Tom is the best -- and the most honest! -- jeweler around. Plus, it is also amusing to see a guy…read morewho used to be an NFL lineman playing with tiny, very valuable rocks. He sells all kinds, but diamonds are always the big thing everyone sells so I'll concentrate on that. 1. Tom will not sell you a diamond until he is sure you understand what you're buying: cut, clarity, carat, and color. I did not know any of that when the women (ALL of them!) in my office insisted that I go to see Tom before I bought an engagement ring from anyone else, so I got a whole hour of very useful instruction. This also happens to be a very good way to learn how many high-end jewelers are ripping you off. 2. Pro tip (from Tom): never buy a diamond already in a setting. The setting makes it look twice as bit, which is the reason most retail stores will always show you ring already in a setting. 3. Tom not only allows you, but insists that you look at what you're thinking of buying under a microscope. Every diamond has flaws, and he will show you exactly what they are. 4. Tom will show you exactly how much he paid for the stone you are considering buying, and he'll show you what his mark-up is. It was really a great experience buying from Tom, and the wife got a very nice diamond for a reasonable cost (up to you whether to reveal that, but mine was glad I hadn't been silly with our money). Pro tip #2 (also from Tom) is to take Tom's valuation to your insurance agent when you get insurance for the jewelry.

Tom showed me the flaws in every diamond under microscope. The clouds and imperfections could easily be seen. It kept my dad from making a bad investment. I never forgot that.
