I attended a concert here and the inside is beautiful. Enter was easy. Parking was a nightmare but I eventually found parking for free! The staff was nice and the drinks were very affordable even the alcohol! read more

This place is ok. I've been twice in the past ten years, most recently this week. It feels very far away, and the parking is sprawled out and really annoying. Their website threatens that you'll be towed if you park on the side of the road yet tons of people do it anyway. The front door is a bottleneck because they have a paper list that they're checking for your name on. Also the bar only takes cash so they have an ATM on site. What year is it? The staff were friendly, but since I want about to use an ATM I didn't really interact with many of them. I'll go there if there's an artist I really want to see, but I don't think the venue alone would draw me. read more

One of my favorite venues to see a show even though it's an hour drive. I've seen shows there that are jam packed standing room only and also more recently saw Johnny Folsom Four and had a seat right up front. Either way is fun. The place is clean, open and spacious and the music is not deafening loud like it often is at other venues. Note that the bar is cash only so have cash! That took us by surprise. Fun restaurants and a brewery nearby to enjoy before the show as well -- and check out the Haw River below! read more

An excellent, intimate concert venue that has terrible parking and cash-only bars. The Haw River ballroom is a really lovely concert venue out in Saxapahaw, which for most people in the Triangle area is a drive. I've seen a handful of artists here and I really like this place. It's big, but also small enough to still feel pretty intimate. There's a few places to eat nearby which is nice when it comes to planning your night out. The biggest issue this venue has is that parking is absolutely horrendous. It's still better than it previously was but it's pretty awful. They urge you not to park on the side of the street, but during any concert folks are parked wherever they can put a vehicle. This venue is also a cash only bar venue which in 2024 is wild. Those are my only real complaints with this venue. The crowd here is typically older and pretty chill. It's nice to go to a concert and not feel like you're being strip searched before a show. I brought a point and shoot camera to the most recent concert and was never hassled about it which I loved.  I look forward to going to more concerts here hoping that they'll get the cash-only thing sorted out. read more

This place could have been the worst but it would still have always held a special place in my heart since it's where I first saw my favorite band in the world perform live. But alas it was not awful at all it was really honestly very cool. It's a massive place in the middle of nowhere (besides the neighboring general store). Check in was quick and easy and there's plenty of space for everybody to stand and dance they had a great craft beer selection and were not super overpriced like some venues like to be. There was also seating up above which I didn't check out just quickly glanced at. This venue is super neat and I'd be more than willing to make the hour and ten minute trek again and again to see indie bands I love. read more

Etix never stated ID, Vax or Mask. Having just flown from the West Coast maskless we were caught off guard. Mask is fine by choice but as the owner said, it is my place & my rules! Next time maybe soften your tone?!? No seats, wish we had know, drag too stand for so long. Performance good but sound system sub par. LOVE Saxapahaw! The Ballroom not so much. This is my new favorite concert venue in the Triangle. There's tons of space, cheap drinks, and a nice atmosphere all around. Also, you're not going to get trapped behind a pole like at Cat's Cradle or The Ritz! Parking can get a little hairy, but I hear there's a new lot to the side of the road if you keep your eyes peeled. Looking forward to more shows here! read more

