badge interesting. The facilities present were clean, well-kept, and used well. In some ways, having a small camp facility lets the boys spend less time walking between activities. It was a really good week, and I'm now a fan. Thanks, staff, for a great week in 2014!

This review is for the Fall Foliage round-trip tour taken 11/3/19 from the Greater Reading station,…read morestopping at Port Clinton, then arriving at Jim Thorpe. The trip is open seating (no assigned seats), and not knowing any different, we arrived at 7:15 for a 8am boarding and 9am departure, which was more than early enough, as people were boarding right up until the 9am departure and everyone got seats, with maybe a few to spare on each car. We had a group of 8 and had no issues sitting together. We sat in the middle of one of the middle passenger cars, but if we had to do it over again, we'd sit closer to one end or the other for quicker departure at Jim Thorpe and again once arriving back at Reading at the end of the trip. Seating is bench seats on the standard coach, and the seat backs can be moved so instead of seating with your back towards other members of your group, you can seat facing them. This feature is nice, but makes for tight legroom, especially when trying to seat 2 people on each bench, see pic. There is a bathroom on each coach, plus windows can be opened for fresh air, better pictures, or to let things cool off (the coach gets pretty toasty warm as you get going, so wear layers). The seating can be pretty cramped, especially on the trip home. It was tough to get comfortable, even the kids had to stretch out to find some additional legroom. No food/drink available on the train, but you can bring your own soft coolers for drinks and snacks. Everyone was pretty hungry for lunch by the time we arrived in Jim Thorpe around noon. You'll ride the same coach and have the same seats on the way back, so you can leave items (coolers, extra clothes, etc) on the train while you visit Jim Thorpe. Trip was very scenic, especially with the Fall leaves changing colors. The ~3hr trip to Jim Thorpe winds you through rivers, streams, farms, small communities, over bridges and through tunnels. Expect to see plenty of wildlife, including deer and turkey. we saw at least 12 deer on the way up and double that plus a heard of turkeys on the way back. Throughout the trip, the conductor and coach attendant told stories and pointed out anything interesting along the way. we were also showed some old pictures of how things looked in Jim Thorpe 100+ years ago. Upon arriving at JT, everyone had lunch on their minds and with several hundred people all going for lunch in a little town, eateries can get overwhelmed pretty quick. Molly MacGuires is right by the train station, so most people try to go there. Good luck if you're in the middle of the coach like we were and some of the last to board, the place was packed with a line by the time we got there. There are other places to eat within a short 5-10min walk, with just about something for everyone. Train departs at 3:30, so you dont have much time to do anything else after lunch but some quick window-shopping. If we were to do it again, we might pack lunches or get something quicker for lunch, like pizza or sandwiches. Aside from the restaurants, there are historic buildings, great view from on top of the town, and lots of small shops selling various items from oils, handmade goods, ice cream, witchcraft, leather goods, and antiques. Despite only having approx 1.5 hrs to look around after lunch, the only things we didnt get to do were the tours of the couple historical houses. After a quick stop at Wood Ice Cream right by the train station, we boarded and headed back. Everyone tried to take some naps on the way back, with some success, arriving back at Reading Station round 6pm. So plan for a long, full day. This would be a good trip to do once a year, or with people coming from out of town. Average age of passengers was around 60+, with a few families with younger kids. Parking at Great Reading Station is 100+ cars, so enough for all passengers plus a few extra.

The yearly fall foliage steam train ride from Reading to Jim Thorpe is THE BEST train excursion on…read morethe east coast. The train is clean, the restrooms at the station and on the train are clean. The staff is knowledgeable and so friendly. The scenery is top notch and the destination is a great bonus. We make this a tradition each year and this is well worth the price! The Reading & Northern is an A+ act. We are so grateful for the experience and memories it provides!

We stayed here for a little Valentine's Weekend Getaway from the hustle & bustle of the DC Metro…read morearea. It was our first Valentine's Day together & we wanted it to be special. During COVID, we liked that our room had its own exterior door & that we could eat breakfast in our room. Our room was beautiful & decorated in floral lavender. The bed was comfortable & the fireplace made it very cozy during a very cold & snowy weekend. The inn & grounds were also gorgeous & well kept. We would like to be able to explore more of the inn's common areas when we return post COVID. We LOVED the breakfast. It was unique and absolutely delicious! The blueberry breakfast cake is something you should not miss! We also took advantage of the couple's massage at the in-house spa. It was professional, relaxing, & exceptionally well done. Karen & her family are friendly inn keepers & we look forward to our next getaway with them!

The Berry Patch is a beautiful place. The grounds are gorgeous. However, the room we ended up…read morestaying in was not the room we booked, which was very disappointing. The one we booked apparently had "maintenance issues", so we were placed in another room that we really weren't happy with. While it was functionally fine, it looked like it was straight out of a Golden Girls episode, and really wasn't what we wanted at all. We checked the refrigerator in the room and discovered that the previous occupant's leftovers were still there. There was also a dirty sock under the bed. Not even way under, I just bent down and saw it. It was also $25 cheaper than the room we booked, but we weren't refunded the difference. We really should've been informed beforehand that the room we booked wasn't available so we could make other plans. At the very least, we should've been refunded the difference between the room we booked and the one we ended up with. On to breakfast.... Unfortunately, it was nothing memorable. Fruit, a small cup of eggs and ham that my husband said tasted odd. French toast that was doused in sugary strawberry syrup. After we left we got breakfast at a diner nearby, which we DID enjoy. So overall, not a great experience. I think we would have enjoyed our stay a whole lot more if we'd actually been able to stay in the room we booked, but as it stands now, we probably won't be going back to the Berry Patch.

I love this rail line and the many scenic trips they offer out of the Reading terminal…read more To date over the years I've enjoyed scenic rides to Jim Thorpe to leisurely spend a few hours, as well as the holiday train, complete with a visit by Santa and his helpers. For the Christmas event the old world train is decorated, has Christmas tunes playing in the background while Santa and his helpers greet each child on board. They got a small treat and their ticket stamped like the Polar Express. While you don't get off the train - (it goes to Port Clinton and turns around) the scenery is lovely at that time of year, riding past the river and open fields. We even saw "Santa's reindeer" (as they announced it), as a huge herd of deer was on route. Pricing was fair and you could ride coach or on the double decker glass ceiling scenic train. The Reading terminal is easy to find on a main route, has ample on site free parking, a clean restroom area, as well as a little holiday photo prop. You wait for the train in your car or stand outside as there isn't an inside waiting area but a small covered canopy. You do need to walk up steep steps to actually board the train and they do lend a hand to assist. Probably not handicap friendly and definately not for strollers. Pack light as the seats are small (they're antique and people were smaller back than), but they do have a wire rack over for your baggage. The best part is that if you can't make it you can exchange your ticket for another ride as unused tickets never expire.
