I understand libraries are known as 'quiet' places. But these should also be safe places for children. This is a free place for children to come for parents and families who may be low income and deserve to have access to resources such as these. I'm DISGUSTED at the level of disrespect and abuse that has been directed towards parents in this space by Gretchen. It is abuse to talk to anyone in the manner in which she has and is completely unacceptable and inappropriate. Especially in the presence of children... I was astonished to hear that so many people have similar experiences and that is absolutely unacceptable. We want to share the Aloha experience with everyone and want to make everyone feel comfortable and SAFE bringing their children to a PUBLIC LIBRARY. This situation is sick and needs to be addressed. Or pay $25 and is good for 5yrs. If you are a resident then is free, just bring a piece of mail with your local address. Printing is $.15 cents all black and white, no color printing. There are books, cds and movies available. The hours are a little funky so check their website before you go. Overall is a good alternative to Hilo library and around the area.

The agreement settles a lawsuit filed in May 2003 by the American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai'i against Steve Hirakami, principal of the Hawai'i Academy of Arts and Sciences charter school in Pahoa, and his secretary, Andrea Irvine. The federal lawsuit was filed on behalf of the student identified as "Jane Doe," and her mother, who said her daughter was forced to remove her clothes after she and two other students -- one male, one female -- were accused of stealing $30 from a school van driver on Jan. 30, 2003. According to the lawsuit, Hirakami and Hawai'i County police questioned the students and searched their belongings, but no cash turned up. Coming into her library is like entering a joy-filled room full of magical books. Sara makes time for everyone and goes out of her way to enhance the library's services, whether it's reading to a toddler, teaching a senior citizen the computer, ordering books for clients, or scheduling community activities at her library; she is a master at running her library.