I fell in love with the Haw River Ballroom at first sight when I was at the grand opening Love Language/Old Ceremony show, and have only fallen more deeply in love since then. In short, this is simply an amazing concert venue. Located in beautiful and rustic Saxapahaw (a destination where every time I go, I think "Why don't I come to Saxapahaw more often?"), this elegantly converted cotton mill fits the town perfectly. You can plainly see that a lot of love was put into the restoration of this venue. The venue itself is pretty large with high ceilings and good acoustics. The main ballroom floor area is downstairs, while there is a very cool largeish balcony up top where Cup 22 (the venue's cafe) serves up coffee drinks, tea, and some small snacks. This upstairs balcony offers some seating should you prefer to sit for the show, and it also opens up onto a deck from which you can enjoy a drink and the music out in the beauty of Saxapahaw. More points are earned for the fact that they serve up a variety of local beer drafts (ie, Fullsteam, Natty Greene's and Foothills) and even offer some free coffee (while it lasts) for the ride home after a show. Talk about knowing the way to my heart! The only real downside (as mentioned in other reviews) is that parking can be an adventure or a nightmare if you're coming to a packed show. Hey, little ol' Saxapahaw can only offer so much parking, right? If you can't find parking in the lot or out front, however, you can simply park by the canoe launch, in the lot of a neighboring business (I think that's ok), or in a grassy field a little down the road where everyone seems to go. In short, this is a fantastic music venue that is likely to surprise and charm you. Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie) remarked at his solo show that Haw River Ballroom does indeed "meet my criteria for niceness" (said in response after everyone in Carrboro he ran into apparently told him that the Haw River Ballroom was quite "nice"). If it's good enough for Mr. Gibbard, it is good enough for this guy! read more

First, this place is beautifully restored and renovated. The main floor is the main concert hall / dance floor or event space. The second floor is a little coffee shop that serves coffee, tea, beer, wine and various snacks. The back of the 2nd floor are full windows that open up to a deck where not only can you catch the sun set into the haw river, but also there is a 2nd outdoor stage below so you can order a drink and step out on the balcony to enjoy said drink, catch the sunset, and listen to some music. A staircase takes you up one more level where there is additional tables and seating. My only gripe was not so much of the ballroom but the festival we happened to attend. Facebook stayed the last band would be performing indoors on the main stage at 8:30. We found a spot and ordered a drink. And waited. And waited. I found a flier for the event at the bar and it too said the band would be starting at 8:15. I re-checked Facebook to confirm I hadn't misread. I didn't. However the band didn't start until 10pm. I know this isn't late, but when you plan your night around scheduled times it can really throw thing off. None the less, great venue and I will be back soon, most likely to see the midtown dickens upcoming show. read more

This was a terrific venue for a concert. It's great to be able to look out over the river on the balcony. As for parking: They had a sign "public parking" leading us right to the grassy field for free parking which was only a short walk from the venue. It had been raining terribly that day, so cars and shoes got red clay on them, and it was very dark getting to that parking lot after the concert. For sound: I was excited someone else here said it the music was not loud enough. I was right up front at the concert and felt it was loud, but I guess if you want it quieter you can head toward the back. 15% of children in our country already have permanent hearing damage- anything above 85 decibels can lead to long-term hearing- so I really hope the venue and concertgoers take precautions. read more

Had a road trip planned from Milwaukee down to Florida to visit my parents and take in a couple of Spring Training Baseball games when I remembered that my favorite band, Teenage Fanclub, was wrapping up their North American Tour in Saxapahaw, NC. I figured that's not TOO far out of my way... lol So I made a left turn in Louisville, KY and headed to North Carolina. Turns out I made an excellent decision! Not only did I get to see the band for the third time this leg of the tour, but I also got to see them in an absolute gem of a venue! It's a beautiful reclaimed building in a beautiful setting just outside of Durham, NC. Great sound, great lighting, and just an overall great experience. If you're in the neighborhood, or even within 500 miles or so, check this place out! read more

This is a pretty stellar venue. I saw "The Tallest Man on Earth" here a few weeks ago and I am not sure if the acoustics are just amazing or they just worked that well for him. Because he sounded phenomenal, just like he does on the LP. The venue is three stories and there was plenty of vantage points to see the stage. Even though it was a sold out show. I wish I had ordered a coffee from the cafe, lets face it TMOE is not a show you get hammered and rock out at, but ill save that for the next show. It is in a beautiful location too. The good: the venue is really nice, well-kept, and really cool. The acoustics are great, which makes the shows there all that much better. The meh: They only take cash for beer and wine sales on the first floor (though apparently they accept cards upstairs?), and the only ATM in the building charges ridiculous fees. Also while they have good selection, there was no Haw River Farmhouse Ales in sight, which was a surprise. So in terms of a concert, absolutely yes! But bring cash. read more

