How does this guy still have a medical license? In the 90s/ early 2000s he ruined the lives of so many people including myself by prescribing adderall and at high limits. He came up in conversation today, which has happened many times over the years and it's always about how he constantly upped our doses as children to an excessive level. I have spoken with countless people over the years who had the exact same experience and some people, including myself, started using hard drugs by hooking kids on adderall at such high doses. I've met many of them in AA who went through the same thing with him and started using cocaine and meth due to him. I could go on and on. And every time he comes up, it's always the exact same story and the disbelief that he still has his license . I don't normally write yelp reviews but after meeting another person today who he got hooked on high doses of adderall as a kid and later experienced addiction as a result. I'm not exaggerating when I say tons of parents and kids had the exact same experience with him countless times over the years. read more

Forever.... that what it feels: as though he has known me forever... ( & and it's too bad I couldn't have had him as my Dr earlier in my life, but my parents came from a . 'different situation, ' and did the best they could) I trust Dr verby with my 9 yr old twins who have adhd/add/ptsd, and myself, with my own disorders, because as a single mother of twins (both With AD HD, and, everything that comes along with it- i.e. allergies, educational barricades, anxiety, immune compromising problems, etc... ) Dr. Verby has been there for us. He is keenly insightful with children, especially. Dr Verby is awfully patient, to the point you know he cares and knows ones' individual situation. Without him, my kids wouldn't be as great as they are. (I had begun treatment with him after moving back to SF from NY, @ Columbia University , and back to UCLA Dr's... and..back to him) .... then was lucky enough to have him be there for my kiddos for the last 7 years. They both have adhd. Office experience note: I suggest you don't try to play his piano unless you actually know how to play [in the waiting room]. read more

I started with Dr. Verby when he had his initial office on El Camino shortly after he opened there. I had learned of him around 2001 while attending Kitty Petty's meetings at the Friends (Quakers) Meeting house in Palo Alto. And made an appointment. Only to quickly discover I wouldn't be able to afford to continue. He doesn't take insurance. I talked to a staff member explaining my situation and was told to come in anyway. Dr. Verby didn't want to lose me as a patient and would see me practically pro-bono. He's always believed in me and has seen me through some difficult and trying times. I was hoping his health issues might spare him a few more years. Elia explained on the phone simply "it's time". Alas, the end of an era. So many pleasant memories of all those supportive and uplifting visits with him over the years. I told him the Rx I really needed was for him to bottle that "Verby XR" thing for me. He came to be such a good and loyal friend. And I dare say my best friend. Happy trails compadre, you will be dearly missed by all of your grateful patients. read more

So much good to say here. My primary care provider lacked the resources to care for my needs and that is how I came accross Dr. Verby. He was able to schedule me for a screning almost immediatly. He has a "straight to the point" style and is always sharp as a tac during our sessions with helpful information and advice. The whole office have been very accommodating to my own needs rather than just trying to squeeze out every dollar. Honestly one of the best decisions of my life was taking a chance with Dr. Verby. 5 stars all the way. read more

Dr Verby understands the intricacies of functioning with Attention Deficit Disorder in the professional world. There are those of us who get up every day, go to work behind this eight ball, and struggle to get the job done. A simple series of numbers appear in our minds like a Jackson Pollock painting. We change subject in mid conversation constantly much to the frustration of our friends. This is the tip of the iceberg our families and loved ones deal with daily. ADD is real, and there are ways to treat it. Thanks Doc for helping me all these years. BillMac read more

Dr Verby and his office are just fantastic! They listen and help tremendously. What great service. I highly recommend this office.

Dr. Verby is a wonderful Doctor who has helped me for the past 15 plus years. He was there when I was diagnosed with cancer and later when I became a widow and all the times in between. I could not have had anyone who was as wonderful. He's a treasure as is his office manager Elia. I owe so much to them. They have always been there for me. Life is difficult and painful but there is help with Dr. Verby and Elia. They care about you. And I will be forever grateful to them. Fondly, Sandy read more

Be careful, know what meds he's giving you or your children. He over medicates you. He prescribed a high dosage of a Benzo medication that is highly addictive and hard to get off of it. Our new Drs. Could not believe he prescribed that when there are other meds he could if given. I am not against having an older Dr. because I always felt they had more experience but this one needs to retire now. read more

My family has been seeing Dr. Verby for over 20 years now. He has always, always been there in our time of need and it is because of him and his staff, that we have a normal household and individually have normal lives. We originally went to Dr. Verby because we were referred to him by two separate, unconnected professionals and because he was the recipient of a "Dr.'s Dr." award where doctors in the area vote for who they most recommend for their given practice. He was featured in a magazine for that. But, all the accolades aside, he cares and he helped our family completely change its downward trajectory into an upward one. read more

