I was a client of Dr. Budde and Alta Vista Veterinary for years. I think Dr. Budde is smart,…read moreknowledgeable, and a very capable veterinarian. I continued taking my dogs there despite the higher cost because I believed they were receiving good medical care. Appointments were almost always significantly late, but for years I gave her grace because I could see that she gave each patient her undivided attention rather than rushing. I knew I would want the same if one of my dogs were seriously ill, so I simply accepted that time had little meaning at Alta Vista. Over time, though, I became increasingly uncomfortable with her demeanor. Owners weren't allowed to accompany their pets into the exam area, and afterward Dr. Budde often discussed medical issues very loudly in the waiting room. Conversations could become lengthy lectures that felt more like being scolded than advised. She also tended to overshare about her own life, which wouldn't bother me except when everyone's appointments were already running very late. The staff also seemed progressively more unhappy. My final visit was almost a year ago. I waited to write this until my dogs were fully established elsewhere. The previous year, I had specifically pointed out a couple of tiny, temporary bumps on my dog. They would basically pop up and be gone in a couple of weeks, like a little hard pimple. Dr. Budde essentially called me a helicopter dog mom, said dogs, particularly this breed, commonly get little bumps, and told me to "calm down."(All I did was mention it during intake.) She suggested applying an Epsom salt-soaked washcloth and said unless they became larger or burst, they weren't something to worry about. A year later, my dog had one small bump at her annual exam. Based on those instructions, I didn't mention it. My appointment was at 10:00 a.m. At approximately 11:15, a tech finally took my dog into the back. Other waiting clients eventually left and rescheduled. My dog remained back there far longer than usual, and when I asked the front desk what was happening, I essentially got a shrug. Shortly after noon, Dr. Budde ARRIVED at the clinic. They took my dog into the back before the veterinarian even arrived, and she didn't show up until 2 hours after my appointment time. Instead of seeing patients immediately, Dr. Budde first had an impromptu staff discussion about the phone system, then talked about where she'd gone to dinner the night before. My dog was finally returned after being away from me for over an hour. She was agitated and whimpering, which was extremely unlike her. Dr. Budde then came out and loudly lectured me in the waiting area for not disclosing the bump, suggesting I might have been trying to save money and accusing me of neglecting it. She said she had sliced it off to examine it under the microscope without discussing that with me beforehand. She said everything she saw was fine and that she wouldn't charge for the test, although I now needed to buy ointment because the spot had been cut. While she was speaking, I looked down at my whimpering dog to see why she was upset. Dr. Budde loudly and in a very snippy voice said, "I am speaking to you. You will look at me when I speak to you, or I can just walk away." That was the moment I knew I would never return. The most frustrating part was that I had followed Dr. Budde's own advice from the previous year. I had raised these bumps as a concern and been told I was overreacting. A year later, I was publicly accused of neglect and possibly trying to save money for doing exactly what she'd told me to do. There was no apology for being more than two hours late or for my dog spending approximately an hour separated from me while we waited for the veterinarian to arrive. Ironically, she ended by telling me I was doing a good job with my dog and recommending a dental cleaning. She said a dental special was starting the following month and she "would not be mad" if I waited to save money. I paid the bill and never returned. I don't question Dr. Budde's intelligence or veterinary knowledge. That's why I stayed as long as I did despite the cost and chronic delays. But excellent medical knowledge doesn't excuse disrespectful treatment, publicly accusing clients of neglect or financial motives, contradicting previous guidance, or performing a procedure on their pet without discussing it first. I wanted excellent veterinary care, but I also needed a practice where they treated both my dogs and me with respect.