I went here for the first time a couple of weekends ago to see Sarah Jarosz (who was AMAZING). The venue itself was equally amazing. We got there right in time for the show (missed the opener) and therefor at first thought parking was going to be issue. However, after circling the parking lot and deciding to park on the street we noticed additional parking signs that led us to a large field across the street where we were able to park for free. Unlike many other music venues the Haw River Ballroom seems like it is meant to host family friendly shows. All acts must end by 11pm, and although there is alcohol the crowd wasn't extremely rambunctious (this may also be because of who they were there to see, Sarah Jarosz, who is a very soulful, folky, and adorable acoustic musician). There were handful of kids dancing away and the atmosphere was similar to being at a music festival. The building itself is a former cotton mill. The industrial feel creates a great ambiance, and for those who would rather not stand in the crowd right by the stage there are two additional levels (kind of like balconies) that offer a good view and have tables and chairs to sit at. I also HAVE to give them extreme props for running the building, at least in part (not sure what the actual percent of production vs. overall use is), on both solar and geothermal energy. Overall, the business model is awesome. You can go to a concert, relax, enjoy the music, and not feel like you're in an overcrowded bar or dance club. Seeing as they host concerts with a lot of my favorite types of music, I see myself braving the lengthy drive from Raleigh quite often. read more

Snuggled in the tiny town of Saxapahaw (say it like Homer Simpson says Saxamaphone), is one of the best concert venues I've ever been to. It's in a renovated cotton mill with a few other destinations which, taken in together, make for a perfect night out. Get there early to secure a spot in the limited parking, and spend your time enjoying dinner at the general store, a beer at the brewery, and take a little nature walk on the path by the river before going to your show. Legit acts come here! Calexico, piebald, guster, and the mountain goats have all headlined here. The vibe is hip and intimate. Even if you're not right up at the front you can still see the band well enough to imagine they are singing just to you. Can't wait for another concert here! read more

This venue rocks! We went to go to see Smallpools here and had no idea what to expect. It's truly in the middle of nowhere, but only 40 min or so from Apex. The only places on the road to get there are tiny diners and churches, but lo and behold, right on the river, is this perfect venue for a concert or anything else (like a wedding reception or dance)! The first floor is pretty spacious for a fairly small concert, but they also have a second and third floor, both with balconies to step outside when the action gets a little warm inside. They have two bars, one of which is also a coffee bar. We'd probably give this 4.5 stars due to not having any liquor, but that was our only complaint! Bathrooms are super clean and available and we never felt crowded at any point. Although we were right in the middle of things on the first floor, it was good to know that we could go watch with a great view from the seating up above for a more relaxing experience. We both agreed that this is the best concert venue we'd been to in the Triangle area! Next time one of our bands plays here, there's no doubt we'll be back. read more

There's lots of space, the music always sounds great, there's beer AND coffee beverages available and they have a great outdoor area as well if you need to get away from the crowds. There are also a few good food options nearby - The Eddy, the General Store and a Butcher Shop. Don't forget to stop by Haw River Farmhouse Ales before the show - they always have interesting experimental beers on tap! The only issue I see is parking - if a show is sold out, people park alongside of the Saxapahaw Bethlehem. There's not much a shoulder, so not only is it a challenge to get to your car, there are a lot of people walking alongside the road. read more

SUPER neat venue! This place has uber-cool ambience in an old mill location and has been well renovated into a great concert space. For us, the only drawback is that it's a pretty long haul from cary/raleigh, but we'll be going back for sure. We went for a Lucinda Williams concert- and while that was a bust because it took her over an hr to come out after the opening act- the venue itself deserves props for it's beverage offerings, neat space, outside options, etc. Parking was fine for us and just a short walk. Some folks were complaining about the lack of space to sit, but that wasn't a problem for me personally. Ic an see how this venue is pretty popular for private events like weddings as well. The acoustics were very good with pretty much a wide open, up close and personal stage with some minimal seating on the peripherals. Would definitely suggest subscribing to their calendar of events, finding a show, and just making it out there to see for yourself! read more