This ADD Specialist is the best I have found in the Bay Area. I have seen many medical doctors and psychiatrists over many years with very limited success to address my unique needs. I am so glad I found Dr. Verby who is a behavior specialist with extensive knowledge of the care of patients with ADD. The initial cost is expensive, and am not at all disappointed with the results for the price paid. The staff in the office are friendly and helpful so that patients can get reimbursed by their medical coverage with the paperwork needed to be submitted. This is a medical professional who has years of practice and knowledge about ADD and from my personal experience, I can recommend him without reservation. read more

Doctor Verby has treated me as an adult so my perspective is based on years of practicing coping skills. However, in some cases, like mine, that is just not enough and medical treatment, (medication), is needed to fully meet my potential working in an intellectual office environment... I can understand the global anger many feel from the challenges of ADHD but blaming the doctor is inappropriate. While some medications may impact the development of brain function in children I am not a doctor and was never treated as a child so I could not speak to how this possible impact a young brain one way or the other. As a young child I was not treated with medication and instead was misunderstood and put is special classes riding the small bus to school... So parents that need to stay in big cities and public schools rather than private areas/schools with accommodations to mitigate for ADHD are better off taking medical advice. Did you know that there are many types of ADHD symptoms? Are you a visual learner or auditory? Both? In 2019 most good schools can help create learning environments that work. Accommodations can include reduced lighting, quite areas to avoid distractions and longer test times. Hyper intelligent people some times need help with matching socks but know when they need help. Doctor Verby has courage and experience to help. read more

Waiting 40-50 minutes for 3-5 minute appointments, and being charged $190.00 was a standard experience. Failure to listen to patient's description of their response to medication, general well-being, and his inability to provide effective care were the primary reasons I dropped Verby. Further the office staff was frequently rude and disorganized making it very difficult to secure appointments and prescription refills as needed. read more

I met Dr. Verby about 5 years ago to be treated for my ADHD. At the time I was in between jobs and didn't have insurance. I left Kaiser and was looking for help which led me to Dr. Verby. He helped me out in providing me different options to pay for my check ups and prescription and we inevitably became friends. He and his staff are very helpful and accommodating. I would say check out the office and find out for yourself! read more

Is this doctor for the rich only? $700 for the initial consult , pay $350 immediately when you make the appointment. Says his receptionist: "But Dr. Verby is a very important person in the field, he gives talks all around the nation, he's done a lot of things, he's very big," etc. I don't care how good he is if he wants this much money. It's prohibitively expensive medical care, especially if you don't have good insurance or an income that can absorb these costs comfortably. Talk to other psychiatrists and they will say it's appalling how much he charges patients (before quickly making sure it's off the record). --But if you have the money, of course, use him. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Verby in high school and had pretty good results with him, however his office staff is deplorable and far from polite. I contacted his office on 9-2 to request copies of my charts and files. The office staff informed me that it would be $0.17 a page. They told me they had my file in storage and would call me when they get it. Three weeks have now gone by and no one has contacted me regarding my file. I managed to call today and they told me it would be $35 in "clerical fees" and $0.17 for each page. It's unreal and illegal. The state of CA requires that you only have to pay the fee for actual copying and NOT a clerical fee. Looks like I need to go to the state of CA and file a complaint. read more

I'm. giving 5 stars only because yelp doesn't go up to 10. In my opinion Dr Verby is not just a great doctor, he is a genius and a lifesaver. I went to see him a few years ago for the first time and I was a mess. Dr Verby assured me that he felt certain I would feel better in 6-8 weeks. He was wrong because I felt great and my depression and lethargy went away in one month. . After dozens of doctors and false diagnosis I finally got the prescriptions that went to the heart of my condition. I have ADHD and Bipolar disorder and I thank Dr Verby and his wonderful staff for giving me a life. Unlike a few past Presidentts when Dr Verby says he feels my pain, he truly means it. Mental illness is not a life sentence and Dr Verby set m me free and I highly recomend him to those who suffer in silence. Andrew F read more

