Well to say i'm angry is putting it mild. Tumble Vets are shockingly bad. I will NEVER have to take…read moreany of them there again, thankfully. When i took my Lurcher this morning, upon arrival i didn't receive any eye contact. I just heard "whats the dogs name?" There was no consultation with the vet. I must add, Brian (Vet) has been extremely professional WHEN i've received consultations with various other pets. Its the reception staff. So then still without engaging she came round to take paddy from me and started to DRAG him by his lead which is a slip lead......so tightens with each YANK!! So after seeing my reaction she actually spoke to paddy and still being resistant he went with her. Still no eye contact with myself, just 'Call after 1pm' as she disappeared. So we arrive at the vets at 3.30pm to collect him, as she had stated on the phone. The Surgery was shut but she arrived shortly after. No apology or even a hello. When we enter there is another receptionist present, and sadly presented same attitude and disregard. We stood around like fools until she comes out and passes me several pack of tablets saying 'start them tomorrow'. Finally when we are reunited with my lurcher, instantly noticing that they hadn't cut his claws. I had specified this with her and was wrote on the sudation form i had to sign. Which i predicted verbally with my partner beforehand that would 'Forget'. When i asked if they had been done, she appeared a little agitated and looked. Then added 'The quicks were far too low so we didn't do it'. We just left, after paying £145 i could no longer be there as i was at risk of voicing my opinion, rather loudly. We have been observing his nails over the weeks and the quicks are very much retracted. I have a phobia of cutting dog claws, which is why i haven't cut them. So in the end, no customer service or consultation. Nor is there any communication between vets and staff, which i find very disturbing. I know animals aren't regarded highly by most but they are our children and i want to know everything when it comes to their health. Complaint going into the emerald vet group. Not acceptable.

Revy was 14.5yr a wonderful loving member of our family. The support we received during the last 4 yrs and particularly during Revys terminal illness recently. The compassion and support was and is faultless, all staff from reception to Vets to admin absolutely wonderful people.

I should point out, that Bob the dog is very car sick and even such a short journey would have been bad for all of us. It was at that moment, that I decided to change vets. As the journey would undoubtably make the poor thing even sicker than he was already, the journey had to be worthwhile. So with the dog at his weakest we booked into Ystwyth Vets, and were seen soon after by a wonderful, cheerful vet who was both knowledgeable and comforting. He talked me through several different scenarios, some quite scary others not so and said the first thing we should do was a blood test. Which my previous vet had also suggested, but had dismissed it as a final resort as it was expensive. At once I was totally at ease with the vet at Ystwyth's and even though he also said it would be expensive, it was clearly the right thing to do as the situation was bad enough without waiting any longer. The results came back a week later, and they showed the dog had pancreatic failure, I don't know enough about medicine to explain the test results but they were extremely low and well below heathy guidelines. What I do know, now is that the pancreas works to digest fat and when it fails, the body stops being able to utilise the fat in the diet and it passes straight through. Which explained the foul faeces and rapid weight loss both of which the previous vet failed to pick up on months before. So, once the Ystwyth vet had the test results, he smiled and explained that now they knew what the problem was and told me not to worry because it was easily treated. To say I was relieved is an understatement. He gave me a tub of pancreatic enzymes without charge as they were past their sell by date. He explained it wasn't a drug they usually kept in stock, but he said that it was worth trying and they would order in some more after the weekend. And that although they were slightly over date it shouldn't make any difference as the tub hadn't been opened. That evening I fed all the dogs and walked them, I saw an immediate improvement in Bob, his faeces proved beyond a doubt that the enzymes worked, and from the next day onwards I was able to increase his food intake as the food I was putting into him was staying in! Gradually he's gained weight and his overall condition has improved a great deal. Before his illness he weighed 35kg at the time of his first consultation at Ystwyth vets he was down to just over 25kg, and at his last weigh in (Dec 2011) he's up to 29kg. When he was at his lowest weight and was very ill I made the decision to shave him, which we've never done as I like OESdogs to have a full coat, it's what sets them apart from other dogs. But as he had lost so much weight & condition, grooming was too painful for him. Now though, he's regaining weight, his body shape is filling out again and his hair has begun to regrow. He will never be the dog he was, as he will remain on this treatment for the rest of his life. But he's making an awesome recovery and is as bouncy and joyful as he ever was. So to sum up, make Ystwyth vets your first port of call. They are a large surgery with many specialised, experienced and knowledgeable veterinarians. The practice is very busy all the time but the staff are always pleasant and helpful. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

They are essentially the only veterinary hospital in Cardiff, offering comprehensive health care to domestic animals. The Hospital is equipped to the highest standards and has its own x-ray development and laboratory facilities which means that diagnoses can be made rapidly, minimizing the distress to the animals being treated, and can obviously save lives where conditions could prove fatal if not treated immediately. Thy also have on-call residential nurses to look after animals that require overnight convalescence after operations have been performed, or who need to be monitored for other reasons. They have a few off-road parking spaces out at the front, but there's also a large car park at the rear. All pet owners should know about this hospital. It is definitely the place to take badly injured pets after road accidents, and other potentially fatal traumas. They also own the Penarth Pet Health Centre in Penarth.

That he provides value for money? Were I to score Martin Francis on this basis, even a bit harshly, it would go tick tick tick cross. He's always been spot on with diagnosis and treatment, even sending me home without charge when in a panic I'd dragged our wee terror there with a limp caused by him crashing through a fence, but as it turned out with an immediate visual inspection he'd only got a dead leg so CALM DOWN. He likes the fact that our dog is all bluff and bravado befitting a Jack Russell cross but in fact he's delicate like a little flower - aw poor puppy dog - 'cos he's got allergies and sneezes a lot and over grooms - it's not his fault, he's unhappy because he's uncomfortable so we give him hugs. Ahem. You might guess he humours our misguided anthropomorphic projections whilst remaining pragmatic and reasonably (and proportionately) didactic. However, there's something galling about forking over £50 for a check up for him to simply write a prescription for more steroids (another £6) which all takes a matter of 120 seconds and costs him no more than a green-lipped mussell flavoured doggy treat (most dogs won't touch 'em, so I'm told) and a bit of cleaning up (puppy loses lots of fur due to his malfunctioning endocrine system as a result of steroid use to combat allergies to grass, pollen, dust and dust mites and dust mite feces and his own hair and dirt and floor polish and carpets and biscuit mites - it's endless). Hence cross at the end of my scoring analogy. Bored? Sorry, I'll put this thing to bed. OK, services great, vet great, parking difficult sometimes but no problem, cost extortionate! But then, maybe we've the only 'roid guzzling allergen magnet in Cardiff and it's our own fault for not taking the shitzu when we had the chance. Cruel fate or not, Martin Francis is still a top quality vet.
