RIP OFF. Do not take your car here. They charged me $1300 to replace a catalytic converter that had been stolen. The parts they used were cheap aftermarket stuff. My friend went to Flushing for the same issue and they charged her $400. Harry's does not provide an itemized receipt like honest mechanics do. They just throw a random number at you and can't justify why the costs add up to that number. This is the hallmark of shady mechanics. When I asked how much the parts costs and labor, they started scrawling prices down on a piece of paper that they just started making up. They figured out the root of my car's problem and fixed it right away with excellent pricing. I thought Long and hard about giving them a bad review , but they deserve it. I had a lot of work done on my 1992 Volvo 740 wagon ($5,700) they like Cash BTW. Anyway, the quality of their work is mediocre at best. And their knowldge of Volvo's of which they are supposed to be experts at is lacking . Case in point , they told me you have to drop the gas tank to change the in tank fuel pump because it doesn't have an access hole from the interior when infact it does have an access hole. I also told Kevin to use nothing but OEM Volvo parts, when in reality he used cheap aftermarket parts . Case in point, the A/C compressor he put on was a piece of Junk that was leaking as I found out at the Volvo dealer . They also took off my splash shield and threw in in the garbage, when I Asked Kevin what happened to it he didn't say anything and just gave me a stupid look like he didnt know what I was talking about . Unless youre a hipster from Williamsburg or Bushwick with a Volvo I would stay away! I now take my car to Hassel Volvo, Where I know they will use genuine Volvo parts give me a 12. Month 12 ,000 mile warranty on repairs by factory trained mechanics and get the repair right the first time. So i induct Harry Into the Hall of Shame Shame, Shame on you !!! And maybe Nys tax and the IRS should pay these guys a visit for all the people who paid them in Cash. Hmmmm ?? read more

After being dissapointed with some other mechanics that I found on Yelp, I came across Harry's on the car talk forums. He is by far the best mechanic I've seen in New York, and I've been looking for awhile (see my other reviews). I feel like he is honest, always describes the problem well to me, and he's a good communicator. I recently took my car in for another repair, and he fixed my A/C for free... Apparently it was just the issue of an internal switch being broken, but my other mechanic had quoted me $75 just to diagnose the problem. So.. I've finally found my new Mechanic. A few months back I went to Harry's to remove a giant bolt from my tire. While the car was on the lift Kevin told me that he noticed that the breaks were shot. If I didn't attend to it right away, the metal against metal could cause a fire. He told me to bring the car back the following morning. I wound up bring it back two days later but Harry's shop had a fire that morning, so I had to go to another mechanic. Much to my surprise the new mechanic informed me that my brakes were absolutely fine, and didn't need to be repaired. Kevin always seemed like such a nice, authentic guy. I usually have a mechanic in the Bronx that I go to *faithfully*. And by faithfully, I mean FAITHFULLY. I now live in Brooklyn, but will commute all the way to the Bronx because I don't want anyone else touching my car. He gives me great work at super affordable prices annnnnnndddd I get to stuff my face with pastellitos while I wait. :D So you could only imagine my disdain when I found my car to be making a crazy grinding noise one Friday night while going to work. This wouldn't have been a big deal had it not been for the insane work schedule I was going to have that weekend - two 16 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday meant that getting my car fixed would be so difficult. Let me also add... Since getting my car, I've abandoned the bus and train completely. Insert minor panic attack here when I thought I'd have to publicly transport everywhere. Anyway, I started randomly dialing a bunch of mechanics in Brooklyn that would be open on Sunday so that I could try to get my car fixed; the choices were slim, but I came across Harrys and gave them a call. Kevin picked up and after explaining to him my dilemma, agreed to come in to work on Sunday so that he could fix my car for me early in the morning before work. First brownie point goes -here- ! I was able to change my schedule around so instead we met up on Saturday morning at around 6:30am. I had to be at work for 7:30, so Kevin so kindly gave me a drop to the train station. Fast forward to me getting out of the car, only to find out that the L train does not work on weekends, and then comes to panic attack. (Which I'm sure was evident to the strangers around me who tried to explain to me how to get to the city. "Oh, you just walk to such and such and hop on this and then take that..." followed by me shouting "I'M NOT FROM HERE! What does that mean?!") I call Kevin to explain to him my dilemma, and you know what he does? Picks me up, and gives me a RIDE TO WORK. Yes. You read that right. He was nice enough to give me a drop to work. I loved this mechanic already and he didn't even put his hands on my car yet. Insert second brownie point! So originally, the diagnosis for my car was new brakes, all four sides. The total was going to run me around $400 bucks or so, paying in cash would get me no tax charged. But that totally changed, all thanks to Kevin's honesty. He texted me during the course of my day to let me know that my front brakes/rotors were fine, but my back brakes needed changing. My left rotor was good, only my right rotor was bad. My check engine light was on, which he said was because of a faulty gas cap which he'd swap out. My left tail-light bulb was also out, he'd fix that too. All for a whopping $268. Can you believe it?! And then get this, because there was no train, he also PICKED ME UP FROM WORK. -brownie points x1000- (do you get where I'm going with this? I sure hope so.) My car now feels awesome, and I was able to let go of my anxiety of letting just my Bronx mechanic take care of the work. I took about a stack worth of business cards because these guys so deserve the business. Kevin is as kind as they come and as honest as they can be - that's something that's EXTREMELY rare when dealing with mechanics and auto repair. Trust me, take it from the anxiety ridden chick who has separation anxiety from her Bronx based mechanic.. these guys are truly worth giving business to! read more