This is a truly unique concert venue. The sound/acoustics and beer selection are both excellent, but it can be tough to get a good view of the stage because the hall is long and narrow. I recommend visiting Saxapahaw in the daytime first before venturing out here at night, to have a better sense of your bearings. It's really out in the middle of nowhere. I usually park in the overflow lot, which is not really a lot - it's more of a field - and I use the flashlight on my phone to guide me on the short walk to and from the venue. The field can get muddy so dress appropriately. On my last visit (to see The War on Drugs) the venue offered free coffee to everyone after the show. That was a really nice touch that I appreciated greatly. read more

This is a really nice small venue to watch a show. Great setting by the river. We bought our tickets online for the Robert Randolph & Family Band concert and we picked them up at WILL call. The entrance to the ballroom is to the right of the building at the lower level, you will walk through a small concourse and you will see the entrance. We were in line about 10 minutes before the doors opened and picking up our tickets was not a problem. I parked off the road next to the lofts which is less than a couple of hundred yards from the entrance. There were people tailgating in the lot of the gas station which was cool. Great show, friendly staff. We would definitely make the two and half hour trip here to watch another show. read more

The venue is beautiful. Staff friendly. Acoustics very good. This particular day was very hot and so the walk over from the pit (parking lot) felt like a little hike. The line for will call was moving slowly. So, my party waited in the brewery-which i didnt get to sample as I was slightly dehydrated from the type of work I did that day as well as the heat and walk over to venue. The water was good! but the brewery, itself, was very hot. The actual Ballroom was nice and cool! there are 3 levels and tons of room. There is a small reserved seating area on second floor and 3rd, i believe... but next to nothing for the general admission. Too bad, I could have used a seat for a little while that day. So could the person who needed EMS/FD to sit him outside to assess. I must say, the Venue Staff was awesome with getting this person some help. Everything about this place is really nice. Im holding back on the rating because I think some general seating would be really beneficial. Not the whole area, just something around the edges? There is no gradual slope so with standing room only, if you are 5'7" or under, youre going to be looking at the back of someones head unless your lucky. Even on the second floor, you must stand behind the few rows or reserved seating...same with third level. and of course, as you move up stairs, it gets hotter. Probably a plus for some in winter. I want to like it better than the cradle but, the cradle has tons of seating throughout along with standing room so, it just more comfortable when already exhausted from fairly physical work. read more

