Twinings Earl Grey to start the day!
    Amy M.

A girlfriend who works in Milton has been campaigning for me to visit Comfort At My Table for several months. Obviously she got to me as it was the first spot that entered my head when returning from some early morning volunteering at St Lucia, craving breakfast. I assumed it was on Park Road, but later found out it was away from the main strip on Cribb Street. The café is unexpectedly spacious with cute and cheery decor; "a perfect place for a mum-and-sister date," I thought to myself as we were seated. I ordered their avo on toast which I'm confident is the best in Brisbane... I've eaten at almost all joints mentioned here http://www.theurbanlist.com/brisbane/a-list/breakfast-champions and here http://www.theurbanlist.com/brisbane/a-list/brisbanes-best-avocado-toast-round-two and can't believe they haven't made the list! I have no idea where they source their sourdough from but it was incredible and the star of the dish alongside the ripe, creamy avocado. It's all in the extras for me and this one was served with crisp rocket, a drizzle of olive oil, just the right amount of Danish fetta, a slice of grilled lemon and a spoonful of the best tomato relish I've ever had. I also ordered a side of bacon which for $4 was an extremely generous portion. My husband ordered the one pan fry up (sans eggs, but with a side of roast tomatoes) and an iced chocolate and was a big fan of both. Presentation of our meals (and every other meal we eyed off!) was A+ and the service was friendly and fast. It's obvious that savoury won my brain over today but next time I vow to order the Banoffee waffles!

Ok so I didn't count on how popular this little gem is and didn't think to book. Booking is a must for Sunday breakfast/brunch. After our 40 minute wait for a table (purely our fault) we were seated outside which I was happy about because although the inside is amazingly decorated, the noise from the enthused crowd of diners was slightly overwhelming. This is a testimony to the popularity of this establishment. The menu is pleasing with endless GF options. I opted for the Avo on Toast with a side of smoked salmon. I washed it down with a warming coffee chased with a pineapple and mint slushie. The staff were friendly and good humoured despite being under pressure. Overall we enjoyed a lovely ladies brunch and all said we would be back.

Upon arriving, I was a little underwhelmed by the interior, as I was expecting this decked-out country girl style of a cafe -my impression from all the reviews. That was disappointment number one. Then, I was excited to check out their menu and munch, but was greeted by a waitress who seemed less than enthused at seating me and my mum. Their menu was decent, though didn't actually impress me one bit, so I decided on the zucchini and smoked salmon fritters and French Toast (12.8). At 1pm, I could forgive the fact that they ran out of the fritters, and so I went for the French croissant with apple cardamom + etc (16). The waitress seemed to try to tell me that both were sweet and a bit similar - or maybe she didn't - I really couldn't understand her... so we ended up getting it. The french toast was so dense and not a bit fluffy like french toast should be, and the berries and ricotta was a big pile of mush with no interest in the flavoring. It was, however, better than the poor-looking French croissant. Now, I understand that French croissants are different than American croissants, but this one was just oozed salty butter when I took a bite, which I was rather dismayed at. Maybe that's the way people like it here, but it was a soggy pastry of salty butter. The cardamom apples weren't too great either, so I ended up dousing the little croissant that I ate with the syrup and eating the candied walnuts (which was the best part). We were very unhappy - and in the states - if customers are unhappy - the chef tries to appease the diners with something on the house. We complained, and who were we kidding? They just asked if we wanted to order more savory items! There was no way I was going to try more after the French Toast. Maybe they were just having a bad day, or maybe I had ordered the wrong things, but needless to say, this is one place I would not recommend! I'd much rather make a trip out to New Farm for Banneton or Au Cirque.

What a little diamond of a place this is. And right smack in between Coro Drive and Milton Road? Are you kidding me? This place is more appropriate as the quaint little cafe for Hampton Court Palace, not situated in the middle of Busy Cribb Street. And yet Comfort At My Table is immensely popular, obviously. I've learnt that if you want a seat in a busy place like this, you go to breakfast early; so I did. 8am to be exact, and by the time I was winding down and sipping my last coffee, the place was so packed that staff looked frantic. I'd say it's so popular because you just don't expect such a gorgeous place to be along such a busy street and near so many businesses. So here's what I'm talking about: 1. Intricate, intertwining designed chairs appropriate for a garden party; 2. A quaint floral sign asking you to wait to be seated; 3. Cream and pastel pink coloured walls; 4. A counter sign saying "Smile! It confuses people" (cute!); 5. A range of decadent and delicious savoury and sweet treats at the front counter; 6. A new novelty spoon every time you order a hot drink. Let me digress about the last point there. My first coffee came with a novelty spoon from Cockington Green. You know the novelty spoons you pick up at different tourist locations with their respective locations at the end of the handle? Yeah, those. Anyway, my second coffee was a lake I cannot remember in New Zealand, and my friend's spoon was an Australian Gold novelty spoon. That alone was such a treat for me and I found it so delightful. Not only that, but the service was exquisite. I literally had to run out to give my friend directions and the lovely staff were more than happy to mind my seat and my bag, which is something out of their jurisdiction, so I found that heartwarming. The food was also delicious and I was immensely happy about that, because Comfort At My Table has won numerous awards and been nominated countless times for their quality food. And all their meals are so affordable, a real steal for the quality. This place is definitely a new favourite of mine and you only have to see the coffee line curling out the door to realise I'm not alone in that thought.