This is an update to my previous review. I want people to understand that I am posting this as word of caution. People are free to choose what services they want to pay for. This is my own experience (I have owned cars for close to 20 years and I have dealt with many mechanics). My check engine light came back on last week and my vehicle has been running rough. My fuel economy has been bad. I take it to my old mechanic shop that I started using again yesterday morning, 12/26/12. The shop calls me in the afternoon and tells me that it needs a tune up (new sparkplugs). I had that done at Harry's earlier this year. Kevin installed Bosch platinum sparkplugs +4 (the four pronged type, #4428). Well the diagnostic report this time was indicating a misfire. In any case, I gave the OK. I get to shop this morning and the mechanic asks me about the previous tune up. I go over timeline and then he shows me the plugs. Sure enough they are Bosch platinum sparkplugs +4 and they are dirty. The mechanic explained that in his experience those plugs don't work well in my particular American SUV engine. They are better used on European vehicles like an Audi. He went over other possible issues including replacing the ignition coils, but he explained that it wouldn't be economical until one fails. He told me to come right back if a problem develops. I paid and went on my way. The vehicle performed well. I get to my office and check the Bosch website. The 4428 Platinum+4 is compatible. In the past 3 weeks Harry's has seen much more of my car than I wanted but they got it right!!! My last place misdiagnosed a leaking head-gasket and a few other things they did just made things a mess. Well Harry's got it all right on my 93 Volvo 940 (I picked Harry's because I saw they did work on older Volvo's) the cost was more than fair and they did a lot of little stuff for free that they found on the way (Rats chewing a wire here and there!!!!!) They explain things to you show the parts that they replaced and don't do a huge part mark up as has happen to me at other places. This is a up standing place!! I normally don't write reviews, but these guys deserved some love. So I called Harry's early in the morning and asked how long it would take for a NYS inspection and they let me know 45 minutes. I had a meeting to attend to later in the morning so I hesitated and said I'd come by. I called back and let them know the next day would be better. They're attitude was easy going and didn't mind me calling a few times. I changed my mind though and decided to go that morning (not the next day) an hour or so later. I got there and the guy asked me right away if I had called about a Volvo and when I said yes, he grinned and said "well bring it in, lets get that thing inspected." I went to get a coffee and 30 minutes later they called letting me know the inspection looked great besides my brake pads. That was a bummer. I went back to the shop and tech there showed me exactly how much pad I had on my car (they needed replacing). He quoted me on the spot to fix the issue because he said if he fixed it, they wouldn't have to do a second inspection, just pass my car. I said go ahead so he started taking off the wheels. I went outside and called the Volvo dealer and my car actually had coverage for brakes so I ran back inside Harrys to stop the guys. The laughed and said "no problem" and put my wheels back on. They got the car down and backed it out. When I asked how much the [failed] inspection would cost, he said "dont worry about it" and smiled. They didn't charge me since I didn't pass!!! I was even an idiot and confusing as hell but they are really nice guys. He had even offered to personally drive to the warehouse to pick up the brake pads for my car to speed up the process. Overall, the guys there are really nice. I only had an inspection that was a fair inspection and the wheels removed and put back on. I can't speak to their other mechanical knowledge although they were stand up mechanics. I'll be going back in the future. read more