Finding a good vet that is at a privately owned hospital has been a challenge and after reading their website and hearing good things from a couple of colleagues, I drove over an hour each way for appointments with each of my dogs. I saw Dr. Cauvel and was very impressed with his knowledge, he recognized it was better for me to handle my super excitable malinois vs have her go into the back for her vaccination, and most importantly, when I presented him with a more complex issue on one of my dogs and I presented my thoughts, he didn't treat me like my background was somehow a threat like I have experienced before. He went out of his way to review some information and photos I emailed after the appointment and we decided on what to try. I was really thrilled with my experience with this vet at this practice with both of my dogs, and despite the drive will definitely be coming back for future needs.

I strongly advise against trusting this clinic with any major surgery. I brought my rescue cat here…read morefor treatment of nose cancer, which they had already diagnosed as being present throughout his entire nose. Despite this, they completely ignored one side of his nose during treatment and committed multiple acts of severe professional negligence. 1. Failure to Follow Agreed Treatment Plan: I paid for and consulted on an aggressive, complete nose removal. The consulting veterinarian explicitly stated that the surgery "would be a waste" unless the entire nose was removed because leaving any cancer behind would cause it to return aggressively. Instead, a general practice surgeon--whom I was never permitted to speak with--made a unilateral mid-surgery decision to perform a minimal "scrape," leaving 2/3 of the tumor and visible cancerous bulbs intact. 2. Complete Violation of Informed Consent: If the surgeon did not feel capable or comfortable performing the agreed-upon nose removal once my cat was sedated, they had a strict medical and ethical obligation to call me from the operating room. By failing to contact me, they denied me my legal right to decline a substandard procedure, wake my cat up, and immediately transfer him to a qualified veterinary oncologist or specialist who could perform the surgery correctly. 3. Total Lack of Post-Operative Communication: When I picked up my cat after major surgery, the clinic provided absolutely zero communication or discharge instructions. I had to discover via text message that they failed to complete the agreed-upon service. They then falsely claimed the cancer was only on one side, directly contradicting their own previous diagnosis and what was clearly visible. Because of their failure to remove the tumor as promised, the cancer returned with extreme aggression. I had to euthanize my cat because this clinic robbed him of his only opportunity to receive a proper, complete surgery from a qualified professional. I have the full text message logs, emails, and images confirming this timeline. A formal complaint regarding this professional negligence and failure to obtain informed consent is being filed directly with the State Veterinary Board. Do not trust them with your animal's life. Response to owner : There is a fundamental difference between a "medically complex" adjustment and a complete change in surgical scope without owner consent. The explicit, documented purpose of Tom Tom's consultation was a complete nose removal. I was explicitly told by your staff that a partial removal or "minimal scrape" would not be effective given the aggressive nature of his cancer. Yet, while he was sedated, Dr. Eileen made the unilateral decision to pivot to a minimal scrape, leaving active cancerous bulbs behind, without ever calling me to get my informed consent. By failing to call me from the operating room, you denied me my legal right as a client to decline a sub-standard procedure. Had I been contacted, I would have immediately instructed the clinic to wake him up so I could transfer him to a qualified veterinary oncologist or specialist who was capable of performing the agreed-upon surgery. Furthermore, your clinic attempted to retain 100% of the funds for a complete nose removal until I forced accountability through a series of extensive emails. Your own text message records confirm that the surgeon only focused on one side of the nose, directly contradicting the agreed-upon treatment plan. This is a clear issue of professional negligence and a failure to obtain informed consent, not a misunderstanding of "expectations." I will not be having further private discussions with management to help cover up this clinic's lack of informed consent. The time for discussion was when Tom Tom was on the operating table. All further correspondence from me will be handled directly through the formal complaint I am filing with the State Veterinary Board.