This man is performing harmful medicine that has been allowed for over 20 years. I was personally Dr. Verby's patient for many years starting at age 8. This man is nothing more than a paid-by-Pharma-quack and addicted to the very medications he prescribes. He's made a business of hooking young, hyper intelligent and social spectrum children (including his own) to further his business and career. My mother was given "free" medication samples without any over the counter prescriptions. Over a decade, he would "diagnose" me with all sorts of "disorders" with no evidence other than a teenagers reaction to medication. These "prescriptions" would change every visit to his office and my mother would be sent home with a new plastic grocery a bag full of his "free samples". One more pill to mask the symptoms of the last. I was in a drug induced haze for almost my entire my childhood because of this mans heinous actions and the dubious efficacy of pharmaceutical drugs on so called ADD/ADHD. To this day there is no medical basis, test or scan that proves conclusively that someone, adult or child, has ADD/ ADHD. The intake questionnaire his office used included questions like, "Do you find you have trouble doing long boring tasks for hours on end?". By the end 90% of people who take these tests believe they have ADD. ADD/ ADHD is not a real disorder and the new classification in the DSM-5 is based on science provided by drug companies and other vested interest groups that have lobbied to have psychiatrists like Dr. Verby sell these drugs for profit. Others are seeking damages in other states. https://thomasjhenrylaw.com/personal-injury-attorney/dangerous-drugs-and-devices/adhd/ https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/big-pharma-s-manufactured-epidemic-the-misdiagnosis-of-adhd/ If you are a current patient, get copies of all records of everything they prescribe immediately (included his chicken scratch, cryptic prescription notes). It should also be illegal for them to charge for copies of your medical records, which they insist on and rarely follow up with, as you can read from other reviews. If I had copies, I would have enough for a malpractice suit. Adults who survived being forcibly medicated on these drugs by pharmaceutical psychiatrists will suffer from medical complications for the rest of their adult lives. Please don't do the same to your children. read more

Everything JC from San Francisco said in his review is absolutely true. My son started on Adderall which was something his friends mother found for her son. He was 16 and continued on for years without my even knowing. I would go with him as a teenager and Dr. Verby always looked and spoke like he was on some kind of downers. he would ask unconventional questions that had nothing to do with anything, just to pretend he was giving some kind of evaluation before handing out the meds. He even mentioned that he got his own son addicted, one time when I was there. After my son started becoming psychotic I went with him to see doctor Verby and he was telling us about the patient Who was sitting in his wait room and what her problem was. no other doctor would ever talk about their patients problems to someone else. I've always had nothing but disgust for this man and I finally got him to quit treating my son when my son became suicidal. If I could I'd sue the hell out of him!!!! read more

Our son has been seeing Doctor Verby for almost a year now for combination of ADD, OCD and Anxiety related issues. The positive results were noticeable after the first few weeks with steady improvements throughout. Doctor Verby's depth of knowledge, extraordinary ability to connect with kids and gaining their trust, exceptional patience, constant follow up to monitor the behavior changes and medication effects and overall focused attention is amazing. We feel incredibly lucky that to have him involved in caring for our son and highly recommend him to others. read more

Dr. Verby is not only polite, compassionate, and humorous. He shows genuine, deep, insightful, and optimistic thoughts in assessing your needs. In his treatment options discussion, he uses not only what has worked based on his clinician experience, but also clearly monitors the latest evidence published, and has a very patient-preferences centered approach that places more weight on your experience of what has worked well for you before than I have seen most other psychiatrists do. Clearly he pays deep attention to the written medical history you give him the first time you see him but is also a very quick study on it and quickly integrates it into your treatment plan. The best I've seen! read more

Dr. VERBY is not a Board Certified Psychiatrist so beware! He claims to be an expert yet has not completed his Board Certified in Psychiatry. I was not impressed by his services and do not recommend him. I would suggest a more appropriately trained Psychiatrist, and he is not one. Check his credentials with The American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology--there are none!! read more

I too was a "patient" of Dr. Verby as child though I felt like more of a lab rat for him and his friends who were pharmaceutical scientists that created medications specifically for this industry, his words not mine. He also verbally admitted that the free samples that we were given were not FDA approved. He was a jazz musician who partied alot. My family would come in for an already expensive appointment and would have to watch him sleep through our sessions because he had a long night out. He changed medications and made additions every visit for reasons unknown. By the time my family decided to seek services elsewhere I was on 14 different medications spread throughout the day. I ended up getting 3 different medical opinions from psychiatrists who were a lot more seasoned in this industry. Every medical opinion I received ended up telling me that I was misdiagnosised. Maybe he's changed, I could only hope that he has but the years that I have had to endure because of his mistakes can not be replaced. read more

Great Doctor. It understands your needs and has great passion for his profession. I would recommend 100%.