Old Geezer alert. I don't go to many concerts these days because I am sufficiently old and experienced enough to know what matters to me. Had my first experience of the Haw River Ballroom at the second weekend of the Jason Isbell/Holly Williams concert. Decided to attend in part because of the high ratings other gave here at yelp. Was very disappointed and left about 20 minutes into Isbell's set. Not because Isbell was bad - there was no way for me to know - but because the venue is very bad for a packed, or even very full house. I did enjoy Holly William's brief set. The place was not packed, was able to position myself close to the stage and bobble around the several at least 6'5" former basketball players in front of me to see her, and most surprisingly, the sound was fairly decent where I was positioned, close up front and against the left wall (facing the stage.) Because it wasn't packed at that point, (though still a good crowd) I did venture out a little to listen from different places in the room. The sound was most distorted where one would expect it to be best, in the middle of the room, about halfway back. We lost our spot during the break - not unexpectedly. The friend I attended with did fight her way briefly back to that spot and said it had turned hostile amid the packed crowd. We ended up all the way at the back with a packed crowd in front of us, a jostling and narrow path behind us between the stairs and the bars, and rather rude (albeit necessary for safety's sake) admonishments from employees to stand away so people could get through to the bar. The problem was there was no place in which to "stand away." I suspect there were many more bodies in the place than the fire marshall notices of maximum capacity indicated were safe, and while I don't generally worry about such things, I did find myself thinking this is not the place I want to die if a fire would break out, and felt somewhat reassured to be at the back of the pack for only that reason. If I stood on tiptoe and jumped up and down, I could very occasionally get a glimpse of the foreheads of Isbell and band. I ain't tall, but at 5'8" I am not a short woman. All I could see, really, were the lights over the stage. The sound was somewhere between less than mediocre to bad no matter where I shifted behind the 'pack'. If only I could have consistently seen at least the faces of the band, I might have been persuaded to stay in spite of the less than average accoustics. Would at least have been able to have enjoyed some of the 'live' energy one ventures out to a live concert to experience. Very shortly. however, I realized I could go home and listen and watch Isbell perform every number live on Youtube, and be able to both see the performance and enjoy better sound, and not have microbrewed beer spilled down my back in the process. So I did go home, and did enjoy Isbell, again, on Youtube. I understand that an act like Jason Isbell, is going to draw a full house. (I don't understand how the venue gets by with significantly exceeding the stated capacity, but even if the crowd was limited to the full legal capacity, I think I would have the same complaints with the venue at or near full capacity.) I understand the accoustics in a lot of venues are less than perfect but the energy of seeing the performer live is worth the sacrifice. I don't understand why a venue designed to have an audience of 400+ people listening while standing does not have a stage built high enough for anyone but the first 75 people up close to the stage to be able to actually watch the band perform. Would I go back? Yes, for a local or regional band that I expected to draw no more than half the stated capacity of the venue. I don't know what an additional $2 would have bought me in terms of limited reserved seating in the balcony. (they were sold out by the time I bought tickets.) The space was so crowded that I did not climb the stairs - seemed intrusive to do so. Looking up into the balcony, it was clear that a seat on the front row of the balcony would have been great visual seats. No idea if seats behind the front the front row would have allowed one to see the stage, and no idea about the sound up in the balcony. I'll go back again if a local or regional group is playing that won't draw more than a couple of hundred folks. If I happen to be in the neighborhood in the interim and the ballroom is open, I'll drop by and ask detailed questions about the seating in the balcony to decide if I might consider seeing a more major act there from the balcony in the future. read more

Beautiful venue space in the heart of Saxapahaw Love the transformation of the old mill into a fun mix of restaurants, condos and ballroom. The ballroom is a great space to enjoy live music. Checked out Haw River Ballroom for a concert and enjoyed listening to music in a unique space, but there were some miscues. First, when you purchase tickets more than likely you'd lean towards picking up your tickets at will-call to avoid the $12 charge to have tickets mailed to you. When you (and everyone else going to the concert) arrive before the show, you'll find that will-call is only a couple of windows and there is very little space b/w will call and the outside doors. So in December, when you're waiting in a huddled mass of people waiting to get to the will call window, you're battling with little space and open doors welcoming the cold air in. The pick up for will call is paper based (read: archaic), but it doesn't take too long to get tickets, however everyone in your party has to show their ID to a will call attendant to get their hand stamped to purchase alcohol. So in the mess of just picking up tickets, you'll find people coming back and forth to get stamps. There has to be a better system for this. After you get through that madness, a fun turnstile clocks you in as you enter the ballroom - there's a beer stand, restrooms and a fun lighted entry. There are more drink stations in the main ball room, some chairs along the sides of the ballroom and two upper galleries to enjoy the show. However, at a capacity show, the ballroom was beyond a reasonably comfortable capacity. There was hardly anywhere to move, all the stairs were filled with people and it seemed it was an obvious fire hazard, even moving around during breaks was treacherous, when it's dark the stairs get a bit dangerous. That aside, if you go for a smaller show you'll enjoy yourself - the acoustics are great, and the venue is beautiful. I'd recommend coming early to any show as parking near the ballroom fills out quickly - I came several hours before the show and was able to find one of the last spots near the general store, however it looks like they've opened up a field within walking distance for additional parking. Overall it was a fun, unique experience. But a venue that I won't be able to enjoy too often - the drive combined with the crowds takes away a bit of the charm that Saxapahaw is known for. read more

