A name fit for a king, Rad Bar is definitely it. I travel the country for a living and on this particular day I was fortunate to have a business meeting just down the street. Work done, it was now time to unwind. Enter Rad Bar. Entering the limo tinted doors, I see lights and art, I hear golden era hip hop, and feel a whole lotta good vibes. Divey for sure but this wasn't just an ordinary dive bar. Take a look up and you'll spot bar decor and collectibles all just awesome as the drink specials and the beer menu. But the buck doesn't stop at the beer. Cocktails are served and while the drinks are mixed and poured, the best and most diverse music plays across the speakers. While I hung out for a couple hours I learned that Rad Bar hosts guest DJ's, bands and other unique events. For context, I was born and raised in Koreatown Los Angeles, thousands of miles from home but within minutes of entering the doors and meeting Jo Jo at the bar, her welcoming energy made me feel at home. You get the feeling that the folks running this joint really enjoy what they do. That they care about giving the community something to call home. A place where all can feel welcome. She reluctantly explained the QR ordering system (sounds like she's heard complaints about this before) and brought us Singo cards as well as a little lamp for the table. That's the end of what went well. From there we all placed our orders: 3 mixed drinks including my "tipsy water" and a beer. The tipsy water is their version of a classic ranch water (3 ingredients - Blanco tequila, fresh lime juice, and Topo Chico). Their menu confirmed these are the ingredients of their "tipsy water". When our drinks arrived, I took the first sip of my drink and it was awful! It tasted like pure salt, missing carbonation, and tasted NOTHING like a ranch water. I had my friends all taste it as well to ensure it wasn't just me. They all agreed that this did not taste as it should and recommended I send it back (which I have never done with a drink before in my life). The waitress was so sweet to oblige and took my drink back to the bar from our table. She returned with an other tipsy water which tasted the exact same. She asked if it tasted better and I unfortunately had to say no. I had already thought about what I'd order instead, a standard vodka and Diet Coke (easy to not mess up) but wasn't given that opportunity. Instead our very kind waitress told me that the "manager" "bartender" had instructed her to not tell me, but she refused to make us anymore mixed drinks. No explanation. My husband asked to have the manager come to our table. Haley (the name given) arrived at the table and we introduced ourselves. I shared that my drink did not taste like any ranch water I've had before. She stated that several other customers had not had an issue with their drinks that night. I asked if she'd said she wouldn't make us anymore mixed drinks. She said she had not said that. I shared that the waitress had told us that and then Haley said, "did you hear those words come out of my mouth". I asked her if she was calling our very kind and pregnant waitress a liar? Haley then confrontationally asked if we wanted to have the waitress come over and say that in front of her. Of course I said, no! I would not be responsible for her getting in trouble for sharing the truth. The next part was the truly unbelievable. Haley then proceeded to reveal that she'd made the drink but they were out of Topo Chico, which no one had shared beforehand. I have no idea what they substituted for that crucial ingredient, but it was awful. Haley defended herself, the drink, and her comment and finally revealed she didn't even make the drink correctly. The entire interaction Haley was escalating the situation versus diffusing, as a manager should do. I finished by asking who the manager was. Haley said she was. I asked who the owner was. Haley said she was. I informed Haley I'd be leaving a review then and we would be leaving. We paid and left the tip in cash for our sweet waitress (who I hope received it). It was a truly shocking encounter. We left and determined not to let Haley ruin our night, found another bar and had several well made ranch waters. We will never return to this bar.

Everyone in the place was super friendly. Don't expect any table service here - order your drinks at the bar and make yourself comfortable. The bartenders were really friendly and welcoming too. It's always weird when you go into a place for the first time and don't know anyone and feel that "I'm outta place" vibe. But not here - I didn't feel that way at all. There is a nice back patio for warmer days and nights even in winter. Live music is an added bonus. And apparently you can count on a clean women's bathroom. I was told this was true, and it held up to it's reputation. Smoking is allowed inside, so be prepared if you're not a smoker or have issues breathing in second hand stuff. I'm somewhat sensitive to it, but I wasn't dying. The back door to the patio was open, and when it got too bad for me, I just stepped outside for some fresh air. I may have danced a little bit back there too....

The crowd was a fun mix, from early 20s to more seasoned patrons. I can definitely see it being a great place to explore with a group, bouncing from one themed space to another. I'm curious to come back on jazz night to see whether it leans more speakeasy than bar. One of the bartenders even shared a bit of the building's backstory: it was originally a house in McAlester, OK, transported all the way to OKC. Apparently it may have once been a nursing home and possibly a brothel. If only those walls could talk!

Everyone keeps to themselves or their groups, and it is a better crowd than you will find at some of the local clubs. Bricktown definitely didn't turn out the way the planners wanted, but it is a good thing this "rustic" spot kept its "charm" despite all the gentrification in the area.
