He gives them 4 stars because he said the masseuse didn't give him a scalp massage. Although I regretted not getting to do a massage this time, I'll have another chance later. I've experienced many whole body massages from different spas. The customer service and care from the receptionist thru meeting our masseuses were professional and comforting. They were extremely careful throughout the massage ensuring that I was receiving the massage in the areas of concern. I can tell that every stroke was being with done with concentration. When I checked in at hotel, came straight her to schedule a massage. Therapist was Harley. Spa- for the price I think I expected a real spa experience, such as a lounge you could sit at before or after the massage, a wade pool/hot tub, or seating outside to enjoy the view, a tea cart/stand. It wasn't really a spa. I didn't get any tour of the spa/amenities upon arrival, so maybe they had those things but I just was shown it? I wanted an outside massage on the beach, they informed they had a cabana outside for massages. They stated they had wedding to set up for the day i was scheduled. Of note, I saw the wedding completed and taken down before my massage time. Disappointed they were not able to accomdate me. But the 90 min inside massage wasn't bad by Harley. It was mostly became a therapeutic massage I guess because he found so much tension in my body, but I really wanted relaxation. read more

However, Dawne was able to work her magic and get us both in one after another for a 90 minute full body massage. We both had Ryan, who was phenomenal! I have broken my collarbone a couple of times. I'm also pregnant and they were able to accommodate with a pregnancy foam insert that allowed me to be comfortable lying down without any pressure in the front. I was looking for a gentle relaxing massage focusing on neck and shoulders and my masseuse Machiko was super! Gentle and effective and checked in with me throughout the massage. They also have a hot sauna patrons are free to use before and after, as well as a variety of tea for after the massage. I was hesitant when I saw the negative reviews about Hawaii Rainforest Spa but saw that the reviews were written several years back. I decided to give them a try anyway since I was staying at this hotel while on vacation and wanted to treat myself. Massage 4/5 Jodi was my masseuse and I enjoyed my massage a lot. I loved that she put heavy pressure on my back. A lot of times, when I get a massage, the masseuse doesn't put enough pressure for fear of hurting me. I also appreciated that she wasn't chatty during my massage. She would ask me now and then how I was doing and asked if the pressure was ok but that's it. I can't stand when masseurs talk to me during my massage. Not relaxing at all! Scalp Treatment 2/5 Traci used a coconut oil for my hair and scalp. The massage was fantastic and relaxing but the coconut oil literally took days, almost a week to completely rinse out and even then, my hair wasn't as soft as they claimed it would be after the treatment. Ambiance 3/5 They have a small waiting area with mellow music playing. As soon as I walked in, I could smell soothing fragrances coming from the massage rooms. While I was getting massaged, they had some light, relaxing music playing and I was grateful not to hear any outside noise coming in. There is a locker room and shower available as well. I booked a 90 min lomi lomi massage with Angela in a cabana right at the beach. I could hear the waves and feel the wind off the sea throughout the treatment, and that fact in and of itself was incredible. The resort is beautiful, the waves are turquoise, and the air is fresh and clean. Angela talked to me about how lomi lomi is different from other treatments and I found it incredibly relaxing and very meditative. The environment really could not have been more beautiful. Angela recognized I had an issue with tension in my neck (sleeping on the plane) and I decided to add on a deep tissue service during the lomi lomi. So glad I did because I was 100% better after the massage. I really wish I had booked it right when I got to Kauai to get the vacation off to a really relaxing start. I believe in building experiences like this into my travel budget instead of buying "things" that don't always make you feel better. If I ever go back to Kauai (planning on it!) I will undoubtedly head back to this spa. True, it is not a large spa but the service I received was a once in a lifetime memory by which I will measure all future spa experiences! I have been to several high end spas, and this experience was my favorite. Highly recommend the cabana if you can do it. My husband and I booked a much needed couples massage. We were greeted warmly upon entrance. They closed the cabana due to strong winds, but it wasn't needed. Both of us requested a Swedish/Lomi hybrid massage. After filling out the forms, we were led into a room. The room was dim and had soothing music in the background. It was probably a better selection, anyway. After we took off our clothes, they came back in and started. Primary focus was on my shoulders, which have been tight for years. The other parts were nicely massaged without pain. I requested a foot scrub and it left my feet soft. Afterwards, they hung around to discuss the session, and gave us tips to stretch out the tight areas. I liked that extra discussion. I obviously won't be back, due to a one time Kaua'i trip, but I highly recommend booking a massage here. read more