He's honest, proactively helpful, kind, has high attention to detail, cares about you and your car. I've been to him twice now and both times he was terrific. Here's a great example. Shop was closed by the time i was out of work. He and another guy came back to the shop to open it up so I could get my car. Really above and beyond. I went to Harry after my car stared leaking coolant. He replaced my radiator for $350, which was about $150 less than competitors had quoted me at. The mechanic explained everything that would be done before it was done. I was treated very kindly, and left feeling extremely satisfied with the work performed. Hi, I am new here. I'm an avid reader, first-time reviewer. I hope that I can live up to the high standards of Yelpers and also thank the Yelp community for being a valuable service and helping me find this place. What inspired me to sign up for Yelp when I could go on using the awesome services for free without ever writing a review myself? Plain and simple: Harry's Auto Repair. Here's my story: I was out grocery shopping. I had hit up Fairway and was on my way to The Brooklyn Kitchen. I parked nearby, got out of the car to get my goods, came back and...boom, my car wouldn't turn over. Just like that. The battery seemed good so I chalked it up to the starter having gone out. The problem BESIDES my car breaking down? It's after 6 p.m. on a Sunday. So I hopped on Yelp to find a well-reviewed tow truck as well as garage in the area. Harry's had good reviews so based upon that, I called them and they were still open! I asked if they had a recommended towing service, because I was nearby (within a quarter mile) and the tech said that he did but doubted they worked on Sundays. I thought I was doomed because I was reading other Yelpers' horror stories of tow truck companies charging outrageous "hook up" and "un-hooking" fees, and I just had a dreadful feeling they were also going to have a "Sunday" fee...but then my savior from Harry's Auto Repair said he was going to bring his truck and some chains and pull me to the shop because I was so close! He came within 5 minutes!! And he was STRONG...he pushed my heavy SUV into the shop himself once he unhooked it :-) The tech was professional and gave me his card and said that they would call in the morning with a quote for service before they began. True to his word I received a call in the morning for a quote for my starter. Only $325 for the "premium" vs. $290 for the standard...and for the small price difference I went for the premium. I thought for sure I was looking at a $400-$500 bill but they didn't charge for the "tow" or for labour (I guess that was built into the quote, which I thought was JUST for the starter). It was ready to be picked up the next day. Then, just to top everything off, they gave me a free diagnostic to let me know why my "check engine light" was always on. I had been advised before that I would need to replace my cadyllatic converter (spelling??) and was dreading this repair but Harry's guy told me I actually just needed to replace two sensors for it -- much cheaper for me! He also explained to me about an oil leak that would eventually need to be fixed. He kept in mind I was on a budget and told me what my priorities should be for when I could afford more repairs in the future instead of trying to milk me for making all the repairs at once, and didn't give me any pressure at all! For free! Oh and it is also worth mentioning that after I dropped the car off, I was walking to the subway I stopped off at this place called Grandma Rose's Pizza directly across the BQE/street because I had worked up an appetite. Man, that place deserves a Yelp of it's own too...but Harry's gets an extra star for having great comfort food nearby to soothe the hurt from my car breaking down unexpectedly. ALL AROUND WINNING!! I worked with Kevin. Thanks Kevin!! You rock!! So that's about it. The car's driving great now and started right up even better than the old starter had! Harry is a straight-shooter with an easy disposition. After reading prior reviews, I decided to take my mid-90's Volvo to nobody else (walking-distance location was another factor). He called me with an assessment in a few hours-- same-day his team did my light electrical job and performed an extra inspection on a timing belt that greatly put my mind at ease. All for a very reasonable fee. He gave me some personalized continued maintenance advice and did not scare/up-sell me on anything. My only issue, which is more applicable generally to all NYC auto shops -- the hours! I understand these guys have homes to get to, but when you also work 9-5, it's quite impossible to chance a whole day off to deliver and pick-up a car. Otherwise, I'll be back! read more

I liked Harry's overall; I've gone in once so far, and had similar experiences to the other positive reviews here. I needed my NYS safety inspection and insurance photo inspection done; my Check Engine light was on, so I knew I'd have to get that taken care of first. I called yesterday evening about it, and the guy who answered the phone (despite being closed) talked to me about what I needed done, and suggested I come in the next morning. Pretty quick response, even after hours. I took my car in this morning, asked again about the NYS inspection, and thinking I knew the answer, asked about the photo inspection too. Yes, the tech (Jamar?) said. "Really? You do photo inspections?" Yes, he repeated. Pros: He was nice, friendly, didn't mind having a conversation with me about my car issues, and spoke fluent English, all weak points of my previous garage. He said he'd give me a call with an estimate before he did anything to it, and he did, and quickly. He gave me options for repair, explaining the pros and cons, let me decide, and didn't pressure me. As far as I can tell today, the repair was done right. While I waited, he showed me the old part, and showed me what exactly was wrong. The price was reasonable, and he offered a free car wash next time I come in for service (apparently the car wash person was out today). Cons: He didn't actually do the NYS inspection, referring me to another shop down the street after I paid for the repair. Apparently their machine was down; I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it wasn't a few hours prior when he said they could do it. They also don't do photo inspections at all. There was some coolant or oil on one of the plastic pieces on the opposite side of the engine compartment, and when I pointed it out, he said he had no idea where it came from & suggested it was there when I brought it in, despite it being obviously fresh & me having taken a look under the hood at that specifically 2 weeks ago. They charge extra (at the tax rate) for credit cards, kind of a problem when you're talking about hundreds of dollars in repairs. The pros here outweigh the cons, which I can write off as honest mistakes. Not a 5 star experience, but not bad. I plan to go back for car work in the future, hopefully a long time from now! read more

