Harveys, you're the kinda place a lady could grow to love. Your Asian Chicken Salad with coriander, mint, peanuts, coconut and tamarind dressing might just be the perfect lunch for a Summer day. Just a note: there's two slices of sweet potato at the bottom of the salad. This is a delicious surprise and adds great texture to an already brilliant salad, but for me being allergic to sweet potato, it wasn't as much of a delicious surprise others might find it to be. It wasn't listed on the menu, otherwise, I wouldn't have ordered the salad or would have asked for it without it. Anyway, I digress. The few times I've visited Harveys it's been a welcoming, bustling but never too busy for the wait staff to greet you with a warm smile and glass of water as you peruse the menu. They make a Merlo brew sing and the spiced & salted nuts are a tasty something to nibble on as you wait for your party or as a side to any of the great meals. Harveys I'm only new to your ways and I'm afraid there's far too much choice on the menu for me to quit getting to know you now. Expect an update to this, dear Yelpers, I think my exploration of finding out just why people speak* of this James Street icon with such high praise is only just beginning. *It is usually hushed because it can get pretty busy on weekends. I suppose they don't want word getting out. I get that.

For a late morning, busy environment, service was quick, and drink orders were always received within minutes. The space is nice, open and light and lends itself to the modern Australian style of food. We grabbed breakfast, and chose the poached eggs on Sourdough. Overall, the meal was good, but not great. It was quickly prepared, and was exactly as described. The OJ was freshly squeezed, and heavy on the pulp, just the way I like it. It's a simple menu, with little in terms of 'trademarks' unlike surrounding restaurants. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, and you could do a lot worse than Harveys. It's a 'safe' choice. Somewhere I'd take a client for a meeting, but probably not an out of town friend wanting to see the best of what Brisbane has to offer.

It's rare these days to find somewhere that just does standard Modern Australian dining that was so prolific in the early 2000's. Everything around seems to need to have some zany spin, foreign infusion or share plates, but when you want to go somewhere to just have a good quality salad or a steak there's few that keep it simple and good. Harvey's is one of those places that I always frequent when I can't be bothered deciding where else to go. The food is consistently good quality, they have a great wine list, and it's always easy to get a table without a booking. The haloumi crumbed schnitzel has got to be one of my favourites on the menu, along with the wagyu charcuterie platter, but they also are consistent with a good range of salads and a nicely cooked steak if that's what suits. They offer Merlo coffee and the restaurant has a great view of James St without feeling exposed, and the place is usually full of boomers in white pants, so you know it's at least got a semblance of class. Definitely worth checking out if you just want a good meal without the frills.

Looking at the menu makes me so hungry. Great place for meeting a friend or work night out. Very stylish and warming environment. Not pretentious Worth the James St prices. You will not be disappointed. Full bar and beautiful outdoor area to enjoy the Brisbane sunshine

I've been to Harvey's both for breakfast and dinner and have highly enjoyed the experience both times. If I had to choose I would say that I probably enjoyed the dinner more, but my meal was exceptional (slow-roasted pork belly with sweet potato and fennel) and we had a beautiful bottle of Italian wine. In saying this, during the day it's a great spot to hang out when the weather is good, and the outdoor seating adds to the casual yet classy ambience. When I went for breakfast I had ricotta-buttermilk pikelets with caramlized banana. The food looked beautiful on the plate with the banana still half in its skin and slightly charred, it was delicious. My partner had the potato and feta roesti which I happily tasted, and it too hit the spot. Harvey's is probably a touch more expensive than the average brekky place, but the portions are generous and it's still quite reasonable. Harvey's is one of those places where, if you're at a loss as to where to eat, it always satisfies. On the weekends it's advisable to book though, cause this place ain't a secret!

The menu lends itself to sharing with small & large plates on offer, but if you're feeling hungry, you can have it all for yourself. Small share plates range from $8- $22, & large share plates range from $22-$42. We highly recommend trying the Pork & beef ragu pappardelle ($24), and the pan fried house gnocchi with guanciale, lemon sage & truffled peccorino. These two dishes were so heavenly. The pork & beef ragu was so tender & full of flavour, & the Pappardelle pasta was amazing. The gnocchi was cooked perfectly;light & fluffy like clouds. The pecorino & guanciale gave the right amount of saltiness, & the beautiful addition of the lemon sage was devine! Yum, yum, yum! We also ordered a side of the sweet potato wedges with taragon aioli. This is a MUST! So tasty! Service at the time was a little mixed, but it was only their first night, & it improved as the night wore on. We love what they've done with the place, especially the Frank & Mimi mural, & some old pinball machines near the bar. We unfortunately were way too full to fit in dessert, so we will definitely be back!