It's been 8 years since I last stepped foot in Groveway Pet Hospital. My last experience with them…read moreleft me with an extremely bad taste in my mouth, so much so that I swore I'd never go back to them. However, my big boy Chomper is 12+, and last January I noticed he was really struggling to do normal things. I changed his routine and started hand-making his food, and he instantly got better. But having had another dog who was the same mixed breed and who showed the same signs towards the end of life, I knew Chomper's time was limited. Then last week he had a bad morning, and seeing he was in pain, I relented and called Groveway hoping that they'd just prescribe him some medication for pain management. I was able to bring him in that same day, and of course the first thing he does is urinate all over their waiting room floor like he had never whizzed in his life (and I JUST let him relieve himself outside beforehand). I apologized and offered to clean it up, but the receiption staff and another staff member quickly began to clean it up without hesitation and reassured me that it was ok. We entered into the examination room, and from the very beginning vet tech Stella was kind, polite and asked poignant quesitons. Soon after Dr. Powell came in, and she was equally kind, polite and wanting to help my boy. Dr. Powell was wonderful - she was compassionate and at the same time willing to have the difficult conversations. We decided on bloodwork that would take about 30 mins or so. Needing a urine sample, Stella escorted us outside to the back area with room to roam and a bench to sit at. After getting the sample, Stella made every effort to make sure my boy was comfortable - she invited us to stay in the backyard to enjoy the fresh air and sun, she brought out a blanket for Chompet to lie on, and she brought both of us water as well. Needless to say, after my last experience with Groveway, I was hesitant to contact them thinking that they might somehow try to hustle me again. I am so glad that I called them. The staff there were nothing but professional and courteous. Stella was accommodating and loved on my boy like he was her own dog. And Dr. Powell's compassion and willingness to help was nothing short of amazing. We didn't get the results we wanted, and that's just part of a dog getting old. But we have another checkup scheduled in a month, and I'm looking forward to the staff at Groveway spoling my Chomper again.

In February 2026, I brought my dog to Groveway Veterinary Hospital because she was repeatedly…read morebringing up saliva and was unable to eat. At the time, we described her symptoms as vomiting, although we later learned she was experiencing regurgitation. Three abdominal X-rays were taken and reviewed by an outside veterinary radiologist. The report found no radiographic evidence of an obstruction and recommended further evaluation if her symptoms did not improve. I was informed that no foreign body or other abnormalities had been identified, and we proceeded with supportive treatment for presumed gastroenteritis. Unfortunately, my dog continued regurgitating saliva despite receiving an anti-nausea injection. She was unable to eat or keep anything down. I called Groveway three separate times that same day to report her ongoing symptoms. Each time, a male front-desk employee dismissed my concerns, attributing her symptoms to eating too quickly. At no point was I informed that my concerns had been escalated to a veterinarian or advised to bring her back for further evaluation. The following day, I took my dog to an emergency veterinary hospital, where an esophageal obstruction was discovered. She required an emergency endoscopy to remove the obstruction, followed by treatment for esophagitis. When I followed up with Groveway, the treating veterinarian told me she had been unaware of my repeated calls and apologized. I appreciated her apology, but I was extremely concerned that my reports of persistent symptoms had apparently never reached her. I subsequently spoke with a director of the veterinary group to express my concerns and request reimbursement for the initial visit. Much of our conversation focused on defending the hospital's decision not to perform more extensive imaging, with the explanation that comprehensive imaging is not standard practice for an initial episode of vomiting. While I understand that not every case warrants extensive imaging, my primary concern was that my dog's symptoms continued despite treatment and my repeated requests for guidance were not escalated appropriately. The director acknowledged my feedback regarding communication, but I was left dissatisfied with how this aspect of the incident was addressed. I recognize that veterinary medicine involves diagnostic uncertainty, and I do not expect every condition to be identified immediately. However, I do expect repeated reports of persistent symptoms to be taken seriously, particularly when the initial radiology report specifically recommends further evaluation if symptoms do not improve. Thankfully, my dog recovered, but this experience severely damaged my trust in Groveway. I hope the hospital takes this feedback seriously and reviews its procedures for communicating urgent concerns to veterinary staff. No pet owner should have to repeatedly seek help for an animal whose condition is not improving, only to discover afterward that the treating veterinarian was unaware of those concerns.