These guys are great. I went to them with an old foreign expensive to repair car and they were honest, did not up sell me, and only fixed what needed to be fixed. There were some minor age issues that this car has had for years, and that many have tried to scare me into fixing, and these guys did not (although they thoroughly inspected the car and let me know everything they saw- and they were spot on), They also did a few minor clean ups without charging me, things to make the car run better- WTF!!??? I am sold- oh, and they did not repair anything without calling me first, showed me all the old parts, and fixed the car in one day. I cannot recommend these guys enough! read more

This is the second time I have gone to Harry's for maintenance on my car. Both times, I was able to drop off before work. They were very communicative about the work that needed to be done and transparent about costs (which were totally reasonable). They even fixed my door, which wasn't closing properly, at no cost, and it wasn't even the problem I brought my car in for. Wow. These guys are fantastic. I spoke with Shamaal and Kevin and both were courteous, extremely friendly, and knowledgeable in the service my vehicle needed. My GTI had a coolant leak and they took it right in, late on a Saturday. Monday morning they informed me it was likely the thermostat or water pump, both pretty costly repairs. As this is a company car, I needed approval before repairs could be made, at which point I discovered it was still under the factory warranty and would have to be taken to a dealership. Explaining the situation to Shamaal, he told me it would not be a problem, though there would be charges for the time spent attempting to diagnose the issue, as well as refilling my low oil (even knowing this car can only take synthetic, a requirement even the dealerships have not always been aware of...), all of which was understandable. Picking the car up today, they only charged me for the oil! I was explained what work was done, the third party warranties that are honored, and thanked for visiting. While I do not look forward to future car trouble, it is reassuring to know Harry's exists. I will most definitely be back. read more

These guys are awesome. I was planning a road trip for the coming week and knew I needed an oil change so I decided to stop by being that they're near my work. Oil change price is $35 for regular (good price) and $75 for synthetic. People around them charge way more because they think they can My car was seen within 10 minutes of pulling up. I asked them to check my coolant levels, they said of course, they always check everything (again, most places in NY don't have time for this). They filled my tires with air, topped off my coolant, removed leaves from that trap under the hood and I got fresh oil to go. Easy and pleasant experience. Update for 2016 Went for my yearly car inspection and the car failed inspection. It failed because of the brakes. The calipers and pads needed to be replaced. The fellow working there Moe went above and beyond to explain to me how the brakes work and why they have to be replaced. He replaced them in an hour or so and when I went to look up what a fair price was to replace the brakes on the Internet, he was spot on. Highly (HIGHLY) recommend going here if you need a good and honest mechanic! :-) read more

My car was making a loud noise. I didn't want to pay a lot of money, but I have to make a 400+ mile trip next month and I didn't want to break down in the middle of it. Based on Yelp reviews, I chose Harry's. I was very, very satisfied. They answered their phone everytime I called and they spoke plainly and slowly and made sure I understood what was going on. It turns out I needed a new muffler. In addition, the mechanic checked everything else out in my car at no extra cost. He noted that my front brake pads were low, but said I could probably wait until after my trip to fix them. I really appreciated their honesty and their straightforward business dealing. I recently purchased a used car with a fair amount of miles on it. When I needed to get it inspected, I originally took it to "2 guys autoplex" on McGuinness without realizing that it is the worst shop in Brooklyn. "2 guys autoplex" called me an hour after I dropped my car off and told me that the car had some "issues." After quoting me $700 of repairs, I took the time to look through their Yelp reviews and realized that their rating is falsely inflated by obviously fake 5 star reviews. Everyone who has actually been to this place rates it 1 star unanimously. I told them not to touch my car and I went to pick it up. They charged me a $37 inspection fee and failed my car. My car was also left parked unattended on the sidewalk with the windows down when I arrived. I searched around yelp and found that Harry's Auto had an authentic high rating from actual users. A recommendation from a friend in real life cinched the deal and I took my car there. At Harry's, my car passed inspection within ten minutes without any hassle or upselling of unnecessary work. The mechanics seemed to know all about the nefarious business practices of "2 guys autoplex", and laughed when I said I had just come from there.