Very decadent and can even be shared if you aren't feeling too greedy. The coffee is yummy and service is excellent. The moment you signal that you're ready to order (sailing a little flag on the boat which decorates the table) the waiters swoop in. It's nice because you aren't heckled or bothered like in the USA. When you are ready to order, the mast goes up and the service comes running. The restaurant is pretty loud because of the concrete floors, so I try to avoid it on the weekends or grab a table outside if at all possible. We visited early one weekday morning for a lazy breakfast at the new kid on the block. I selected from a large menu which unfortunately didn't identify which dishes were gluten free. The staff were very happy to help however, and advised all of the breads could be substituted with gluten free versions so I could satisfy my toasted sandwich cravings. I opted for the Truffled Cheese Toastie with gruyere cheese and truffled salsa. It was presented on a wooden board with fresh greens and red onion to help liven it up. My beverage was aptly named "Sunshine" and contained a mixture of pineapple, orange, apple and strawberry. All up I paid $22.50 for my breakfast and was happy with the serving size and quality of everything. It was fairly quiet at that point with most of Bulimba at work, but I can imagine it getting busier on weekends or Friday afternoons for after-work drinks and food. My toastie was golden and crunchy and the truffle filling was gorgeously decadent when paired with the copious amounts of gruyere. Surprisingly I ate all of the greens and found they helped avoid getting overwhelmed with the big flavours on my plate. The juice was fresh with just the right balance between the fruits and was definitely filling for what I paid. Service was friendly and accommodating and the food arrived quickly. As we were paying our bill I noticed an array of baked goods in the front cabinet with some interesting looking gluten-free options. I think I can see at least one other visit to Ambrosia & Co in my future..

Patrons are happily packed into this small establishment, with inside and outside seating. At first you think the place is busy because they offer carefully selected craft beers on tap. The…read moremenu is hearty and unless you have super-human eating ability you really won't be able to experience the best of the menu as a solo diner. Still with me? Okay let's begin. I stopped in for lunch and dined solo mid-week. Despite being school holidays it was relatively quite. This is definitely a place that needs the atmosphere of many diners to make it feel like (what I imagine) a true Honky-Donk American bar would be like. The waitresses on duty were so lovely and polite. She explained the flag system they have. Just pop the flag atop the menu holder and it signals to them you would like to ask them a question / order / ask them the meaning of life. This worked fairly well with but a handful of patrons, but I do wonder how it goes when they're at capacity. Defeating the very purpose of dining in an American-style venue, I ordered the Mad Dog Tortilla Salad - grilled chicken, mixed lettuce, smoky bacon, tomatoes, avocado, corn, beans (green), goats cheese, sour cream, house made dressing and tortilla chips. It's a hefty salad and it's probably an illusion to think it's remotely healthy, but I did figure it was more virtuous than a burger or hoagie. As far as salads go, it was filling, a good balance of all ingredients but, and this is entirely personal preference, something this robust needs to be served in a bowl not a silver platter. It's just easier eating. All in all: a solid addition to Bulimba and gives them a part of the Brisbane fixation on US-style eateries.

I pursued the menu and the first thing I thought is "YES 'MURICA!" Eager to try them out, I mentioned to my DH when he was finally 'settled in' (and in the midst of removing his shoes) that I'd like to get drinks to 'celebrate.' He put back on his one shoe, and off we went! We ended up sharing a 'Southern Special' 10 Hour Braised Brisket with our chosen sweet potato fries and Bourbon glazed carrots. There's a few of those specials (it's on the second to last page of the menu, just after the BBQ page) - reasonably priced and they come with two sides. I'm not a big meat eater, but daaaammmn that brisket is fiiiinnnnne. And naturally, I came for the drinks - I got the Chipotle and Grapefruit margarita -- perfectly sea salt rimmed Mason wide-mouth jars. Yummily sweet with a nice heat at the back of the throat. I winkled my nose at my DH's choice of Long Island Iced Tea, because I was being a snob as that drink was my 'young, stupid, cheap, and often watered-down preferred drink' - but I am pleased when I tasted it -- good mix and definitely not watered down (just don't let the ice melt, k?). We also ended our meal sharing 'Mum's Milk Punch' (my original desire for one of their Chocolate Peanut Butter milkshake was denied by DH - he's looking out for me). I enjoyed looking at other people's meals, and had a giggle when I glanced at a pretty lady taking a bite out of one of their German hot dogs (...sorry, I know.) In all, we have been impressed, especially as it is a sister restaurant to La Quinta next door (we weren't terribly impressed with the food there).
