Having read about this gem on Yelp, I'd long been hoping to make a trip over so that I could…read moreexperience it for myself. We'd tasted some of the fabulous Wharfebank beer back in December at the Christmas Yelp do, and so I'd been dying for an excuse to have a further tasting. First off, I have to say it's a really stunning pub. The interior is decorated wonderfully, matching a cosy feel to a modern vibe, and yet still feeling like a trad pub. There's a fireplace centrally for winter nights, and huge windows that can be opened up for sunny days like last Monday. And then there's the terrace. Wowser! The garden and terrace out the back are simply stunning. There's a special terrace menu, with fresh salads and such to enjoy, and you can go right to the bottom to watch the stream flow by. Picturesque, serene and simply wonderful. Having read about the excellent chef I was looking forward to a high end pub lunch. I ordered the steak, however, which in hindsight probably wasn't the best choice to allow the chef to flex some magic. It wasn't disappointing; it came just how I asked (medium rare) and was beautifully seasoned - something I'm not used to of a steak dinner! The chips were lovely, salad grand, and peppercorn sauce very more-ish! All in all, I decided I'd have to come back and choose something new adventurous to really appreciate the food here. (Sunday lunch, perhaps!) The experience was rounded off by a half of their own beer, in the sun, and I was then a firm fan. The staff are fabulous (helping order and such) and it really is a must visit spot!

Shocking! Doubt I'll be back anytime soon, such a shame.

Very friendly staff greeted us as we entered and the dining room was busy which was a good sign given that it is under new ownership for just a year or so now. We ate in the newer section of the pub which had sky lights and was very light with a great view over the valley. The menu seemed quite simple and to focus on local type dishes and at first glance, I thought the menu looked a little pricey for lunches and so decided on a sandwich (I think it was £6) while many of the dishes were up in the £8-10 range). When the sandwiches came, they came with a small salad of very fresh greens which was the first surprise. Then the second surprise came in the form of a pickle plate containing a selection of beetroot, pickled onions (small (so not too strong in flavour), but numerous), pickled cabbage and a pickle/chutney all of which we were told were made on site. Honestly, I'd read it on the menu and not really given it any thought, but the presentation of the pickle plate was great and their flavours were sublime. For me the pickle tray was the star of the meal and tied the local/home-style together perfectly. The sandwiches were very tasty and combined with the salad and pickles offered fantastic value for money. The sandwich (coronation chicken), wasn't too overly spiced and the bread was thick cut and very tasty. Others in my party were equally impressed. My only regret, given the flavour and quality of the pickled onions and pickle/chutney, I should have got the cheese sandwich as I bet combined, the three elements would be amazing! At this point I'm looking forward to going back and will be trying some of the more expensive dishes on the strength of my experience here. If all their dishes are made with the same quality of ingredients and given the same attention, then I'm sure it won't be long before this becomes a very well known local spot.

A restaurant within a tiny old cottage on the main road that winds its way through Otley, the Jewel was recommended to me by a family member as one of the better places to have a curry. And so I found myself with a bunch of mates at the Jewel, where we were lucky to get a table despite the fact that it was a week day. The guys who seated us were pretty friendly and for the rest of the evening the service was good - something you don't always get when you go to a restaurant as a bunch of "lads". Anyhow, the korma I had was spot-on, and the bhaji's I had for starter (and the yogurty sauce I smothered them in) were some of the best I've ever had. You can eat here for around £12-15 a head, which, considering the food and the service, ain't half bad.

Being as Otley doesn't have a plethora of choice (a few take aways and a few Indian restaurants from what we could glean) we opted to dine here. It's pretty easy to find, although tucked away from the main roads, and when we entered it was empty but for one chap. The atmosphere was lacking as a result of this, but it was a bank holiday, and the staff were very friendly - so it didn't bother me! We sat down, ordered some drinks, and took in the menu and surroundings. There's a fish tank and underwater scenes along the back wall, which I'd much rather have sat next to, but in fairness I'd have only been hypnotised by the ebb and flow of little fins, so I'd have been poor company were that the case. The decor is pretty snazzy and different - I'm a fan of the fish wall. The menu surprised me even more than the under water scene, even offering up ostrich and venison dishes. Had I been a little braver, I'd have given them a try, but after discussing with the chap taking our orders, I went for the Gost Patal. I do like a mild coconut curry, but lately I'd been craving a bit of spice and this dish seemed ideal. We shared a naan, some mushroom pilau, and saag paneer to accompany our meals, and that was more than enough for two. In fact, unless you've some control, there's no need to order that much. (Someone, not me, left with a stomach ache from over eating... ) Considering a main meal comes in at around £7, I was really impressed. The dishes were plentiful, which is fabulous, and the naan was incredibly light and sweet. I often find naans cloying and thick, but this one was perfect. The rice was grand, but the main affair was outstanding. The gost patal was the most delicious dish I've tasted, with a rich spicy flavour, delectably well cooked lamb, a swirl of cream, and every mouthful was a delight. The only thing I'd criticise is that it was really oily - which formed little pools in the dish. It's not healthy, but my word it tasted good. And then came the paneer - that fella stole the show. I've never had such good saag paneer; it was creamy, sweet, and incredibly more-ish. I'd highly recommend a visit if you're in town. The cool fish decor, friendly staff, and intensely flavoursome food has put this place in my top five curry experiences. Hopefully I'll get to come back soon, on a busier night, and see the place in full swing. Give them a go!