$750 for an initial one hour visit, then $125/hour for subsequent, 20 minute "medication management" visits. Dr. Verby provides 24/7 on-call coverage. That, in and of itself, justifies what he charges. I have found that the doctors that do not take insurance do tend to charge more, but provide very comprehensive services. He provides us with samples when we need to try a new medication and will also provide samples, if we are unable to get medication from our local pharmacy in a timely manner, which has happened more than once. It is very reassuring to know that we have access to phone consultation. When your child is out of control, a trip to a clinic or a wait in an ER or worse, a call to the police, is not what you want. After years of humming and hawing by most medical professionals we encountered, it was wonderful to encounter Dr. Verby. He has helped us immensely. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Verby for 2+ months. On the first visit, after reviewing the self-evaluation, the results of the machine-based diagnostic test, and a thorough and thoughtful conversation, Dr. Verby set me on a gradual and measured treatment plan. Shortly thereafter, I noticed a remarkable improvement in several critical aspects of my day-to-day life. This improvement has not only been obvious to me but also by others as well. Just as important, during our time together I find Dr. Verby to be extremely observant and knowledgeable, with exceptional listening skills and a good sense of humor. I highly recommend Dr. Verby, and just wish I had engaged his services much earlier in life! read more

This review was written 7/22/09: Again, I feel compelled to recommend Dr. Harry Verby. This man is a professional who demands as much from his staff as he does himself, who treats his patients with respect and kindness, who actively listens to us. Despite my myopic perspective at times, he has helped me by encouraging and supporting me. His grasp of the proper medication to prescribe is truly remarkable. And lastly, had Dr. Verby not offered me a break on the cost of his services, I would not have been seen by him and consequently, helped by him. I am eternally grateful to Dr. Verby for his generosity of pocketbook and spirit. read more

I urge you not to seek treatment from Dr. Virby. He does not care about you honestly. I had him recommended to me by my doctor after the psychiatrist I was seeing failed to check up on me after missing an appointment, which I consider a red flag in a field that deals with the mentally ill. I called to schedule my appointment after my doctor verified that she had called Dr. Verby's office and that he was accepting new patients. The receptionist told me he was not interested in treating me because my doctor had told him that I was under the impression Dr. Verby would prescribe me adderall. This is not true I did not ask for adderall from Dr. Verby; I asked my doctor for a good psychiatrist that is all that I did. She referred me to Dr. Verby. If adderall is a touchy subject to doctors then I see no reason why I can't be treated without it. There are so many other medications. But I was flat-out rejected over something I did not actually say, and the receptionist had no interest in listening to me. I am not some pill-popping kid, I am an undiagnosed bipolar patient who has been running around trying to get proper treatment because my parents do not help me find doctors and such. Absolutely ridiculous in my eyes. I am waiting for a reply from Dr. Verby himself I will update this review once he has explained himself. For the time being I DO NOT RECOMMEND anyone sees this doctor. Particularly children. read more

I paid $900 for my initial evaluation and $175/15 minutes for subsequent visits. My initial evaluation consisted of nothing more than placing my child in a room with a machine and no directions. That was it!!! That is not an evaluation that is worth the $900. Please do not use this doctor. If you truly want your child to get the appropriate evaluation and therapy, go elsewhere. I realized that my son's best interests were not the priority. I assumed that behavioral therapy was part of the cost but it is not even offered at this clinic. My son was prescribed meds that were way too strong for him considering his height and weight. read more

Dr Verby is a pioneer in the field of ADHD. He is willing to work with people and find the best combination of drugs that work. Other doctors seem to want to prescribe what is "normal" but Dr Verby thinks outside of the box. He's not for everyone. He's very mellow and really understands ADHD because he has it himself. If you haven't had much success with other doctors bit the bullet and meet with him. My son has seen him for many years and is now in college. read more

Dr. Verby was/is a Godsend to us. Consult and diagnosis was very thorough and exact. He doesn't jack around with insurance companies, so therefore what you get from him as far as medical recommendations isn't limited by what the insurance co tells him is allowed or not. We found success and stability on our 2nd drug trial-- no languishing for months/years as we "try a little of this, maybe a little of that...." that I see with others who have mental issues. He treats us with respect and compassion and he has a magnificent brain with many years of experience in the area of behavioral medicine. Complaints of high price? Well maybe that helps weed out people who are just needy or are really in need of parenting classes.....because if your serious about getting help and your tired of being put off, hearing that your child is just spoiled, but you know something is wrong when your 7 year old is screaming for you to kill her because she just wants to die, then you will pay whatever it takes for the best. If you want less than the best, go somewhere else and 'maybe' you'll get the help you need for less. But you also just might get what you pay for. read more