I recently went to Comfort at My Table with a group of girlfriends for lunch. I'd never heard of this place but was pleasantly surprised. Tucked away in the business district of Milton, this is a great little find, perfect for breakfast or lunch. I ordered the Comfort Salad which had all sorts of yummy things in it--rocket, pear, honeyed almonds, sheeps' feta. For $4 you have the option of adding a piece of grilled chicken breast or smoked salmon. I added the chicken and it went beautifully with the rest of the salad. With items like "Croissant French toast with bacon, poached pear, ricotta, maple syrup and honey roasted almonds" on their breakfast menu, there are definitely things I want to come back and try. In my opinion, Comfort at My Table is well-priced and good value for money. My lunch cost $16 and was fresh, flavoursome and filling. Breakfast prices range from $7 to $15. As a very girly-looking cafe, men, you'll have to look past the pink walls and roses and go in and taste something! Who knows--with all the women in their, it might be a good place to pick up.

The baristas are exceptionally skilled, and there is a selection of roasts to choose from. While I normally like my coffee black, something that isn't too hard to make, I've had a few flat whites from Penny which have been excellent. A friend of mine asked if they're able to pull a piccolo using soy milk, without the milk splitting. Despite indicating that the barista don't need to try if they haven't made one before, they produced one (after two failed attempts) by slowly adjusting the extraction to the point where they could add a shot to soy milk without producing soy cheese. Doing this despite explicitly not needing to is the sort of above and beyond that earns long-term customers. The food is similarly stellar. The avo on sourdough may at first blush seem like a pricier version of what everyone else is doing. The flavours in Penny's version are, however, inventive and balanced to a point I haven't had elsewhere. There's a nice balance between the feta, dukkah and pomegranate where you can taste all of them without one overpowering the other. The vegetabowl is similarly great. There's just enough of each ingredient that you can taste them, without the dish being overpowered by one note. Penny's interior makes maximal use of the space. There are comfortably sized tables out front and inside, and some bar seating by the espresso machine. The best seats in the house, though, are out back, and include a few longer tables. The staff at Penny are attentive, friendly and great at pulling a coffee and making food.

Being a humanities student at the University of Queensland, I practically live in the Social Science and Humanities Library, where Merlo is located. They have probably the best position of any of the cafes on campus, connecting to the library but also having plenty of outdoor seating jetting out into the iconic sandstone encompassed great court area. I have spent all too many hours sitting with a coffee here, watching the crows, chatting with other students, reading, writing, and even having meetings with my thesis supervisor. Merlo gets pretty busy but they are well staffed for it and even when there is a giant line up you always get a smile. They churn their coffees out pretty quickly so you never have much of a wait for either takeaway or table service. And the coffee is good. I regularly get either their smooth latte, delicious iced coffee in summer or delectable hot chocolate with marsh mellows in winter. The food is also good. They have a nice selection of foccacias and toasties as well as some chocolate cookies that are true indulgence. I adore this Merlo, not only because the service is good and the coffee and food hit the spot but because it is beautifully situated and has become such a prominent part of my university years. I totally recommend BarMerlo UQ if you find yourself on campus.

They serve a variety of specialty caffeinated drinks, baked goods and both a full breakfast and lunch menu. The lunch menu is vietnamese inspired and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. The fresh rice paper rolls stuffed with lettuce, herbs, pork and noodles were prepared perfectly. Too often places over steep the rice paper wrapper in water for way too long, making it too soft; the rice paper wrapper here is served, as the Italians would describe it, "al dente." The combination vermicelli salad had a delightful variety of flavourful toppings, including: BBQ beef, sausage, spring rolls, and sugarcane prawn cakes. The pho, noodle soup, was served with the more traditional 'Shahe fen' style rice noodles (linguini shaped) rather than the thin vermacelli noodles used in many American and Australian restaurants; a delightful touch. The servers are all dressed quite sharply in white collared shirts and the cafe has a lovely water serving station with your choice of orange or lime infused ice water (presented in beautiful glass dispensers).