If you haven't been to a show here yet you've missed out on a really cool scene. The converted dye house from the old cotton mill has amazing acoustics and is the perfect size. Its pretty much standing only but the large wooden and brick room are not too huge. Generally they have Fullsteam beer on tap among others and have been attracting some surprisingly famous acts. I've been to 3 or 4 shows already and the sound system is really great. There are also a few tables high up and away from the stage that have a cool view. Parking can be difficult, but you can park downhill at the canoe/kayak launch parking lot and walk up. read more

This is an amazing venue. Awesome sound and cozy atmosphere and the nicest people around. However, it would be great to know ahead when they have a seated show and when a standing only show. Standing for 3 hours or more might be prohibitive for some people. However, seated shows are very comfortable in this venue. read more

Went to Gillian Welch concert. No chairs. Stood up for three hours, as we got there early to get a good seat! Aggressive folks came in late and pushed in front of us. Parking in very tight spaces between road and mountain. Pitch black afterwards and you have to walk in the middle of the highway to get to your car. Heard from others there is a muddy parking lot to the north but I came in from the south and didn't even know about it. 75 minutes before showtime the parking was almost all taken and everyone was already lined up at the door, obviously they know to get there very early! read more

This venue is a part of a cute little complex in the middle of nowhere. The complex includes a butcher, pub and general store. I wish I would have come earlier so I could check out the butcher. There was a disco ball when I went, which made the set very dreamy and definitely a special show. The venue itself is awesome and the owner is very nice and communicates well. However the rest of the staff is very rude. While I was talking to a friend the security guy started yelling out of nowhere for people to move out of the way and he pushed me right after he started yelling that, without giving me time to move....rude. Also when I tried to order tickets over the phone the woman who answered got really snappy when I said I was calling for tickets and told me to call back in 30 minutes. My friend also tried to call in to order her ticket (she was having troubles purchasing them online) and no one picked up. If this were just about the venue itself 5 stars, if the staff was a little more polite my experience here would have been infinitely better. read more

Simple but elegant restoration! The acoustics are good. Saw a show that was awesome--size of the ballroom is perfect . Small enough to have an intimate musical experience but large enough to not feel packed in! The first floor offers the stage, bar (beer and wine) with some seating flanking the stage. The second story loft offers seating with a view of the stage and access to a deck with an awesome view. Beer, wine, coffee and tea are offered upstairs. The hall can also be rented for weddings which I imagine would be beautiful! It's about a 40 min drive from Greensboro and well worth it! Go see a show! read more

I thought this was a concert venue with seats, not a standing only club like venue. There were about 30 seats with reserved signs & names on them. And a few couches and tables that were all taken. I don't know if the seats are VIP only, or first come first served, If so, you'd have to be there an hour early. With an opening act I wasn't familiar with, I just left. I wasn't going to stand around for hours. I looked at the river views, had a veggie burger & beer from the General Store and drove home. Thankfully I lucked out & got a parking space that wasn't a 20 minute walk away. read more

This venue is SO great. I went for the first time a couple weekends ago and the acoustics are amazing. Beer selection is great and the building is so beautiful. Its a transformed mill from back in the day and it has great character. There is a coffee bar upstairs, so feel free to bring kids to shows. It was very family friendly. Cool crowds -- its like the new Carboro. The beat of what the south has to offer -- down home southern history with the coolness that's just beginning to permeate the area. Saw Fitz and the Tantrums at this venue last month and it was a great standing room only venue. The acoustics were just right and I loved that there was a bar both upstairs and downstairs. Parking could be better, but I think the locals are used to shows so no one is whizzing down the highway at night if it obvious a show is happening. read more

The ambience of this place is the stuff of dreams. The authentic [vintage] decor makes it exude a sense of elegance and history. The entrance on the ground floor features colored lighting under a grate, creating a grand entrance for anyone and everyone.