We have come here for many years due to the high quality of the therapists and the excellent customer service. Upon requesting an appointment on line, we were called within 10 minutes. Dawne was delightful and welcoming at the front desk when we got there and made the check out experience easy. Therapists excellent in tailoring the massage to our needs and requests. We chose the deep lomi lomi couples massage which never disappoints. Lots of needed stretching to tight muscles and fascia. Lovely oils used. Calming ambiance. Isha with 30 years of experience did the best massage Mark has ever had! Ryan with 5 years of experience (and growing up on Kauai) loosened all the tight spots and relaxed the muscles for Alexa. I would have given this spa an overall 5 stars, but I had to take off a star because of the fitness room next door to the massage room I was in. My therapist, Machiko, was awesome! She really took the time to understand and tend to my physical needs and issues I was having. I learned a lot from her as well as I received helpful information about my self care until my next massage. Now for the negative. I would have given 2-3 stars overall had it mot had been for Machiko being so awesome. The fitness room next door was a major distraction! The guests that come to the resort have use of the fitness room and not always know what they're doing. A couple of guys kept dropping weights and hitting them against the adjoining wall which was extremely distracting and startling. One time the bang was so much, I was totally in a relaxed mode and my therapist felt me jump. I paid $250 for 90 minutes (including tip) and seriously wanted some of my money back just for the distractions alone. It got to the point that Machiko stopped abruptly and went next door to ask them to stop dropping the weights. It wouldn't have been so bad if the weights weren't against the adjoining wall. Whose "great" idea was that? Try moving the weights, or better yet, the entire fitness room away from what should be a relaxing experience. If it weren't for Machiko, I would strongly suggest not going here. Mahalo! read more

I'm not sure I can express my disappointment accurately enough in so few words. My husband and I were on our honeymoon and decided we would splurge a little on a nice massage. The couples massage was $250 or so for 50 minutes. Expensive, yes. But we figured we would be getting a quality massage so we didn't worry about it so much. We arrived on time however, we needed to fill out some paperwork ahead of time and the massage therapist needed to finish getting the room ready. Therefore, after getting changed and doing the paperwork, we didn't start until about 10 minutes after our appointment time. Not a big deal--until I realized that counted towards our 50 minute massage. Oh and let me tell you about said massage. The therapist literally rubbed my back (with very light pressure) with her forearm the ENTIRE time. I asked for more pressure and got it....for about 30 seconds. Then right back to the crappy massage. I was hoping after a 10 hour flight to Hawaii, my husband and I would at least be able to get some knots rubbed out and feel refreshed for the rest of our honeymoon....that did not happen in the least bit. Now, let me get to the part where we had to pay. I got my bill and realized they do not include tax (normal) to the prices listed on the website. Fine. However, what was not fine is they automatically include a 20% gratuity. Therefore, the massage therapist can literally do the bare minimum (which is what happened to us) and still get a $50 tip. So our bill came to $400. FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS, for the worst massage we have ever had. Honestly...back home we have had $30 massages of better quality than that. So please, do not make the same mistake as us and get a massage at this resort! I promise you will regret it. EDIT: Although I stand firm about what happened and our experience, I will say that as soon as the owner read this review he was extremely courteous and wanted to do whatever he could to make it right. Therefore--I am adding a star from my previous review. He listened to my feedback and decided to refund the tip we gave and also sent us a very nice aloha gift for our trouble. I wholeheartedly believe he will take action to make sure this does not happen again to other customers and am very impressed by his level of professionalism and customer service. read more

On the first day of our trip to Kauai, after picking up the rental car and checking in, the first thing my bf and I wanted to do was relax with a spa day. I planned it a few weeks in advance, but even that process was long and confusing. Apparently their main office for reservations and stuff are on the Big Island, so when I was receiving emails from both Kona and Kauai I was really confused and thought I booked the wrong place. After that all got cleared up, and we arrived that day for our massages, we get to the front counter to encounter a really pissed off lady employee. Kept fussing about how she wasn't supposed to be scheduled at that time cause she had something to do and the guy just looked flustered and frustrated cause there was no one else to contact to come in. This was all going on while we were filling out our forms and all I could think was, "I hope I don't have this lady doing my massage". Well lucky me, I got this lady as my masseuse. But by then, she put on her "happy face" and welcomed my bf and I in to the changing areas and locker room. The ambiance in the spa was nice. It was quiet and I realized we were the only ones there. After getting changed, she led us to the couples room and we got settled in. My actual massage was relaxing but also very lacking. After the massage was over, she bolted out as fast as she could and the guy was left to help us with closing out. For $200, I felt cheated a bit. It was not a good way to start the massage going in, and I didn't feel better after either. If I ever go back to Kauai, I will definitely not be going back to this spa for their services. read more
